Can you tell me what you know about Catherine's mother? I am assuming that the marriage record for this couple is the one between "Jerry Clapp" and "Ellen Woodward" on 1 Oct 1868 in Brown County, Illinois. Someone has also told me that her name was Martha Ellen Clark, previously married to a Woodward.
Do you know that to be true? Can you tell me where you found that proof? I believe she belongs to the family I am researching - a daughter, Martha Ellen Clark was married to James M. Woodard 23 Sep 1858 in Pike County. The couple was in Texas when they signed some papers (as Woodward). I have not been able to find them in the 1860 census or since.
I am wondering if he died and she returned to Illinois -she had a brother and a sister living in Brown County, and another sister in Kansas. Can anyone help me prove whether or not she married Jeremiah Clapp? If so, I have much information on her family. Thanks.

Hi, Helen. So good to hear from you. Please tell me what you know about the Grants!! John Charles Grant was my great grandfather. He was born 12/1/1849 in East Coulston, Wiltshire, England. He immigrated to Canada with his father, mother and sister as you said. The story he told was they were going down the St. Lawrence River in Canada on a ship in April, 1865 when they heard that the Civil War in the U.S. had ended. So that gives us a pretty good idea of when they arrived in Canada. I have not been able to find any exact data on ship's name or date of arrival yet. They first settled around Fergus, Ontario where the sister married in 1868 as you said. I do not know exactly when James, Elizabeth Emma, and John Charles left Canada to settle in the U.S. They are not on the 1870 census but there is a land record on 9/21/1871 where Elizabeth Emma Grant bought some land near Licking, Texas County, Missouri. James was a farmer and also owned a small tree nursery that sold!
apples and strawberries. He died on 3/16/1888, and his wife Elizabeth Emma Grant died 1/3/1892 in Coulstone, Dent County, Missouri. They were buried on their farm but no one knows the exact spot anymore.(This farm was near Licking, Texas County, Missouri) Their son, John Charles Grant married Elizabeth Rathbone Dixon on 8/3/1873 at her family home/farm near Licking, Texas County, Missouri. His wife had been born in Liverpool, England on 1/9/1857 and immigrated to the U.S. as a child also. They had 14 children. Elizabeth Rathbone Dixon Grant died 1/2/1927. John Charles Grant remarried on 4/10/1928 in Licking, MO to Nancy Lucinda Crow. He died 1/1/1943 in Licking, MO and is buried alongside his first wife at the Licking Cemetery, Licking, Texas County, Missouri.
If you want more information please email me at waegelin(a)comcast.net I'd love to hear from you and find out what you know of the Grants and how you are related to them.

Hi Betsy: James Grant and Elizabeth Emma Clapp are my 2nd great grandparents. I understand that they immigrated to Canada around 1865 with their 2 children Elizabeth Emma Mary and John Charles. Elizabeth Emma Mary Grant married Joseph Richard Hatt in Fergus, Wellington County, Ontario on May 30 1868.
I do not have any information regarding their immigration to Canada and I did not know that John Charles and his parents emigrated again to Misouri. Could you tell me a bit about where they lived, where they are buried and about the marriage of John Charles Grant.
I would be happy to give you what information I have.
Thank you
Helen
