I was recently in contact with someone who said they were related to a William Clanin who died in 1879 and married to a woman first name, Evaline who is part Indian. I can't piece it together but thought i'd share the information.

Clyde Clanin my great grandfather was darn close to 100 when he passed. His brother Clifford George Clanin was 59 when he died, but I assume they are the cousins to whom you refer. Looks like i need to dig in and figure out what William it is that my dad remembers. He says he knows a William was my grandfathers brother but i have many census and I don't see it. So i'm convinced it was a cousin. I look on your side of the family.
Good luck trying to figure out the Indian connection. My father seems to think we have a link on the other side of the family and i can't find it either.
Thanks for the response. I'll go dive back into the haystack.

There are many Williams in the Clanin line. 2 branches of Clanins from Marion In area went to illinois one-my branch settled into Woodford County. The other branch went to Fulton County Illinois. Many other Clanins from Grant Co went west farther still to Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and other states.
The william in my branch is William S. Clannin, married Charlotte Gilpin they had 5 children. William Clanin served in the civil war union side. He died in Indiana. The only child to move to Illinois was my great Grandfather George Washington Clanin. Its been said that Charlotte was an Indian, seneca possibly, but I cant find it. A lot of my Williams descendants have strong indian features.
I was told by my grandfather that Charlotte was snubbed and not welcomed into the family. When she was buried she got a small stone beside william that says wife of.. Funny thing is she's listed as white on the federal census!
My grandfather Clifford Clyde Clanin was named after some cousins( 2nd?) that died at early age in Indiana.

If anyone has info on Benjamin Clannin (CLANIN) 1740-1783 who lived in Newburyport Mass, fought in the revolutionary war- parentage or birthplace i'd been interested in anything you can share. The most convincing evidence I have of his birth year is from his Revolutionary war records (1740) I have so much on the descendants of Benjamin and Mary (Harris) Clanin that i can probably look up specific questions for you. (lol in my paper files so it may take some time to find)
My grandfather always insisted that one of his ancestors came to america with william Penn as a secretary, if so i cannot find any evidence of this. If that ancestor came to america then, i couldn't find anyone on the ships manifest of passengers. he may have been a sailor or stowaway if my grandfathers tale has any merit.
I'm not actively working on the CLANIN's right now. But if more info on Benjamin comes to light please keep me in the loop.
Just wanted to mention that my grandfather Clifford's middle name was Clyde. Theres a story that goes along with my grandfather's name, I'll have to look through my notes so i have it right. My grandfather lived to 96 and passed away 2 years ago. He took me to Grant county IN. about 10 years ago and we visited the old homestead where his father was born, we visited Thrailkill Cemetery and I spent hours in the Grant County Library. George Washington Clanin left Grant co IN and moved to Woodford Co. Illinois.
I still have living uncle and cousins in Marion IN.
my line Benjamin/Mary Harris - Samuel/Hannah Thompson -Ruben/Mary Clevenger - William/Charlotte Gilpin - George Washington/Mary Black - Clifford/Serena Gill - Faye my mother deceased/my father still living and -Me

I am also a Thompson Clanin (Grant County) descendant. Thompson's son Clyde was my great grandmother. I knew my great grandfather well as he lived to a ripe old age. I remember some little things he would tell me about his parents. He felt his mother died from having too many babies which is probably why he only had one child. anyway...
I have read that the Clanin name is probably an altered form of the Scottish name McClanahan.

My great grandfather Clyde Clanin of Grant County, Indiana had a brother named Connie. My father remembers him and remembers they called him Con. Their father's name was Thompson. I don't recall anyone saying we were part Cherokee, so maybe there is another Connie Clanin (wife Mildred) out there.

Hopefully you will get this. My great grandfather was Clyde Clanin (born in Switzer or Swayzee, Grant County, Indiana) and I spent much time with him. My father, Jack Clanin Brooks lived with him while growing up and he remembers going to visit relatives in Illinois once. It might have been a William Clanin I am not sure. Jack thinks it was a brother of Clyde but I can't find evidence of that. If you can tell me more about William that would be great. If Your family has roots to Grant county, Indiana we are probably relatives.
