Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Margaret,
I don't know how to help you. I just used the icon for "Internet" on the
welcome screen for AOL. I typed in the URL for the CLANTON of the Month,
which I know you would not know off the top of your

My next question I have would need to ask you is what version of AOL are you

Hi everyone--
This may end up being a lengthy post and I apologize ahead of time...
First item...
A new catagory has been created on the CLANTON Web. I have titled it Offline
Resources and will either expand it to include events or place events in the
Miscellanous catagory. Have not thought it completely through at this point
in time.
The new catagory is the home to publications, newsletters, microfilm, etc.
that can be purchased, subscribed to, etc. that have been written by
Clanton(s), about Clanton(s), etc. The URL for that page (for direct access)
is http://members.aol.com/clantonweb/publish.html.
Second item...
More news on the Archived Messages at Rootsweb has come in.
One point that I would like to clarify in all this, if I have not mentioned
this before...by archiving the messages this is an added convenience to
vacationers or someone that has been away for whatever reasons. Archiving
the messages would allow these folks to catch up on what had transpired in
their absence.
Second point...Rootsweb and archiving messages to a website
I need clarification from CLANTON list subscribers is does everyone have web
access?
Naive me, I thought if people have email access that web access was
automatic. This point was proved incorrect to me the other day. I would
need to couple of volunteers with web access to do lookups for those without
web access...should not be toooo time consuming unless our list multiplies
itself overnite.
The following is taken from a Rootsweb communication that might help answer
some of the questions of what we have to look forward to...anyway, this is
technical mumbo that could clarify some of your questions!
So, what's the new web-based system to be? Evolving, for a start.
In the initial phases, for those lists that are participating, the
most recent messages will be available via the web in a threaded
format. (This is what Marc has been working on.) The older messages
(including the old Maiser archives) will be available via a clunky
search engine (like that used for ROOTS-L on http://searches.rootsweb.com).
(I've been working on this, at least, until I got diverted by all that
stuff up there in the first paragraph.) We hope to do two additional
things: find a new search engine that will index both the threaded and
unthreaded message bases, and as time allows, convert the unthreaded
message bases to threaded. There are some open issues here that we
haven't worked through yet, so it will be awhile, but that's the target.
What about passwords? These have proven much more controversial
than I ever expected. I do understand (shoot, I pushed for them) why
they are useful and solve a lot of problems. The difficulty is that
they seem to introduce at least as many problems as they solve. Anything
that
requires more work from the system administration people is almost
guaranteed to be a non-starter, and passwords unfortunately fit that
criteria. Besides having to deal with people who can't remember passwords
or who type them in the wrong case, etc., there's also the problem
that to change a password will require manual intervention (we haven't
developed the software yet so the listowner could do so automatically),
and a password that is stable and never changed isn't much security.
If your archived messages need to be secure, a simple password won't
be enough to secure them. If your archive messages don't need to be
secure, then there's no need for a password. Bottomline: passwords
make more work, but add little additional security. So, no passwords, at
least not for now, probably never.
That was two points I wanted you to be aware of from Rootsweb. Their
projected change over date is December 1, 1997. I will keep you posted as to
the progression.
I feel like the absent-minded professor...I think that is all the news item I
have!
Next on the to do list for CLANTON Web...
1. Format next month's CLANTON of the Month.
2. Add Christmas decor to the pages.
3. Work on the Family Photo Album (Mary Louise has sent me some wonderful
photocopies of family members and other news items that I have been
(figuratively) sitting on).
4. There are some resource extracts that need to be formatted and added to
Land Records part of the page.
Till later,
Susan

Does anyone know where the documentation or source of information on the
assumed ancestry of William Clanton who died 1726 in Surry County,
Virginia. We have seen records that prove the existence of the earlier
Edward Clanton, Marmaduke Clanton and John Clanton (who came from
England). BUT nowhere have we found any records linking anyone together
as father and son outside of the IGI which doesn't mean anything other
than someone said it was. We have found a number of errors in the IGI.
We descend from John Clanton who married Amy Wyche...his kids were
born in the 1740's-50's. Their son John married Sally (or Sarah)
McGlammery (Meglamre), daughter of the Reverand John Meglamre
(McGlammery) and had three sons and a daughter..Drury, Henry (father of
Newman Haynes Clanton), Robert, Rebecca and Jackie. Drury married
Jemima Walpole and they had a son named John Meglamre Clanton and he was
born 1808 in Davidson County, Tennessee and married Mary Griggs. They
came to California in 1853.
Charles Clanton who went to Georgia does NOT descend from John and
Amy Wyche Clanton. There is no evidence that we have located (he sure
isn't named in the Will) that Charles who went to Georgia is a son of
Charles Clanton (son of Edward and Sarah (Evans-?) Clanton. This older
Charles names only two sons...Sion and Stephen.
If anyone has anything to document how these earlier Clanton
families fit together please let us know.
Thanks. Tom and Jim Goldrup.

Margaret wrote that William Clanton was born in 1631 in England and died
1726 VA and married Mary Holt who died VA. She has his son as being John

being born in VA in 1683; also his father Edward as being born in VA. Does
anyone know anything about this?

Hi everyone--
I had stopped for a period of time adding to the archives section of the
website till I got a concensus of how everyone felt about this information on
the Internet. The majority of you see the Internet as a tool for gathering
information and do not take the information gathered their as "gospel" and
realize that this information will also needed to be researched to prove its
validity. Since majority felt this way, I will let Rootsweb archive our
postings to the mailing list and continue to archive the postings myself to
our website. At present, 30 of the 50+ CLANTON-Digest(s) have been uploaded
and linked on the "Archives" page of the website.
I hope this decision does not diminish in any way the quality or quantity to
the mail list postings.
Thanks again to everyone for your kinds words and continued support.

Hi everyone--
Just a quick note to let everyone know that website updates are complete for
the moment. One note of interest that you all may be interested in is that
since I implemented the counter the website has had 429 visitors as of this
morning at 7:39am EST. I reset the counter, mainly for curiousity to see how
many visitors we have with the new webring in place...
I have checked the links to the best of my ability this morning, but feel sure
there is one that is not working properly somewhere within the pages!
Afterall, this is Murphy's Law...
Goodnight all!
Susan
