Hello,
I'm looking for information on John Henry CLAYTOR and Violet Hazel CLAPP, who
were married in 1912, probably in TX or OK.
John Henry Claytor was born 1879, son of John Sr. of MO or PA. He was born
in the town of Denton, TX (which I assume is in Denton Co?). John left home
at age 14 or 15 to work on above-ground mines in Tennessee and Texas. Violet
was born 1892 in Sulfur Springs, Hopkins Co., TX, daughter of George W. Clapp
and Martha Gibbs Caswell.
After their marriage, they moved west through Oklahoma, Utah, Colorado and
Idaho, finally settling in California's central valley (and having 8 children
along the way). According to the 1920 census, John worked as a "shot timer"
(anyone know what that is? - it may be misspelled). He later worked as an
electrician, lineman and powerhouse operator for various mining and electric
companies. The last name is often misspelled or mis-read as "CLAYTON" - even
on official documents such as the 1920 census.
I'm descended from their daughter, Gladys Claytor, who is my grandmother.
Any help you can give me about these individuals and their families would be
most appreciated. I'm also willing to share what I have - I don't know
anything more about the Claytors, but I do have some additional Clapp info.
Some of you have seen this (or a similar) query before - if so, I apologize
for the inconvenience. Thank you to those of you on the cc: list who've
helped me with these families - if/when I get more information, I can forward
it to you if you're interested.
Thanks!
