Am searching for CLANTONs who lived in and around Audrain or Callaway Counties, Missouri the latter part of the 1800s. I have a Elizabeth "Bettie" CLANTON who married a Hiram THRELKELD arount 1880 or 1885 there. Thank you very much.
Regards, Dan Smith.
Shirley,
I corresponded with a descendant of this John Clanton, b. 1794 many years
ago. My computer crashed and I lost all of the information. Please let me
now if you hear anything.
Thank you--Renee Schaeffer

Subject: [CLANTON] John Clanton and Native American marriage
> This from our family genealogy book....Nancy Bullard b. McMinn Co. Tenn
1814, married John Clanton in 1829. John was "part" Cherokee.
> Some researchers think that John's father had a white wife in S. C. and an
indian wife in Tenn., and that our John was a result of this union between
him and the native American woman.
> "John was killed while in the government service trying to quell indian
uprisings in Cherokee Co., Alabama in 1838, at the age of 28." A different
book says that he only served for three months, was out of the service 2
years before he died, and I tend to agree with this because I have a copy of
his muster roll showing a date of June 25, 1836 and the fact that he was at
Garrettsville for a period of three months during the Creek War under
command of Capt. Donaldson's Co., Alabama Mtd. Vol. Militia.
> Nancy Clanton filed with the U.S. government for a land grant as per the
Indian Act of 1855 and was granted 160 acres in Newton co., Mo.
> My problem is this....
> We have a John Clanton born in 1794 and "our" John who was born in 1810.
When Nancy first applied for the land grant, she was informed that a John
Clanton had already been granted land under this act and that he was the
John Clanton who had served in the Creek War. This was several years after
"our" John had died. The John Clanton holding the land was later found to
have fraudently claimed the land and the grant went to Nancy.
> If "our" John's father DID have another wife, a white woman in S. C.,
could she have had a son also named John who was born in 1794? And could
this half-brother of "our" John been the one to claim the land? We do not
know who the father of our John Clanton was, but we do know that he was
"part" Cherokee. The bloodline clearly shows in pictures of his and Nancy's
children.

Bob,
Am I on the right track? Charles W. Clanton(1767 in VA) married Hannah Christian Etheridge. Their son was Daniel Sydney Clanton. He married Caroline Dugger in 1814, and they had nine children. Which of those children is our direct descendant?

I have a John W. CLANTON b. June 2 or Feb 6 1908 mother surname LOWRIE d. Mariposa, I think CA in my notes. Don't why I wrote it down, but a rumour in our family was that someone in the family plot was buried alone in the cornor because he married a Native American. The only person alone there is George F. Baker that died 3 Feb 1895 and is buried at the Addison Baker plot at Riverside Cemetery, Denver, CO. This plot also has Charlotte and Addison BAKER who where first cousins who married. I believe this George is Charlotte's brother. Have you heard of anyone in your family being buried with a very big white horse as a tomb stone? Carole
I am seeking information about John Clanton (b. maybe 1810.) of McMinn Co. Tenn who married Nancy Bullard. He was killed in government service in 1838, most likely in Cherokee Co., Ala. Who were his parents?
Shirley
Your Marion Clanton is son of Charles Clanton, son of Francis Marion
Clanton, son of James Clanton who came to Illinois from North Carolina. I
will be happy to share info as I need info on your Marion Clanton and his
siblings and descendants for our Clanton history. You can e-mail me at
skyla(a)sasquatch.com Thanks, Tom.
