I got my copy of The Clapp Memorial from Higginson Book Company,
http://www.higginsonbooks.com/
It is a very thick volume and lists the descendants of the first Clapp
settlers in America, as well as the proceedings of some family reunions,
and a few other things (sorry it is at home so I can't refer to it right
now). Higginson has basically made copies of the original pages on 8.5
* 11 paper and bound it like a college dissertation. Each request is
filled as it arrives so it is expensive (about $100) and takes a while,
like 6 weeks maybe - I don't really remember. You might also try your
local Inter-library loan department -- I am amazed at what mine can find.
The History of Dorchester, MA is interesting too -- that my town library
got from the Harvard College library.
Another resource, if you can get access, is Heritage Quest Online. It
is available through some libraries. It is a massive project that is
scanning old genealogy and town history books and other things. I don't
think these Clapp books were available when I went looking for them but
I have found other things there. The best part is that they indexed the
scans so you can search their whole collection for a name or place or
whatever. I have access to the University copy as a staff member, but
if a local college has access, you might be able to get at it by using a
computer in the college library.
Another source is The Winthrop Society: http://www.winthropsociety.org/
That site has an excerpt from Roger's Memoirs.
Happy Hunting -- it is stunning what is out there is you can just figure
out what to look for. I found the website about Roger's immigration
boat by googling "Mary and John" 1630. Bingo - up it came. I started
laughing so hard I practically fell out of my chair!

I've just started this search from by ggrandfather's death certificate. It states his father's name was Godlik Fenningsdorf (Pfenningsdorf) b. Germany and his mother was Mary Clapp b. Michigan probably the Detroit area. Does anyone tie into her? Like I say, I just started the Clapp search. Thanks for any help or pointing me in the right direction.
Nicholas is not the father to Mary Ann Simpson, he is the grandfather several times removed to Mary Ann Clapp. And I have to go to the FHL this afternoon, so I will get the data on Nicholas Clapp and send it to you.
Marla, Since communicating with you, I found a person that had the Clapp Memorial Book written by Ebenezer Clapp. The dates are all off, but the family connections are fairly accurate, I do think in one of your letters to me you were uncertain as to whether it was Adolphus or Nicholas that Mary Ann came from. According to the book the line goes Mary Ann, Isaac, John 1768, John 1741, Nathaniel 1712/13, Ebenezer, Nathaniel and then to Nicholas whose father was Richard. Richard being a cousin to Roger Clapp from Devon, England.
We do not know for sure who John Taylor Powell was named for, we think that he was named after John Taylor who was prominent in the LDS Church, but we have nat made the connection.
Thanks for the info. I'll do more research on the Arlington, TX connection
when I return from vacation. Though my Clapps wound up in Texas, I don't
believe this is my direct line. I just want to solve the mystery of this little
girl's family and reunite her ancestors with her picture.
My Mary Ann Clapp was born in 1810 in Mass and she married Lyman Simpson who was born 25 May 1797 also in Mass he died in 1882 in Indiana. Mary Ann died 10 Feb 1840 in Ill. after giving birth to Mary Ann Simpson on 6 Feb 1840. Mary Ann's parents were Isaac Clapp and Vesta Reynolds. Mary Ann Simpson was born in Brewster, Stephenson, Ill and died 4 Nov 1911 in Duschene, Utah, where she is buried. Mary Ann Simpson married William James Powell and I am searching the line of their son John Taylor Powell born 3 Jan 1883 in Castle Dale, Utah. He was married to Mary Ann Smith and they had 13 children.
Albert Deane Clapp was born in Staten Island NY October 13, 1882. I have located him in the 1900 and 1920 census. In 1920 he was married to a Gertrude unknown who was born in NJ and there was a daughter Ethel who was born in PA. Ethel was born about 1912.
Albert resided in Washington DC in 1920. He worked as a civil engineer.
I cannot locate this family after the 1920 sighting in DC.
I have the rest of Albert's brother and his father, grandfather and great grandfather if anyone would like that information.
Thank you for any help you may have for me.
Nana (NAY-na) RUTHERFORD Redell
Linda,
I hope this information might help you.
History of northwestern New York : Erie, Niagara, Wyoming, Genesee and Orleans Counties New York: Lewis Historical Pub. Co., c1947, Horton, John Theodore Pg. 527. "Returning to the towns and their highways, Bennington settlement was pioneered in 1802 by John Tolles and Jacob Wright, who settled in the northeast corner, where the Holland Land Company had opened a road out of Batavia. Chauncey Loomis, his mother and brother Justin, his brother-in-law Pelatiah Casae, Jonah Barber, Ezra Ludden, George Loomis, Aaron and Adolphus CLAPP, Joseph Farnum, and Nathan CLAPP were among those who entered the Bennington Center area soon thereafter..."
This is probably your family as well as mine. This CLAPP family can easily be traced in Northhampton, Southampton and Easthampton, all in Hampshire County, Massachusetts. The problem is finding any information in New York. I do know some of Adolphus CLAPP's children moved to Michigan.
Marla

Hello Peggy: The first communication I have received in some time was from
you. My husband is descended from the same line that you are but his line
deviates after John Phillip Clapp6 and Barbara. There was another son, Adam
Clapp, who named his son John. Adam left NC and went to Tennessee with the
Boones (see Brick Church records to find the Boone family with the Clapp
family) There is extensive information on Adam and his family and he has a
DAR monument in Union County Illinois. His son, John Ike left Tennessee in
1808, married Sarah Loy and went to Alabama, then in Mississippi territory.
He is on the 1809 territorial census. John Ike took his family down the
Ohio River to Jackson Purchase territory In southwestern Kentucky on the
Mississippi River, to a town eventually called Mayfield. He was listed there
in 'Kentucky History' in 1823 as an early settler of the area. His father,
Adam 1 went from Tennessee to Indiana territory and then to Union County
Illinois, remarried after the death of his first wife and had several more
children. John Ike had a son named Adam who is my husbands ancestor.
The information that you have on the German line is the same as that
which I hava had for some years, but yours is far more extensive; I have the
names and places but not all the dates. At the present time I am spending
the summer in our motor home in the White Mountains of Arizona and do not
have all my records with me, but do have a Gedcom that may or may not be on
my notebook computer. I will attempt to get an inline email pedigree typed
up from the FTW program that I do have and send it on. Welcome cousin,
however distant. This Adam Clapp/John I Clapp line stayed in Kentucky and
manyof them still live there in Mayfield. My husband's grandmother was the
daughter of James Marshall Clapp, the son of Adam Clapp 2 and she married a
Smithson and that family resides in SE Missouri. The last we knew of this
direct line was Bernard Clapp in Graves County, childless, the brother to my
husband's grandmother. We visited with him in 1997 and have not been able to
contact him since about 2000.
Sorry about the long email, I am sure you will be getting many.
Please direct emails to Mary Hunt kittyh1k(a)yahoo.com and thank you for
taking on an enormous job.
