I am sorry I didn't realize until just now that you had
replied to my post. I would greatly appreciate a look up on
David Clapp who married Catherine Ryerson in Darke Co. Ohio.
and later lived in Whitley, Indiana. I would really like to
confirm if in fact they are the parents of Sarah Ann Clapp
born in Darke County Ohio. Sarah Ann married Daniel W. Jewell. Sarah may have been married to someone by the surname of Craig,Creigh or something similiar before she
married. Daniel W. Jewell. Sarah & Daniel are my great, great grandparents. I would truly, truly appreciate
any info you can give me. I am not where I can supply DOB
for Sarah Ann but can send it later if needed. If you would
like you may email me directly at hatelstadcurly(a)yahoo.com.
Thanks again for your offer. Jo Ann Hatlestad

I am trying to confirm that Joel Clapp had a daughter named Liza Jane Clapp. (Or Elizabeth Jane Clapp). She would have had to have been his first child. In her census records, she always said that she was born in Alabama. Her first marriage record said that she was born in Jackson County, Alabama. I know that the boundaries of Jackson, and Marshall and Madison counties all changed from time to time. She was in the same location in Kentucky when Ludwig Clapp died there. She married first, William Foster and lived in Hickman County, Kentucky. She married second, James M. Humphreys in Murray, Kentucky. They then moved to Missouri, then Tunnel Hill TWP, Illinois. They then moved around 1872 to Trinity County, Texas. I believe that they moved there because family was there. Joel Clapp had died there. There is a Clapp Cemetery that is near the boundary line where the three counties come together: Trinity, Houston, and Walker.
Would you please look up in the German Clapps book to see if my Liza Jane Clapp is there. I am very greatful for your time and interest.
Sincerely, Mary Beth Woodall

Amos Davis and Mary Jane Scott were the adoptive or foster partent of may Ann Simpson and here are their records. Amos Davis Jr. was born 23 May 1811 In Bellefonte, Center Pa. He died 8 Oct 1878 in Joseph, Sevier, Utah and that is where he is buried. His parents were Amos Davis Sr. and Mary John. He married Mary Jan Scott born 10 Mar 1822 at Zanesville, Muskingum, Ohio they were married between 1836 and 1840 at Nauvoo, Hancock, Ill. She died 1852 Huntington, Emery, Utah and is buried at Desert Lake, Emery, Utah her parents were William Scott, and Sarah Fletcher. There were two Amos Davis in the Nauvoo area and both of them are listed as one in the website http://earlylds.com. The Amos Davis listed in Nauvoo in 1840 is the one who had a store and is mentioned in D&C 124:111. He is not the man who raised Mary Ann Simpson. The man mentioned above had a store in Nauvoo. There is a book about the individuals who are mentioned in the D&C. I believe it is by Susan Easton Black. It is now out of print and I don't have a copy of it. The Amos Davis above left the Church and died back east. I believe I know someone who has a copy of the book. I will try and get the information it gives.
I found the following information in the Joseph Ward Records FHL US/CAN Film 26045 Items 1-2
Amos Davis Date of first baptism Jul 1840 by E. Groves
Mary J. S. Davis 1st Bap. Aug 1840 by E. Groves
The following is form the Times and Seasons and I believe does show that Amos Davis and wife May Jane were in Stephenson County and the man who baptized them was in Stephenson County. The information is copied and pasted.
Vol. 1. No. 12. Nauvoo, Illinois, October, 1840 Whole No. 12. Times and Seasons, Vol.1, p.181
Elder Elisha H. Groves writes as follows:
Times and Seasons, Vol.1, p.181-182
I left home May 12th, in company with brother Isaac Cleveland, traveled commerce, from thence to Savena by water, landed the 21st, preached the same evening; from thence to Napoleon, held several meetings: we also preached several times in Eli abethtown, and in a place called the Townson settlement, on the head of Rush creek; from here we traveled to Big Grove, where we unexpectedly met with brother Ezra Strong; himself and family have been much afflicted; from thence we traveled to Waines Grove, held several meetings, from thence into the settlements of the Pecatolika river. June 20th, brother Cleveland left me for the east: I traveled up and down this river preaching whenever I could get an opportunity.
I have baptized 12 and organized a church of 20 members: br. Strong is appointed to preside over them. In all the above places there are believers, and great calls for preaching, also on Rock river. but the situation of my family will not permit me to stay. This branch of the church is 40 miles east of Galena in Stephenson co. Ill. -- This is an excellent country the soil is equal to that of Missouri, the land is not yet in market. There is plenty of heavy timber on the Pecatolika river, and good mill privileges; there is a saw and flouring mill within 5 miles of this branch.
Times and Seasons, Vol.1, p.182
Yours &c.
E. H. GROVES.
Rockford, Aug. 2nd, 1841.
BROTHERS SMITH & THOMPSON:
With pleasure I improve this opportunity to communicate to you something in relation to my journey and labours since I left Nauvoo, for Galena, where we arrived on Thursday night of the 15th. The next day in company with brother Shumway, I arrived at Vienna, where Elder E. H Groves built up a small branch of the church last year, of which brother S. was a member. I held a meeting on the Sabbath following, and on Monday; on which day a Mr. Howe, a preacher of the Campbellite order attended meeting, who had previously set an appointment for the next Sabbath. After I had addressed the congregation upon the prophecies in relation to Israel, in their present scattered state, and reasoned from the scripture that we must of necessity receive revelation, from the fact that the prophets had testified that when the Lord should stretch out his hand to gather Israel, not from the single nation of Egypt, but from all other nations whither he had scattered them in a dark and cloudy d!
ay, and bring them down into the wilderness of the people all this without revelation, nay but says the Lord by the prophet, "I will plead with you face to face like as I plead with your fathers in the wilderness of Egypt, and cause you pass under the rod, and bring you into the bond of the covenants" after this I adverted to the testimony of Jeremiah, that in the transcendent glory of Israel's restoration, the wonders of the sea, and of Sinai's firm basis shaking at presence of its God, and the awe stricken multitude gazing with wonder on the stupendous scene, should all be forgotten and not come to mind. At the conclusion of my discourse, the aforementioned Mr. Howe arose and remarked that the discourse which they had heard was true. On the Sabbath following, Mr. H. had his meeting at 11 o'clock, and mine was at 2 o'clock -- the same place and day. -- Mr. H. commenced his meeting by reading the 3rd chapter of the Acts of the Apostles, and laboured much to show, that the!
last days were those when the spirit of God was poured out on the day
of pentecost, the effect of which some attributed to wine, but the Apostle informed them it is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel and it shall come to pass in the last days saith God "I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh." The gentleman so unwilling to admit of the fact, that God would give more revelation, thought to evade it by having the words of Joel fulfilled on the days of pentecost, or so far as related to that part which should produce visions, dreams, prophecies, &c., which of necessity would make an addition to revelation, which Mr. H. could not admit of without suffering the loss of his modern gospel. But this was to all, we learned from this advocate of modern reform, he fain would have had us believe, and that too with the bible in our hands, that the Jews to whom the son of God came in person in Palestine, comprised the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, which every biblical reader knows was not the fact, and that no such union ever existed since the d!
ays of Rehaboam, son of Solomon; thus he designed to show to the people, that the covenant of which the prophets spoke, that it should be established with the house of Judah and Israel, was then established, as he said, for one week, according to Daniel -- which thing, every reader of the New Testament knows was not done even with the house of Judah in a national point of light, for the apostle testifies to the Jews, "that seeing ye judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, lo we turn to the Gentiles."
Times and Seasons, Vol.2, p.515
To give place to what I have to insert I leave Mr. H. for the present. Brother Wm. O Clark arrived here last night from Mineral Point and vicinity, where he has baptized 17 members, and a prospect for more. In this vicinity there is a spirit of inquiry after the truth which may result in the salvation of souls through the ministry of the servants of God. Br. Clark unites with me in saying, dear Brethren, we pray you by the love you have for the work of the Lord -- for the salvation of men, that you use your influence to have some intelligent labourers sent or directed to these parts, for truly the harvest is great and laborers few. -- We want men that are workmen, skilled in the science of heavenly things. We do hope that this our request to you may not be unheeded. My health is such as not to admit of my preaching as much as I could wish; my past exposure having affected my lungs very much.
Times and Seasons, Vol.2, p.516
I close for the present by subscribing myself, your friend and fellow laborer in the kingdom of God. AMASA LYMAN.

A precinct is not a town, it is a subdivision of a voting ward. Go into GenWeb and read about Stephenson Co., it gives all the town names from the time the county was formed. Amos Davis that resided in Stephenson Co., Ill, is not the Amos Davis that took Mary Ann Simpson to raise it was his son and his wife Mary Jane Scott. And they were in Nauvoo, Hancock, Ill in 1840. I am in touch with a genealogist that lives right near Stephenson Co. and he assures me that there was no Brewster, not only that, but for the past 2 years he has searched all of Stephenson Co., for some record of the Lyman Simpson family to no avail. The Nauvoo records of Amos Davis and Mary Ann Scott can be found at http://earlylds.com. I do have the record of Mary Ann Simpson and William James Powell and in his history that he wrote Amos Davis, who took Mary Ann in was with him from the time they left Ill. At no time do they ever speak of Stephenson Co., Ill. So unless you have proof positive that th!
ere was A Brewster, Stephenson, Ill and ypou can show that Mary Ann Clapp Simpson died there, I will go ahead with my searching in other parts of Ill. for her

I thought you might be interested to know that there is a Brewster in Stephenson County in the 1840 census.
The following is from the 1840 census index from Ancestry
Amos Davis Brewster Precinct, Stephenson, Illinois.
1 Male 20-30 1 Female under 5 1 Female 15-20.
There are 63 families listed in Brewster Precinct in the 1840 census. This is the only census that lists Brewster Precinct and is at a perfect time to fit Mary Ann Simpson's birth.

Sandy, Thank you, I did not know about the Corbin Collection, but I will get into it. Our Mary Ann was suppose to have died in Brewster, Stephenson Co., Ill,6 Oct 1840, the same day her last child Mary Ann Simpson was born. I have found that there is no Brewster in Stephenson Co., never was, it was only a ferry operated by a man named Brewster. I do think that she died close to Nauvoo, in Hancock Co., Ill. I had seen a Julia listed as a daughter of Adolphus Clapp in some records that I was reading at the Family History Center. If I run across anything further on Julia, I will gladly send it to you.

I see you have extracted some of the early records from Northampton. I didn't know if you have searched the Corbin Collection (1745-1892)It does list:
3 children of Adolphus Clap as: Julia, Hannah, Phebe, baptised on Sept 4 (I was unable to read the year)They were listed in the 1st Cong Church Records.
also listed is a Mary-Anna, do Adolphus
death. apr 23, Clap____, son of Adolphus, 5 yrs, 11 mos.
An Adolphus, s of Adolphus and Hanna Clapp is burried inMain St Cem in E'ton. Died April 23, 1803-6 yrs old
So Julia did exist and was the child of Adolphus
Hope this helps some, Sandy

Thanks to Sandy Moffett it's been confirmed that my wife's, Sylvia Clapp, ancestors are indeed descendent from Capt. Roger Clapp (b. 1609 in Devon England). The connection is through Asahel Clapp (# 282 in The Clapp Memorial) who's second wife, Rachel Alford is not listed in the Memorial. I look forward to telling my children about their heritage.
