Were your Clanton family members slave owners? My great-grandfather Jordan
William Clanton was born June 4, 1863 in Littleton, North Carolina to Louisa
and Epsom. I have just started researching my family history and this is the
first information I have seen on any other people name Clanton. The map of
North Carolina shows Littleton as being just inside North Carolina not far
from the Virginia state line.
Johnine,
As I noted in my last message, you can confidently through out the
possibility of "Mary" being Mary Seward Holt.
If you decide to pursue our Mary's identity, try Mary SEWARD, daughter of
Mary Holt (dau of Randall & Elizabeth Hansford Holt) & John Seward.
Good researching, Beth
Beth;
Thanks for the information. In my notes I have her as possibly being
Mary Seward Holt. Also I know there were some other speculations. I'll keep
looking.
Thanks again, Johnine Clanton Phillips
Beth, thank you for an important message. I have found genealogies
filed with LDS that are highly inaccurate, and yours is a good warning.
In researching my father's line, one of the LDS files listed only 5
siblings and in reality there were 10 children. Some descendants were
attached to the wrong parents (including mine) and other indications
were that my line did not exist at all! So beware of accepting anything
that you have not verified yourself and make every effort to actually
see the primary documentation or at the very least the secondary
documentation. Thanks, JoAnn
Johnine,
Thank you for your reply. The comments that follow are addressed to the
entire Clanton List, not just to you.
My question to you concerning Mary Holt was precipitated by the practice of
many "collectors" of genealogical data of simply accepting information
because it is being circulated by several people. Unfortunately, because of
this practice a great deal of misinformation is accepted as "fact" by many
people. The Mary Holt situation is a perfect example.
Mary, the wife of William Clanton [actually, this too is questionable] has
often been named the daughter of William & Elizabeth Seward Holt. Careful
examination of wills reveals, however, that Mary Holt, dau of William &
Elizabeth was still unmarried at the time of her parents' deaths in 1726 &
1737, respectively. Mary, wife of William Clanton, was a grandmother by
1740 (Elizabeth, dau of John & Amy Clanton was born 23 May 1740).
It is entirely possible, however, that MARY SEWARD, daughter of Mary Holt
(dau of Randall & Elizabeth Hansford Holt) & John Seward was the Mary who
married William Clanton. She was named as orphan of John Seward 5 Mar
1698/9 & 4 Jul 1699; she was named in her grandmother Holt's will in 1708/9
as Mary Seward; she was not named in her mother's (Mary Holt Seward Gray)
31 Mar 1756 will, even though her brother William Seward was named. If Mary
Seward was Mary Clanton, wife of William, that would make sense, because
Mary Clanton's will was recorded in Surry Co on 21 May 1751, five years
before the death of Mary Holt Seward Gray, and it would explain why Mary
Holt Seward Gray did not name her daughter in her will.
So, you see, while it is possible that Mary was a Holt, there is thus far
no primary or secondary documentation to support the "theory".
I realize that it is tempting to add a maiden name to a female ancestor
and, thusly, acquire an entire new line; particularly, a line as affluent
and influential as Randall Holt's family. But without primary or secondary
documentation, or at least a preponderance of evidence, it is a very poor
genealogical practice.
Why not name Mary as Mary unknown, with a footnote stating the possibility
of being Mary Holt, etc..
If we are simply collectors of genealogical data, with no thought as to its
accuracy, we are creating nothing more than a house of cards. Do not trust
anyone's work until you see the sources from which it was obtained. And
that includes the data from the Family History Library. The genealogies
which they accept are not checked for accuracy. While they are wonderful
"maps" to follow, they are no more accurate than the work of the people who
submit them..many of whom are "collectors" and not researchers.
Good researching, Beth
Linda,
What are your sources for the first three generations which you connect
below?
I and several other genealogists have spent many hours attempting to locate
primary, or even secondary, records to prove the association of John,
Marmaduke and Edward. To date, we have found none.
Perhaps you can show us the way. Beth

Beth;
My records come from several sources, but I have no documentation
myself other than family. I have gotten information from John W. Clanton of
Vicksburg, Miss.(?) he may have moved since I talked to him last; his father
and mother, Bryan W. and Dorothy E. Clanton of Humboldt, Tenn., Billy R.
Sharp, "Kandi" Clanton of Big Springs, TX., Tom & Jim Goldrup of Ben Lamond,
Calif., and the LDS records. I will look in my records to see if I can find
something else.

There are two brothers in California who are writing a book about the
CLANTON family in America. My grandmother, Elizabeth "Lizzie" CLANTON
DANIELS is one of the names mentioned in that book....also Elizabeth
CLANTON's family. This book is in the works but not published yet. You
might find something about your CLANTON family in their records; or if your
family connects they can be added to the book.
Their e-mail is: skyla(a)sasquach.com (Tom and Jim Goldrup)

Johnine,
What is your source for "William who married Mary Holt"? Many researchers
have spent innumerable hours attempting to find primary documentation to
substantiate that statement. Thus far, it remains only a guess.
I look forward to your reply. Beth

Edward and Sarah Clanton of Brunswick County, VA; had a daughter Sarah,
but she married July 28 1748 in Brunswick County, VA to William Lashley.
I have no idea who Sarah that married James Petty is the daughter of...
probably one of the earlier Clantons. Tom.
This Sarah may be the daughter of Edward and Sarah (Evans) Clanton. Sarah
died in Brunswick Co., VA. in 1748. She had a will, and it is that will that
documents her family. I do not have a copy of that will. I know nothing more
of that part of the family as I descend from the William that married Mary
Holt. William is believed to be the brother of Edward.
Hope this helps in some small way.
