Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
This was sent to me from another list. Everyone beware of the
scams. I know this is long, but worth it if it will save you money.
Cousin, Jim
THE UPDATE FIRST
I'll begin here so those of you who already know about "Family Discovery"
(and their sister site, GenSeekers) can be on your merry way ....
A new letter from them is circulating now... one that promotes a service
that sounds like something that, as a genealogist, you're really afraid
to pass up (those records... all those records!). The newest message
will probably have a subject line of "Thanks for your help
Genealogist..."
Are you concerned that you'll be missing out by not signing up with
Family Discovery? Would you like to know what you're missing if you
don't get in on the "special offer"? Click on this link
<http://www.familydiscovery.com/members/>. It will take you directly
inside their site where you can walk around and have a really good
look.
Once done, please spread the word. Don't let other cousins, friends and
newbies get suckered by these scam artists.
I also want to let you know that Gene Olson has done some research and
found the following current list of sites related to Family Discovery in
one way or another: These are scams also.
genealogyfinders.comgenealogyfinders.netaboent.comfamilydiscovery.comgenseeker.comgenealogy-express.com
If these sites are anything like Family Discovery, hide your wallet,
checkbook, credit card, and run! :)
He has now set up a message board on his site for discussion of Family
Discovery and her sister sites. Want to find out more or comment about
the subject?... head for Gene's Anti Family Discovery site at
<http://www.compuright.net/familydiscovery/>.
FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT HEARD OF THIS SCAM.
Okay, so I did this backwards, the newest news first. However, please
know that the subject of Family Discovery is NOT new. To save time,
this is a copy and paste from the main portion of my message to everyone
on January 19th. It lays out the whole story. I post it here again just
for you if you have not heard of this scam...
"Family Discovery is just what I said in the last sentence... rip-offs."
This is becoming an old subject among those of us who have been doing
online genealogy for a while, but you need to be made aware...
Family Discovery links their pages to Rootsweb sites and archive pages,
GenWeb sites, and privately owned sites ... sites on which all the
information is already FREE! They are doing this without permission and
are currently under investigation.
Please, heed the warning. A new ad from them is going around telling
you that if you'll join by Friday, 2 Feb, you'll pay "a one time access
fee of ONLY $49.00 with absolutely nothing to pay EVER again..."
While I'm at it, I'd better warn you of their newest, sister site...
"GenSeeker", in case another message is floating around that I'm not aware
of as yet. Though I haven't heard any more about it from anyone (yet),
it's still a site owned by the same person(s) and building itself under
the same premise as Family Discovery. I've been to their newest site
and seen what they're up to. Instead of the "special rate" you're
charged $20 more. However, when clicking on their "freesearch link,"
the unwary customer is taken to the familydiscovery.com site.
GenSeeker describes itself as "the most comprehensive easy to use
collection of online records ever compiled." Of course it is, if they
link to every free website they can find! Save your money and do the
search yourself! You DO NOT need to pay for a service that is already
free if you know where to look. If you need assistance, send a message
to the list and state in the top line of your message that you're a
newbie needing help; you'll probably get more than you can handle! :)
Gene Olson has an Anti-FamilyDiscovery.com update list from his
website. He has been working to close down both sites and is still on
their trail. You newbies to online genealogy would be wise to go to his
site and read up on this company so you won't be ripped off. Click on
the following link and you'll be taken directly to his site:
<http://www.compuright.net/familydiscovery>. Gene's new email address
is < gene_olson(a)bigfoot.com >. His toll-free number is 1-877-319-9699.
I tried to access familydiscovery.com just a moment ago. It seems the
entire site is now password protected. Hmmm... I wonder why...
Gloria.
Hello Cousins,
I got this from a mail list for Darke Co. OH. Corinne
Hanna Diller is the author of this work. This is from the
list manager. Cousin Jim.
"Corinne is a wonderful genealogist who understands all
the ins and outs of inference. Many of us just shut down the
search for a certain ancestor when we encounter a lack
of easily obtained hard data but not Corinne! She knows
how to doggedly pursue difficult avenues. I suggest that you
all read her wonderful article on the PREPONDERANCE
OF EVIDENCE at:"

Dear Clanin clan,
I received 2 more rolls of microfilm from the Kansas Historical Society for the Jewell County Republican. The dates on the rolls are from 1/5/1894 to 12/25/1896 and 12/22/1938 to 1/22/1942. While looking through them I found a couple mentions of the Clanin name.
In the 9/21/1894 issue, under the Prairie Center news, it says "Mrs. E. Clanin will move to Asherville to spend the winter."
In the 8/9/1895 issue there is a Delinquent Tax List. In the Prairie township it list E Clanin and L G Clanin as being late on their taxes. They were not alone. The list was over 2 pages in an 8 page paper.
In the 3/20/1941 issue, under the 20 years ago section, it says "Avis Clanin made 17 points for Jewell in the basketball game with Burr Oak." **Obviously this would put the date of the game during the week of 3/20/1921.
I have these rolls for a few more days and plan to look at them some more. If anyone has something from these time frames that might be in this paper (even if it pertains to a line other that Clanin) please let me know and I will look for it. I requested these in September and they just arrived last Friday. I am trying to get as much from them as I can while I have them.
Shawn Trussell
Hi Jim and fellow Clanin cousins
In response to several queries now and in the past I will give what I have
in my files. I can't verify these dates as these are family group sheets
given to me by Wayne and Phyllis Clanin collection.
I don't have an Alpheny Clanin Married to Issac but there are some gaps that
I don't have filled in.I did find an Alphenia Clanin-notes follow.
I don't know of a Ross Nazarene Clanin, but wonder if same as my Ross Noah
Clanin?
Read on:
I have a Ross Noah Clanin b. 4 April 1878 Marion IN. d. 15 Dec 1958
Peoria,Ill. buried City Cemetery, Lowell IN.
I have a family group sheet that lists Ross as a child of Elizabeth Jane
Clanin(daughter of Ruben Clanin and Mary Clevenger)
Here it gets kinda foggy. On my files Elizabeth was Married to John J.
Hilligoss on 9 March 1865 ,
but Ross is listed with the Clanin surname. Not sure what to make of that,
Elizabeth could have married a Clanin cousin after John J. Hilligoss. . I
talked to my grandfather,Clifford Clanin and he said Ross Clanin was his
step-father and grandpa couldn't tell me anything about Ross except that he
was a "cousin" of his dad's and that he was a real nice man. He had been
married once before and had 2 daughters Minnie Clanin Wilson and Tillie
Clanin Paul, both of Hammond IN.
I have a copy of his obituary, but its not documented with date or which
newspaper its from.
Ross married 1. unknown in my files, could this be the Nellie Pearson? 2.
Mary Emma (BLACK) CLANIN(this is my gr-grandmother) married on 31 March 1948
in Peoria Ill.
Mary Emma Black was first married to George Washington Clanin my
Gr-Grandfather.
I also have a copy from Wayne Clanin files of a family history sheet that
lists Ross N. Clanin parents surnames as father - Clanin and Mother - Black,
no first names listed. Could be this was misinformation as His 2nd wife
maiden name was Black,.Doesn't give his first wifes name but does list his
daughters Tillie and Minnie, no dates for them. Ross death certifcate does
not list parents name either. Schmidt Funeral Parlors of East Peoria Ill,
obiturary record notice shows Ross Clanin parents surnames of F-Clanin
M-Black again no first names.( Again I believe this is incorrect) This
record also lists his occupation as a trackman for the New York Central
Railroad. Ross Clanin burial in City Cemetery Lowell, IN.
I also have a copy of a page from the 1880 Indiana census for Sims Twp,
(can't read the county name)But I believe thats Grant Co. IN.
that lists as one of the sons of Rubin(age 65) and Elizabeth(age 55) as
Rosco A. age 2..(which would give him a ca 1878 birthyear.
Also have family group sheet for Rubin and Mary(Clevinger) that lists all
the women he was married to and the dates, according to that one Rosco A.
b1878 would be the son of wife number 3-Elizabeth Gabriel.she was b.9 Nov
1824. married 31 Jan 1878, d. 13 March 1881.
This raises more questions than answers about Ross N. and Rosco A.
ISSAC CLANIN
Here are all the ISSAC Clanins from my files. Please note that I have
verified none of these dates/places.
For most of these listed I have all the children, but to save space I will
list only the Issacs
I have ISSAC Clanin son of Reubin Clanin and Mary Clevenger b. 1 Oct 1848.
d. 26 June 1854
also have an ISSAC Beckly Clanin b. 20 May 1817, died 15 Nov 1882 in Jewel
Co. Kansas. he was the son of Samuel Harris Clanin and Hannah Thompson.
These dates are from a xeroxed copy of what looks like pages from a family
bible-also from files of Wayne and Phyllis Clanin collection.
ISSAC Beckly Clanin Married Elizabeth Ann Littleton b. on 16 Dec 1841 and
they had 13 Children.
one of Issac Beckly Clanin and Elizabeth Littleton children was James
Monroe Clanin
James Monroe Clanin b. 7 Nov 1852 Ipava Ill, d. 28 Jan 1946 Perkins OK,
married (Fannie) Julia Frances Freeland on 5 Nov 1876 in Jewel Co. Kansas.
James and Fannie had 12 Children
Child # 2 Was Royal ISSAC b. 29 May 1878 in , Jewel Co. Kansas d. 26 July
1901 in Asherville KS. He never married.
I also have an ISSAC Morris Tidrick who is son of Susan Clanin and Morris
Tidrick who raised by his grandparents ISSAC Beckly Clanin and Elizabeth
Littleton

ISSAC Jasper Clanin b. ca 1849 in Fulton Ill. I don't have any further info
on this one.
Samuel P. Clanin b. 20 Sept 1821 d. 13 Feb 1900(son of Samuel Harris Clanin
and Hannah Thompson) married Susasnna Duffield on 17 Feb 1848. They had
Child # 4 ISSAC b. 16 March 1855 in Marion IN. Issac married Mary Jones on
22 Dec 1875, Grant Co. Indiana. (I have copy of marriage license) and
married 2nd Minnie L*unreadable last name*.
ALPHANY CLANIN?
I have an Alphenia Clanin b. 1844 Ohio, Daughter of Rubin Clanin and Mary
Clevenger marrried Francis M Deys on 16 Jan 1868. I don't have any children
listed for this marriage.
I also find her listed as a 6 year old daughter of Ruben and Mary
Cleben(Clanin) on the 1850 Census for Franklin twp, Wayne co. IN..
I also have an Alphemma Clanin b. 1824 Ohio, Daughter of Samuel Harris
Clanin and Hannah Thompson
I have her married to a William Hardacre in 1847.

CLAYTON b. abot 1897
I don't know what happend to Cliff and CLayton, no other info. other than my
grandfather was named for them Clifford Clayton Clanin. he was born 24 May
1912.
It seems to me that there was another Clifford Clanin who passed away in
Chicago Ill, in the 1970's, but I can't find that information. Jim do you
remeber. we compared ss#s of my grandfather Cliff and your Cliff to find we
had 2 differant Cliffords?
There also is a William Clifford Clanin son of George William Clanin my
grandfathers brother. Don't have much more on him.

Hi Gang,
Long time no talk. I have been somewhat busy trying to get
everything
together to get in The Sons of the American Revolution. Slow process just
getting the papers filled out. Also have been working my Calderwood and
Robeson lines in Darke Co. OH. and got the following question from one
of the list members. Does anyone know anything about these Clanins?
I have a Ross Clanin but nothing on him. Of course I have an Isaac but
not married to Alphany, don't even have her.
Jim.
Am interested in knowing about the Clanin surname and how much research
> you have done on that name. Reason I ask, is my Great-grandmother, Nellie
> (BOYD) Pearson, married her second husband, Ross CLANIN of Darke Co.
> Ohio. Not much is know about him except that his mother, Alphany Clanin,
> married her cousin, Isaac Clanin. Ross Nazarene Clanin was born in
> Marion, Indiana. Any connection to your line of CLANIN's?
