On Ancestry I found that Joel died Jan. 2, 1854 in Texas and had two children listed, Martha Jane L. and Lewis R.
No Elizabeth Jane.
However, most of the family trees for William Clapp lists an Elizabeth Jane as a daughter.
I found Joel Clapp and wife Milinda in Limestone, Texas in the 1850 Census. They had four children listed living with them. Martha L., age 22 born in Ala.; Francis M., age 14 born in Tenn.; Cladonia age 13, born in Texas; and Texana age 10, born in Texas. Also living in the county were Lewis Clapp and John Clapp. I believe these are both sons of Joel as they were both born in Alabama.
I could not find Joel or Milinda Clapp listed in the 1860 Census of Texas. It looks as if they both died before 1860 unless Milinda remarried or moved out of the state before the 1860 Census.
Based on where the children were born it appears Joel left Alabama early in 1830's, was in Tennessee in 1836 and arrived in Texas in 1837. That doesn't leave any time to go to Ky. or Indiana.

Dear Joe, Thanks so much for your help. I have been going on the assumption that Eliza Jane was born in 1822. I don't think that there are even two census's that ever match up where her age is the same. Where I got 1822 is in the 1850 Hickman Co. KY census, she is 28 and so is her husband, William Foster. In the 1860 Missouri census, she was listed as 31, in 1870, she was 30 and 53 in 1880!Your guess is as good as mine! In the marriage book when she married James M. Humphreys, she is listed as a widow, being born in Jackson Co., Alabama. The information that I have on Joel Clapp is this:
Born in 1800-1801 in Madison Co., Alabama
His parents: Lewis Ludwig Clapp and Margaret Ann Loy
Marriage: Malinda Williamson November 6, 1821 in MadisonCounty, Alabama
Joel came to Houston Co. Texas in 1836. He served with the Texas Rangers for the Republic of Texas.
The family story is that Eliza Jane came to Texas from Illinois for the purpose of meeting up with her father. She and her family came to Texas around 1872. My mother said that she was unsuccessful in finding her father. Where she and her husband James Humphreys finally settled, was in Walker County, Texas and it was very , very near Clapp Cemetery.
I will keep looking! If I didn't enjoy genealogy research, I would not keep doing it!
I wonder who she went to Kentucky with? Lewis Ludwig Clapp died in Calloway Co. KY when she was living in Hickman Co. At one time I thought that perhaps she was the youngest child of Ludwig.
I do appreciate any and all ideas that you may have.

You said Elizabeth Jane was born abt 1828 in Jackson Co., Alabama. I checked the 1830 Census for Alabama and found only one Clapp listed for the entire state. He was Wm. Clapp and was 30 to 40 yrs old. Ludwig Clapp also had a son named William born abt 1792. So this might be the father of your Elizabeth. The census indicated they had a one daughter
between 0-5 yrs old, as well as 4 other daughters and four sons. I had in my data file that William died before 1842 and had married a Mary Cotton on Dec. 9, 1813 and had 7 children. This info came from "Albright, Clapp, Burk Families" by Joseph H. Vance on page 254.
I did not find a Joel Clapp in alabama in either the 1830 or 1840 Censuses. Nor did I find a William Clapp in the 1840 Census of Alabama or Kentucky of the correct age.

Dear Joe, Thanks for your help and suggestion. I think that Elizabeth probably was the first child of Joel Clapp. I just can't prove it!!Do you have any information indicating when Joel left Alabama for Kentucky?

The two books I have do not list the children of Joel Clapp ( b 1800 ). The journies of your Elizabeth matches what is told in the book by Joseph Vance about Ludwig Clapp.(grandfather).
While the age of Elizabeth(born 1825-1828) fits being a daughter of Joel Clapp, no children are listed in either book.
You should check marriages in Alabama for her marriage. Back then many marraiges had bonds established that often name the father of the bride.

Dear Joe,
I am not sure what Liza Jane's true birthday is. Her marriage record to William Foster in 1842 did not give her age. In the 1850 Kentucky Census, she was 28, making her born in 1822 , in Jackson County, Alabama. In 1853, the Kentucky marriage license to James Humphreys, lists her age as also 28, msking her being born in 1825.
I truly appreciate your help. I just found your reply to me. I look forward to hearing from you.

Willie Clapp was born in (Westfield ???)Massachusetts about 1859 and died at the age of 26 of typhoid fever. He is listed in the 1880 federal census for Hampden county Massachusetts, page 25.
Thanks, the photo was worth the effort to tie one of my little know relatives to the family tree

There was a listing for a Effie Clapp married to John H. Ellis.
No reference to a Phoeba Clapp married to a McBride.
Looked in "German Clapps' by Elmo Clapp and in "Albright, Clapp, and Burke" families by Vance.
