Thought others might be interested in these notes, which include the obituaries of both (I am not related, but notice others don't have either his correct death date, or her death date at all):
1. Holt CLANTON (died age 70) died 17 Oct 1829 in Columbia County, GA.
June 3, 1818, Augusta Chronicle: HOLT CLANTON and Catherine Dogget (sic) were administrator and Administratrix of Reuben Dogget, when they advertised the sale of Reuben's plantation on Uchee Creek, near Low's Mills, Columbia County.
In May 1821, Holt Clanton advertised for rent two properties, both about 9 miles from Augusta: one on the Washington, the other on the Columbia Roads and about a mile from the Quaker Springs; both were well improved with water and "every convenience for a family."
October 31, 1829, Augusta Chronicle: DIED, at his residence, in Columbia County, on Saturday morning the 17th inst. last, HOLT CLANTON, Esq., in the 70th year of his age. He was a native of Virginia, and removed to this State in 1802 - was a soldier of the Revolution - and in the trying struggles of that time, laid the ____ of those firm its Republican principles, and that patriotic devotion to his country, which strengthen and dignified his character and distinguished his life to its ____ moment. Without an enemy in the world - in peace with ___ mankind - and calmly resigned to the will of that Almighty Being who gave the existence which it took away, he left an affection white and seven children to mourn the close of a life endeared to them by his manly virtues, and parental [influence?] - and which, like the mold and beautiful evening of an Autumnal day, gave the cheering and confident hope of a pure and unclouded morrow.
The Will of a "HOLT CLANTON" - signed October 20, 1826; proved November 2, 1829. Wife, Catherine: Daughters: Elizabeth McKee Clanton and Catherine - wife of Benjamin Paul. Sons: Littleberry, James, Nathaniel. Executors: Andrew Edwards, William Holt. Witnesses: William Germany, John Foyal, Maurice Bradberry, Jeremiah Darby.
November 10, 1830: EXECUTOR'S SALE: Will be sold at the late residence of HOL CLANTON, deceased, in Columbia County, on Monday, the 27th day of December, next, the tract of land and premises where the deceased lately resided, eight miles about Augusta, on the Washington Road - containing about 380 acres, the most of which is in a state fit for cultivation; the improvements are in good repair, and it is a stand well calculated for a place of entertainment for travelers; and excellent business might be done with groceries, as it is the public site in the district, for Courts, Musters, etc., with a dense rich population in the neighborhood. Also, 100 acres of good pine land, well timbered, lying on the road from Augusta to Columbia Court House, one mile above the Quaker Springs. On this tract there is a tolerably comfortable Dwelling House, a good kitchen, and an excellent well of water in the yard; and about 45 acres under good fence. Also, at the same time, about 10 Neg!
roes, consisting of men, boys, and girls, and one woman; the stock of horses, and one prime mule, a good yoke of oxen, and the stock of cattle, hogs, and sheep; eight or nine hundred bushels of corn; about ten thousand pounds of prime fodder, the crop of cotton, and about thirty bushels of seed peas. Also, a good mahogany sideboard, dining table and enus, a bureau, and sundry other articles of household and kitchen furniture; and plantation tools, and sundry other articles. December 24, 1830, Augusta Chronicle: NOTICE: Four months after date, application will be made to the Court of Ordinary of Columbia County, when sitting for ordinary purposes, for leave to sell all the real estate of HOLT CLANTON, late of said County, deceased. TURNER CLANTON, N.H. CLANTON, Ex'rs., Oct. 30.
Holt married Catherine NEWSOME (died age 67). Catherine died 23 Oct 1830 in Columbia County, GA.
November 10, 1830, Augusta Chronicle: DIED, at her residence, in Columbia County, on Saturday night, the 23rd ult., MRS. CATHERINE CLANTON, widow of the late HOLT CLANTON, Esq., in the 67th year of her age. Mrs. Clanton has been, for about eight years, a pious and highly esteemed member of the Baptist Church, and was the affectionate regard of her numerous relatives, neighbors, and friends, and the attentions of a large family, closely endeared to her by a life of the most kind, judicious and affectionate maternal care, she died, after much suffering, borne with the most mild and patient fortitude and resignation, with the richest reward of a well-spent and useful life - a confident hope of a happy immortality, through the merits of her beloved Redeemer.
