Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Cousin Jay,
Welcome to the CLANIN-L Mail List. I am the list owner and
will give what help I can. We have about 18 other Clanin cousins that
have subscribed to the list. Are you familiar with the workings of the
RootsWeb mail lists? To send messages to the group, send them to:
CLANIN-L(a)rootsweb.com and each member will receive a copy
as well as you receiving a copy.
We have no idea of where Benjamin Clanin came from. It is
supposed he is Scotch-Irish, but this is not proven. We have not been
able to assertain what the name might have been when he came to
the colonies. My family history, as well as several other descendants,
says that the name was McClanin, or such, and the Mc was dropped.
However, there were Clanins in England and Ireland so the name did
exhist in that form in Great Britain. A Mary Clanin immigrated to NY.
in 1820. This is all I know of her. We don't know when Benjamin
arrived in the colonies. We know he was born in 1741 but that is all
we know of his birth.
How farmiliar are you with the Clanin history?
Biggest question of all, is; How are you connected to the Clanin
family?

Hi again Cousins,
I didn't explore far enough in the RootsWeb Social
Security database. If you want to send for a copy of any
of the Social Security Death Benefits applications, just
click on "SS-5 Letter" under TOOLS, and a letter will
appear that you can fill in and print and send to the Social
Security Administration. For a fee of $7.00 you can get
a copy if the SS # is included. The letter contains all of
the information already. I understand it can take from
2 to 6 weeks for an answer. Most people have said
two weeks.
You will also find Clannin, McClanin, McClannin
and McClanning, maybe more I couldn't think of.
Cousin Jim
Hi Cousins,
You may already know about this site for finding
Social Socurity Death Benefits information. You can
leave postem notes for the benefit of other researchers.
I believe there are some 125 Clanin records. Of course,
if no death benefits were ever applied for, there probably
will not be any record here. Also, metaphone and soundex
as well as exact spelling can be searched. If you can't
find the record, try alternate spellings of the name. There
were mistakes made in the records.
Cousin Jim.

Virus Spreads in Tennis Star Guise
Updated 5:00 PM ET February 12, 2001
By ANICK JESDANUN, AP Internet Writer
NEW YORK (AP) - A computer virus pretending to be an
electronic photo of teen-age tennis star Anna Kournikova
overwhelmed e-mail servers throughout Europe and North
America on Monday.
The virus slowed down e-mail systems and forced
some companies to shut down their e-mail altogether while
they cleaned out the rogue program. Security experts said
the virus does not permanently damage computers.
Within a few hours, the virus had managed to spread
almost as rapidly as last May's "I Love You" virus, which
caused tens of millions of dollars in damages worldwide.
Anti-virus researchers expected more computer infections
during Tuesday's business day in Asia.
"Everybody and their brother and sister in law (are)
infected with this thing," said David Perry, director of public
education at Trend Micro Inc. "Last year, everybody wanted
to be loved. Apparently many people want to see a JPEG
(picture) of Anna Kournikova."
Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at
Sophos Anti-Virus Inc., said the virus writer skillfully
combined "the temptation of the teen-age tennis star
with the average fantasy of the guy who sits in front
of the computer terminal."
The virus is known as a worm because it can
automatically send copies of itself to everyone on a
recipient's address book. That could be thousands
of copies per person for a larger corporation.
It only spreads through Microsoft Outlook e-mail
software on Windows computers, although Macintosh
users and those using other e-mail programs can still
spread the virus manually.
Microsoft spokesman Adam Sohn said the
company had released a security update last June,
shortly after the "I Love You" virus spread using
similar techniques. That update generates a warning
anytime a computer program attempts to access
Outlook's address book.
The virus appears to have originated in Europe.
Mikko Hypponen, manager of anti-virus research
for F-Secure Corp., said the virus, if left alone, will try
to contact a Dutch Web site on Jan. 26, 2002.
The virus comes as an attachment named
"AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs" and carries the message
"Hi: Check This!" At least three subject lines have
been identified: "Here you have," "Here you go" and
"Here you are" - all followed by a smiley face.
Many anti-virus companies have developed
software updates to filter the new virus, and many
network administrators responded by configuring
e-mail servers to automatically reject the message.
A warning to Michican State University users
was typical: "If you receive such a message, please
DO NOT OPEN the attachment. Discard the
message immediately."
Vincent Weafer, director of the Symantec
Anti-Virus Research Center, partly attributed the
virus's spread to timing. "Close to Valentine's Day,
anything novel or different like this will get people's
attention more than normal," he said. "They are
expecting messages from friends, maybe pictures
of each other or cards. People lower their guards."

HI Clanin cousins
As I've been putting my tree together, I would like to add a record of
physical attributes and social accomplishments for as many of the clanins
that I can.
1. I'm particularly looking for things that run in families, like baldness,
obesity, medical conditions, odd shaped fingers, webbed toes, streaks in
hair, early graying of hair, birthmarks, mental illness, alcohol and drug
use, etc, you get the picture? I'd also like to have hair and eye color,
height and weight as adult if you have it.
2. Educational achievements, what sort of career, anything goes, housewife,
factory worker, artist, teacher, missionary, pilot, military, etc,
If you'd like to contribute please reply to me directly with your
information at
srooker(a)greenapple.com and please put genetics-clanin in the subject line.
Thanks for you interest!
My ancestors are:
1. Benjamin Clanin and Mary Harris
2. Samuel Clanin and Hannah Covel Thompson
3. Rubin CLanin and Mary Clevenger
