The following is a brief description of information from the book "Who's Who in the Doctrine & Covenants" by Susan Easton Black, published 1997 by Deseret Book pgs. 82-84.
"Amos Davies D&C 124:11-14
Birth: 20 September 1813, Hopkinton, Rockinham County New Hampshire.
Death: 22 March 1872, Big Mound, Hancock County, Illinois
"Amos Davis Was the postmaster, a merchant, and a landowner in Commerce (Nauvoo) when the Latter-day Saints located in the area. He welcomed the new Mormon settlers and employed several in his business ventures..."
"Amos was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in April 1840."
"Difficulties arose between the Prophet and Amos Davies in 1842." The book goes on to tell a bit about several court appearances.
"He remained in Nauvoo... When the Saints left the area in 1846..."
"In 1850 he journeyed to California with others lured by the Gold Rush. By 1853 he had returned to the Midwest and was residing in Michigan, and by 1858 he was again living in Illinois. Amos died on 22 March 1872 in Illinois."
"Notes
1. His name on all preserved historical records appears as Amos Davis."
He is the Amos Davis who was living in Nauvoo when the 1840 census was taken. I still strongly believe the Amos Davis we are interested and the one who raised Lyman Simpson and Mary Ann Clapps daughter Mary Ann Simpson was living in was in Stephenson County, Illinois when the 1840 census was taken. We do not know if Lyman Simpson ever lived in Stephenson County. I don't know if we will ever know where he lived except that he is enumerated in DuPage County in the 1840 census.

I was sent in error a death cert. of Charles Clapp, son of Thomas Clapp and Mary (Clapp Memorial has her listed as Mary Wales). This Charles was born in 1772/1773 and married when he was about 74 yrs old to Mrs. Mary P. Richards. If anyone wants this certificate before I send it back, let me know and I can mail it to you.
Sincerely,
Sandy
