Hello Cousins,
I am junking my computer and getting a new one
Thursday. An IBM that I am purchasing from my internet
provider WebFire. They will also service it for the first year
under warrenty then for a fee. If I have problems, I just
call their service techs and don't have to listen to music
all night until a tech is available. If need be I just take it
back to their office and they will fix it.
I should only be "off the air" for only Thursday night,
if at all. I finally got all the email letters and the email
address book backed-up. Also Family Tree Maker.
I keep a back-up copy of it weekly. That way I only
loose a weeks entries. Sometimes, I back-up at the
end of any day that I have entered a lot of info.
Maybe now you won't have to hear me complain
any more.
Happy searching. Cousin Jim.
Cousins,
Found these also. We certainly had a lot of variations
in the spelling of the name. Cousin Jim

Cousins,
Got this from another mail list. I only looked around
for a few links, you don't get any records, and you will find
links to each state, each county telling you where to go for
records. The information seems to be up to date and
accurate. Also gives historical and/or genealogy societies.
Gives states charges for their records. I have a book with
almost the same info, but it has gone out of date long ago.
That is the problem with reference books.
Happy hunting, Cousin Jim

Hello everyone,
Diane Cooper sent this about Annie Clanin?
She came through Ellis Island in 1898. Her
residence was listed as Roscrea, in Ireland.
I found Roscrea is in County Tipperary.
I have these Clanins that I have no info on:
Passenger Lists: New York, 1820-1850
Clanin, Mary Age : 40 Country of Origin : Ireland
Family Number : 17293703 Ship Name : Princeton
Port of Departure : Liverpool Port of Arrival : New York
Arrival Date : Aug 14, 1850 Nat'l Archive Series No. : M237
Microfilm Number : 91
This is all I have been able to find on Mary. She may have
come over to marry someone, or gone who knows where.
From this we know there had to be Clanins in Ireland at
least from around 1850 to 1898. There just couldn't have been
very many. That is why I believe if we could look in the right
place, there still would be Clanins in Ireland today.

Also have these two:

Other Residents: Husband Thomas Lauhaw
I don't understand all of this, is Milhallauch M or F?
Guess we really need the 1910 census to look at.

I am at a loss with this one also. Is Wife's first
name 'Clanin'? Again need the Census to look at.
Anyone have any information?

Cousins, Found this at alt.genealogy in the
René wrote in message
> Just curious -- why do you think that Ancestral File is so

[This is why I say to be careful of what you find there. The
IGI is not all that accurate for the same reason. Anyone
can submit data without source info.]
[Answer from Richard]
One reason is the Ancestral File has a built-in fatal flaw: Anyone
can attach his or her GEDCOM to a person already in the file. This
is how my 4th great grandfather became the son of a man younger
than he. Someone thought he was the same person as another Henry
Pence and he wasn't. This error is common in the AF because too
many people assume that if the name and locale are the same then
it is the same person.
I had a question similar to yours last week and my memory was
fuzzy about details so I went to the Ancestral File and did a
search for Jacob Pence (the most common given name in the PENCE
family). If you search the AF for Jacob Pence in North America you
will find 105 listings (some for the same person). I checked out
the first 45 of these the other night.
Of those 45, for any Jacob Pence born before 1850 (and there are
only a few born later), I did not find a SINGLE entry that is
without a major error either in the entry for the person himself
or for his children or his parents.
I'll repeat: I did not find one entry for a Jacob Pence in the
Ancestral File that doesn't contain a major error for the person
himself or for his parents or children.
A "major error" would include such things as the wrong parents,
the wrong children, wrong wife, wrong date or places of birth or
death or marriage, etc. For example, the birth date for any given
Jacob might be that of another Jacob, etc. In general, "same name"
errors.
If you want to test me on this, go to the Ancestral File and do a
search for Jacob Pence (in the United States). Pick any 5 or 10 at
random and e-mail me with the details on the ones you select. I
can't guarantee that every one of those will have a major flaw,
but I'll bet four out of five will. (There are a few Jacobs in the
AF for which the only data is a marriage record - no parents, no
dates of birth or death and no children, only the wife and date
and place of marriage. No sense in selecting one of those because
that is all that anyone knows of them.)
This is my "all-time favorite" Ancestral File family:

I will state without any hesitation that this family never
existed.
There was a Jacob Pence who married a Barbara Kemp on the
date given in the AF (and that is the only thing correct in this
group sheet), but that marriage was in Washington County,
Maryland, not Rockingham County, Virginia. The Maryland couple
lived out their lives in Hagerstown and are buried there along
with some of their children - which include none of those in the
above list.
The names of these 11 children came from an 1805 deed in
Rockingham County, Virginia, and are the children of a Jacob Pence
(whose wife was Catherine Persinger) who died in Rockingham County
in February of 1800. Indeed, Jacob and Catherine did have children
with the names listed above. The problem is that the first of
these (George) was born in 1764 not 1791 (church record) and the
last (Charles) was born in 1786 not 1811 (also a church record).
Note in particular that the deed in which these children were
listed was dated 1805 and the younger children above were born
after that date! Whoever wrote the deed did a great job of
anticipating the posthumous children of Jacob!
The short answer to your question is this: For the PENCE family in
the U.S., the family I am most knowledgeable about, the Ancestral
File is so full of errors that I have written the LDS Family
History Department that it would be impossible to correct them
all. The only solution is to delete them and start over!
Regards,
Richard
Hello Cousins,
Goofing around, I found a site with Ann Goodale and her
ancestors.
Before you go to this site, there are some corrections to the
Clanin book, if you don't already have them. I had some incorrect
information on the wife of Thomas Milward and Daniel Pierce.
In the book on page 202, #31, she is listed as Anne Lowell.
Lowell should be changed to Goodale there and on pages 198,
and 203. Her birth date on pg 202 is probably wrong, and the
Source: (1) is wrong Delete it.
Look around this site, there is a lot of information listed for
her parents, grand parents. Check out Thomas Milward and
Daniel Pierce. Have fun.
