Because of religious differences and persecutions in
Scotland, from 1664 to 1668 many people called "Covenanters" left
Scotland emigrating to the northern part of Ireland where many of
there countrymen had gone years before. They were known as "Seeders"
and "Scotch-Irish". Among them were families of Boyd's.
In the "History of the Boyd family" by William Boyd written
in 1884, he states that 3 brothers of one Boyd family came to New
York in 1775 at the time of the Stuart Dynasty in Scotland. One went
to orange, New York, one went to Albany and the other to Orange Co.
and later to Pennsylvania.
Elisabeth Boyd Frisbey, granddaughter of James Boyd I, our
first known ancestor, related the same information that of her
ancestors three brothers had run away from Ireland and came to
America. The brothers got separated and as the county was now, travel
limited, communication not easy the brothers and their families lost
track of each other.
She never mentioned and probably did not know the names of
the three brothers, nor how far in lineage was her grandfather but he
was known as "Scotch-Irish". Also her father always said he was
"Scotch-Irish" and this was tradition in his children's family
Hence James Boyd 1 became our first know ancestor, but is no
doubt related to the other Boyd families mentioned in other records.
James Boyd 1 lived in Somerset Co. Greenville Tp. Pa. James
II(our line) went from
Somerset to Ohio and later to Indiana, settling in Noble and LaGrange
counties. Most of them belonged to the Church of the brethren.
Hope this helps some one
