To the descendents of Samuel H. Clanin...I have recently that Samuel and
his wife, Hannah (Brown), are buried in the Mine La Motte cemetery in
Madison County, MO., along with some of their children as follows:
James, Laura E., Serena, and one other child designated as "Infant".
Serena' husband, James H. Feeney, is also buried there. One of his sons,
Justus, who was my grandfather, is buried in the Christian Cemetery in
Fredericktown, Madison Co., MO. Also buried there are his wife, Annie
(Farmer), his son, LaRoy, and my father Thomas Justus. The info about
Samuel was found in the cemetery records, and was copied as "Saul".
This was probably found in the records as "Saml", abbreviation for
Samuel.
There is an Emma Sarah Clanin who died in 1970 buried there, but I do
not know who she is. Perhaps someone of you will know.
Hope you find this information useful.

Hello Cousins,
Thought this might make everyone feel a little better knowing
that everyone has problems and how the census must be
taken with a grain of salt.
Enjoy, Jim

Hi, Cousins! My name is Velda Clanin Hovis, and I am a descendent of
John (Harris?), Samuel H., Justus, and Thomas Justus Clanin. At some
time prior to 1901, Samuel and Hannah (Brown) brought their family to
Missouri, and eventually settled in Madison County. That is where they
lived when Samuel died. My grandfather, Justus, was born in Palmyra, IL
in 1856 so they moved to MO after that. He married Annie Farmer from
Arkansas. Her father's name was James, but there are so many of them in
the Arkansas records that I have not been able to determine who is my
ancestor. If anybody can help, I would appreciate it.
I grew up in St. Francois County, MO, and have lived in St. Louis County
for the past 48 years. My husband and I have three children and eight
grandchildren.
Thanks to all who have contributed to his project, and especially to Jim
for getting it rolling.
Sorry Jim! I'm Claudia Henderson and I live in Portland, OR. My
connection to the Clanins is through my grandchildren's maternal line. They
are the 4th greatgrandchildren of Flora deRose CLANIN, the daughter ofAlfred
CLANIN and Leannah LITTLETON.
Flora was born in Ipava, IL12 April 1859; married Albin (Alvin) KING 28
Feb1877 in Jewell Co, KS. She died 14 Nov 1920 in Garden Home, OR. Garden
Home is now a suburb of Portland.
If anyone has any stories, pictures, etc they would be willing to share I
would really appreciate them (as would my little granddaughter). She's just
turned 8 but already is showing an interest in her ancestors, which I am
very thankful for!
Claudia

Velda,
Welcome to the Mail List. When you can find time, please
tell all the other subscribers about yourself and your connection

Claudia Henderson, you also have not introduced yourself

I admit I have not been a consistant researcher in recent years. I was

anything about.

Cousins,
Can anyone identify a Benjamin L. Clanin who purchased
land in Latah Co., Idaho in 1889.
Also, Joseph Clanin purchased land in Johnson Co., WY
in 1925.
Also, Lanson Clanin purchased land in Grant Co., WA.
in 1911.
Also, the Manley heirs of Clanin received a patent on land
in Grant Co., WA in 1911.
I have no information on any of these Clanins.
Jim
Cousins,
The Bureau of Land Management has revamped its
site and uploaded a nearly-complete database of its
holdings -- data related to all land grants in public land
states in the US. Most of the entries contain FREE
downloadable images of the original documents!
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/
At the bottom of page click on "Search". Select a State
or "All States" Enter Patentee Last Name and First Name.
Click Search.
For descendants of Samuel Clanin. it gives
Samuel Clanin in IL and 2 Samuel H. in MO. Click Details
In most cases, clicking on "Document Image" will bring
up the actual document which you can print.
If you just put Clanin in the Last Name, you will
get 10 returns. That is all the records they have for
the name Clanin. You can also send for a certified
copy if you need one. This system searches the name
as printed, so don't forget to try variations of the spelling.
Using Clannin brings up one for Isaac Clanin.
Good luck, Jim List Dad.
Hello Cousins,
I sent the "birth method" shown below the other day. Seems it
isn't perfect. However, this person picked a very simple example
to use. Any one day old should not be very difficult to figure its birth
date from the death date. Bad example. I used the "birth method"
on several persons who I had the birth/death dates from other
sources and their tombstone death date and age. They all worked.
However, if in doubt the last example always works, NOTE
that he borrowed a month from 05 months and borrowed 30 days:
[71 07 09 aged - Since the aged days is larger that the death days
borrow 1 month - which leaves month 4 (30 days) so you borrow
30 days] This is wrong, you are borrowing the 5th month which
has 31 days. April is the month left, you didn't borrow it.
Happy arithmetic. Jim.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This "method" turns up from time to time in genealogical publications;
I guess it will NEVER die (sigh...). In any event, the method is
deeply flawed and should NEVER be used to calculate birthdates! A
trivial example will demonstrate the most fundamental error built
into the method:
Suppose a child was born on February 28, 1995 and died one day later
(i.e. on March 1, 1995). Let's follow through the example given in
the original post, substituting this death date and age, and observe
the absurd answer the method provides.
How do you figure the birthdate? Suppose the
person died March 1, 1995, at the age of 1 day.
****Write the year, month, day as:->19950301
****Subtract the age at death:------->000001
****This gives the figure:--------->19950300
****Now subtract 8870:----------------->8870
****The result is:----------------->19951430
This produces the absurd result:
Year 1996, 14th month (!), 30th day.
