Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I last posted on this list in 1999. I have found a few new things to add to my search and hope that someone on this list is doing a line which will connect with mine.Solon D. Clapp b August 1839 in VT is found in 1860-1900 in Allegany County, NY with wife Rhoda and children
George A. Clapp b 1856 NY m to Idell Franklin b NY
Mary Clapp b abt 1862
Lucy b abt 1866
William b abt 1858
Lucy was with her parents in 1900 so there is a good chance she did not marry.
George and Idell had this family while living in Staten Island, NY
Faber Franklin Clapp b 1880 m to Frances Minnetta ? for last name
had one child Dorothy who may have been a high school teacher in S.I.
Albert Dean Clapp b 1882 m to Gertrude R. ? b NJ had one child Ethel
Albert Dean Clapp was a civil engineer and a surveyor in Washington DC. I found him and his family there in 1920 census.
Laura Rosalie Clapp b 1886 d 1892 diphtheria
Lillian Rhoda Clapp b 1889 d 1892 diphtheria
Elizabeth Louise Clapp b 1891 d 1892 diphtheria
Ethel LaVerne Clapp b 1895 died 1903.
I also found death dates for Idell d 1924 in Staten Island
George A. Clapp d 1910.
My only leads would be Dorothy ( dau of Faber) or Ethel ( the dau of Albert) .
Has anyone run across this line while researching? Any help or suggestions appreciated
Sincerely,
Nana (NAY-na) RUTHERFORD Redell

I figured it out with lots of help from the other list members -- Harold
Clapp of Rochester is the person who started Clapp's Baby Food. Clapp's
was bought by Mott's, the apple sauce company and there I learned his
name and some key dates. Yesterday I found him on a census that listed
his occupation as President of a baby food manufacturing company. Rarely
are these genealogical finds so totally clear!
I've attached a report out of my database that lists what I know. I just
realized though that one tidbit I omitted is that Clapp's Baby Food was
originally a division of American Home Products, which is currently
known as Wyeth, the pharmaceutical giant.
Anyone know more about his family? Somewhere his line and mine are
associated, but I don't know where.
Thanks for the help, my distant relatives!

Duffy-Mott Purchases Clapp's Baby Foods
In 1953, Duffy-Mott purchased the Clapp's Baby Foods division of American Home
Products Company. Clapp's is the oldest name in baby food, the inspiration of
Harold Clapp of Rochester, who launched this $300 million business quite
inadvertently in 1921. Clapp's wife was ill at the time and it fell to him to
prepare a special diet for his young son. The formula called for beef broth,
vegetables and cereal. The infant did so well on the "soup" that Clapp made it
available to friends, then sold it through drug stores. When Duffy-Mott took
over Clapp's, it increased its line of 37 items to nearly 100. Subsequently,
the company re-vamped its Williamson, NY plant to accommodate the demands of
its apple products and discontinued the Clapp's line.

Wow - thank you. I had found the artist, but none of the other information.
All of my Clapps are from Saratoga County, New York. The baby food was
started in Upstate New York and my mother, daughter of Marion Clapp,
granddaughter of George Fox Clapp, says that whoever it is, was related
to her grandfather.
One other thing I know is that at the University of Iowa Libraries, in
Special Collections I think, there are brochures from Clapp's baby food:
http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/spec-coll/Louis/chefpam-a-j.html
The collection has two pamphlets:
*CLAPPS: /Announcing Clapp's Chopped Foods for Young Children/. [n.p.].
Clapps, [n.d.]. 5pp. : 15cm.*
*CLAPPS: /Your Baby's Diet and Your Baby's Health/. Rochester: Clapps,
[n.d.]. 12pp. : 20cm. *
If you do an online request they can send you a photocopy at no charge.
The request page is here:
Manuscript Users Registration Form
located at http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/spec%2Dcoll/users.htm
The form will ask for the MsC #, which is "Szathmary"
and the name of the collection is "Clapp's culinary pamphlets"
Thank you very much.
