Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I am looking for others who are searching for BOYDs from Somerset County, PA (and perhaps neighboring Bedford County). I do not have much at this time, but I want to start making connections with other researchers to compare notes and keep in touch (in case we can ever help each other). I have already posted my BOYD query to this list, but no luck so far. You can see my BOYDs (and the other 4000 relatives) on my web page: www.my-ged.com/boyd. Unfortunately, the line I desire to know the most about -- my namesake -- is the one I probably know the least about.
Also, if anyone can help direct me (a novice genealogist) to the proper source(s) for obtaining birth, death, and marriage records for Pennsylvania, I would appreciat hearing from you. I'm still learning....
This is to let you know that as I am replacing my 7 year old PC. For the
last 2 weeks I have been trying to downmlaod the 430 Emails I have waiting
for action. But as quickly as I would clear them new messages would
appear. So after 2 weeks I am only down to 230 Emails, I have decided that
I need to unscrible for a week. I hope to rescrible on Monday 9 August.
In this process of clearing my "old PC" I will send some mail directly to
people who I think I might be able to assist - could I ask that you not
reply until after 9 August please.
Does anyone have an Email address for Vera B. Metz of Twin Falls, Idaho.
If so please email me. I have some genealogical data for her which I will
via snail mail if she is not on line.

Thought some of you might like the write-up which appeared in a Scottish
Dean Castle and Country Park, Ayrshire.Located on the edge of Kilmarnock,
Dean Castle is a well preserved 14th century keep with a 15th century palace
block with a tower and curtain wallenclosing a courtyard. The adjoining
three-storey house dates from the 17th century. In the 14th century, it was
held by the Balliols but Robert the
Bruce gave it to the Boyds. Robert Boyd was guardian of James III in the 15th
century. The castle deteriorated in the 18th century but was restored in 1905
using stone from Balconie Castle and now looks in good condition despite its
age. There is a museum with a collection of armour and musical instruments.
The castle and grounds were donated to the town of Kilmarnock in 1975 and
there is now a pleasant country park with a children's corner and collections
of farm animals and rare breeds. The park is a favourite with the locals in
spring time when it has a mass of daffodils. There is
a visitor centre and cafeteria.

I am looking for information about Andrew Boyd married Hannah Rankin in
Harrison County, Kentucky in 1815. I have the following reference in
addition to the marriage listing in IGI and Kentucky Early Marriages:
THOMAS RANKIN was a citizen of Harrison County, Ky., and came from Virginia
in the early settlement of Kentucky. He was the father of eleven children:
Simeon, John, David, Robert, James, Thomas, Jane (Dawson), William,
Samuel, Sarah (Chambers) and Hannah (Boyd). Thomas Rankin was the first
constable in Harrison County, died and is buried in Cynthiana, Ky.
This is from "Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin,
7th ed., 1887,
These families may have come from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.
Yesterday I posted to the group - in 3 parts - an outline of this family.
To day when I was compleating another project I might have found William
the Grandson (T1) in the DAR datebase Patroit list:-
William: b 1733 PA d 5-17-1808 PA m Gennet Brisban Pvt PA
His date of death is the same, although his wife's Christen name is spelt
differnently. So if you think that Ch 4/220 might be part of your family,
this DAR database would be useful to look at as well. (And if you do could
you send me a copy of what you find so that I can include it with the
remainder of this chapter please)

As the first step in trying to link other researchers to the family of
George Boyd (1691-1731) and Isabella of Lancaster Co, PA and formerly of
Co. Antrim, Ireland and formerly of Scotland - ch 5/266 of Clan Boyd of
Scotland - I will list the place names in the Slaymaker Papers - Boyd
Estate 1725-1855. This I hope will allow other researchers to express an
interest if their family was in the same location. When I complete this
list of names, I will go through my records to see if can't find any
possible matches with their family and those recorded in Ch 5/266 going
through and finding other researchers has taken longer than I initially
thought. Below are some possible links which I will send out for now and
hope to complete the rest early next week

LIST OF PEOPLE RESEARCHING THE NAME BOYD
Group I realise that it is summer in the northern hemisphere and most
people would like to be out in the sun before the first winter snow might
come along but could I suggest that on your next visit to your local
"family centre or Society" that you spend the first 10 or 15 minutes
looking to see what information these is on Boyd researchers (and the 5 or
6 other spelling variations) in your Society's "members interest
No one can look at all such registers or reference books throughout the
World (even with access to the internet) but as individuals we can
contribute to expanding the knowledge of those who are looking for Boyd
ancestors. This is a project which we as individuals we can contribute to
the common good of the whole Clan. While the names you have found may have
nothing to do with your own Boyd family it MIGHT help someone else to find
a follow researcher (or their family) whom they can exchange information
with and if enough people do post the researchers from their own Societies
then it will help your own research. Which is one of the main purposes of
this group - of being able to share information on Boyd families.
For over a decade I have maintained a list of people I have found through
various sources (which are listed below) who were also researching the name
Boyd. So in 1993 then I was compiling Volume 1 of the Second Edition of
Clan Boyd of Scotland I included these people as appendix 10. This is now
some 78 pages (or about 85k file) and would contain about 1000 names. I
have others in my letter files which I have not had time to add to this
list, as well the last 4 issues of Genealogical Research Directory have not
been included either. Some of you with whom I have corresponded with over
the years would have already benefited from the information on this list.
The list is compiled by the country of the researchers address and NOT the
country in which they are trying to conduct their research.
The Countries that I have researchers from are:-
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
The details I would like to include here are :-
NAME OF RESEARCHER;
EARLIEST KNOWN DATE;
EARLIEST KNOWN LOCATION;
EARLIEST KNOWN NAME; AND
SOURCE OF INFORMATION
Where I have information included as a Chapter in Clan Boyd of Scotland, I
have placed Ch and the chapter number after the notation. Such as:-
Mr M J Boyd
32 Wadley Street
BRISBANE QLD 4109
(1826+, Turramura, Sydney NSW; pre 1792 Killarney, Co Kerry, Ire - James &
Ann (nee Nester) Boyd) T; (pre 1840, Dunkinelly, Co. Donegal, Ire) V;
(1200+, Worldwide) AG (Ch 94); (Ch 83)
In recent years I have not kept this list as up to date as I might have as
I have been occupied with other projects and I have been able to use my
ISYS program to find locations when I see locations given.
This could be another source to help newer researcher (as well as older
[not in age] researcher who have moved to a new location with their family)
find possible family members. When we move from one area that we have been
researching to a new location with "our family" to a new "area/location" we
have to start all over again to find out what sources there are and who
else might be researching their Boyd family in that area. This list will
help you to more easily build the new network you had for your "old area".
COULD I ASK THOSE WHO ARE MEMBERS OF GENEALOGICAL GROUP'S OR FAMILY HISTORY
GROUP'S if they could look to see if they have members "registers" or some
other publications that might list Boyd researchers in them and forward
them to me. Ideally I would like to be able to include the information in
the above format. While those who have their "own network" of contacts -
either on the Net or not - might like to tell the rest of the group who
they are and what they are researching.
I expect that this list would supplement the information that is maintained
by Cal Bod, the House of Boyd Society's Genealogist and include a wider
group of people to the benefit of those who are researching the name Boyd
and its variations.
Another use for this list would be to find out if there are other Boyd
researchers in your Town, City, County, District or State whom you could
contact to discuss some problems with your Boyd research. I would be happy
to send country sections or the whole file to members directly if they
wanted to establish a contact group in their area or a general Clan Boyd
Research Group in their location.
The one disadvantage with this list is that it does not tell you WHAT BOYD
FAMILIES THERE ARE in an area. Perhaps this is one of the tasks that such
a location Research Group might undertake.
Below are some of the sources I used to compile this list and there would
be many more that I could never get access to.

I am sure that members of the group have a lot of other sources that could
be added to this list.
So while it not be a task for this coming weekend, I would ask ALL MEMBERS
of the group that they put it on their to do list of jobs please and post
their findings to the Group or to me directly as some as possible.
Those members who have family from PA, or even those areas around it, may
find it useful to look at:-
Charles Knowes Bolton, in his Scotch Irish Pioneers in Ulster and America,
lists in an appendix names and hometowns of various Ulstermen taken from
presbytery and synod records:
This MIGHT HELP those Boyd families, especially those who might have been
Presbyterian, to find out where in Ireland their family came from.
Perhaps if some one can find this book they might like to post the Appendix
and its names for the benefit of teh remainder of the Group.
