Your William Marion Clanton, aka "Bud", is the older brother of my ggrandfather Lewis Bird Clanton. I have information about the Clantons and Ashcrafts and would love to exchange it with you. [Their father James Marion Clanton married Sarah Jane Ashcraft.] The previous post outlines the generations, so I won't be redundant.

William Marion Clanton was born in Alabama. He married Martha A. Riddle in Mississippi. After beginning their family there, they later moved to Texas. William was the son of John Marion Clanton, who was born in Georgia but married and resided in Alabama. John was the son of David C. Clanton, who was born in S. Carolina and married in Georgia and probably died in Alabama. David was the son of Nathaniel Clanton and Susannah ? of S. Carolina and Alabama. Nathanial was the son of David Clanton and Elizabeth Ligon of Virginia and S. Carolina. David Clanton was the son of Richard Clanton and Agnes West of Virginia. Richard was the son of William Clanton and Mary Seward Holt of Virginia. William was the son of Edward Richard Clanton of James City County, Virginia. So, you see, the family progressed from Virginia to South Carolina and Georgia, on to Alabama, and William Marion Clanton then moved on to Texas. Hope this helps.

My ggrandfather's brother was PD Clanton and had a son JW Clanton. I have PD's death certificate from Bosque County, Tx. (Irdell) It was signed by JW Clanton. Also, believe his brother was a druggist in Irdell. I have more if you want to email me at ruth.e.baker(a)sbcglobal.net.

After reading this message for the past two years, I think I have figured out who your Clanton's are and were they came from. I believe Piquans Daniel was married 2nd to Julia Rhodes. William Clanton was his brother and they were the sons of John J. Clanton and Sarah Perry-Clanton of SC, Cherokee County, AL and St. Clair County, AL. William was living for a time at age 19 with his sister and family Lucy Clanton-Turner and John Turner in Etowah County, Alabama. I lose track of him after that so assumed he may have followed his brother to Texas. If you want more information, email me at ruth.e.baker(a)sbcglobal.net

I'm not related to any of you, but I collect old holiday cards from the early part of the century (the last one) and I recently got a couple that were addressed to "Ruth Clanton, Norwalk Calif". One is postmarked 1912 and the other, 1917. I am passing this info along only for any help it may be in verifying what members of the family were living where and when.
