My great-great grandmother was Arminta Clear/Clair married George Allan Bates around Kentucky/West Virginia. I'm almost positive that her parents were James Clear and Tabitha Rose. James and Tabitha moved to Pikeville, Kentucky which is where Arminta was born. I found them on a census just a few years before here birth. I am not sure who James and Tabitha's parents are though.
I have found a lot of info on the Clears in Smyth County, trying to make the connection. I will send you what I have. You can email me at webmaster(a)easternwoodlandindian.com
Thanks,
Rebecca Frazer

Just a question.....where did Benjamin settle?
My line of Clairs goes back to at least the late 1700s in Southern New
Jersey.
Perhaps we intersect somewhere along the line.
I have piles of information if it can be of any help to you...some from my
own research and family archives and much more from my cousin Kathleen Clair
(86 and a most extraordinary woman) of NYC.
