You mention military records, have you tried for a possible pension record.
They were not always kept together. There is much more informaiton in the
pension record anyway.
How about a deed? If the land belonged to John's father, at his death it
could have transferred to Sarah who could have transferred it to John. Or
the land may have gone direct to John, via a quit claim deed between John
and his father. Deeds are much over looked and under used.

The 1850 census shows John P. Boyd, age 22, born in TN.
He was living in the same house as Sarah Boyd, age 65, born in VA. I
haven't been able to find out anymore about her either. I checked for a
record in Washington DC,and found that he was in the Civil War, but
records had been lost. That was a big disappointment, as sometimes
show who the parents are.
