>To Linda: I am working on Clampitt genealogy but do not know of any
Clamps. I suspect that many may have shortened their name when coming into
the country. I was told that my dad's family was spelled O'Briant instead
of O'Brian because when they came into port in US in old days the Catholic
people put a cross in the front of their name to denote catholocism. So the
Protestant O'Brians not to be outdone put a cross at the end to denote
Protestant. My guess is that the Clampitts who were Quaker and or
Protestant put the cross at the end although their original name may have
been Clam. Just a guess. One book in our library says that the origin of
the name Clamp is that blacksmiths who made horseshoes sometimes made clamps
and some of them were so good at it that it became a specialty so they they
wanted to come to America they used the name of they specialty. Another
person says that Clampitt comes from Clay pit.
> Now Linda: My interest in Clampitts is that I am doing a clampitt
genealogy; however, here you have another name attached with yours and that
is of more interest to me. I will write you another note and tell you my
other genealogies I am Mary Clampitt, 7114 Edgevale Street, Chevy Chase Md

Dear Linda: Interested as I am in Clamps and Clampitts I am more interested in the Jamesons, especially the ones who were in NC, SC and my branch in New Hope Community, Kosciusko, Attala Co, Mississippi. The O'Briants (my maiden name) intermarried with the Jamesons. Indeed they are all mostly buried in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.... Let me know if you have genealogy on Jamesons. Mary Clampitt (my married name) clam7114(a)gateway.net

I am new to this list but am anxious to find if anyone has seen a connection
between the Clamp and Clampitt families. My gggrandfather, William Jacob
Clamp, is from Lexington, South Carolina, but I am not limiting myself to
this area.
Thank you,
Elma Clamp
