Hello Alecia, Maudie and Darlene,
I think that Darlene's records are correct. I have been through several census records and I am unable to locate a Sam Clair or Lula Creech. I believe that the person providing information for Wm Leander's death certificate had it wrong. The death date is correct. And, my mother, Ellen Tomlinson b. 1929, d. Novermber 23, 2003 (daughter of Lucinda, daughter of William Leander Clair, told me that her grandpa was thrown from a horse when Dr Clair was treating a patient. The resulting injuries caused his demise. She also told me that her grandfather was also a preacher.
I believe as does Darlene, that Wm Leander was the son of William T Clear and Hannah Asbury. (Darlene and I have copies of the marriage certificate from Smyth Co, VA ceremony). The 1850 and 1860 Morgan County, KYCensus records appear to firm up that theory:
1850 Morgan County, KY Census
# 775
William T. Clearer 24 Va [black smith]
Hannah 22 Va
Ellen 6 "
Susan 3
JOHN R. CLEARER 21 Va
1860 Morgan County Census West Liberty PO
442
William Clear 34 Blacksmith
Hannah 33
Columbia 16
Susan 12
Leander 10
Mitchell 8
? ?
America 2
These records as well as the 1880 Wolfe Co, KY census seem to firm up this hypothesis based on the continuation of family names.
1880 KY Census Precinct 6, Wolfe, Kentucky
Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
William L. CLAIR Self M Male W 29 KY Farmer VA VA
Sarah E. CLAIR Wife M Female W 28 VA Keeping House TN VA
America CLAIR Dau S Female W 9 KY KY VA
William T. CLAIR Son S Male W 6 KY KY VA
Hanah A. CLAIR Dau S Female W 5 KY KY VA
Toy M. CLAIR Dau S Female W 2 KY KY VA
My mother, Ellen could have been named after Leander's sister Ellen. There is a Mitchell Clair still living in Breathitt Co, KY. Note the names Hannah (Hanah) and America in 1860 and the names are given to William Leander's children in the 1880 census.
Taking this same thoery would indicate that William T Clear (Leander's father) could be relayed to John and Henry Clair in the 1850 Smyth Co records. Wm states in the 1880 census that he was born in VA-.
If you are able to refute or confirm any information, please let me and Darlene know.
Texas Cousin,
Bill Jacobs

Darlene, I forgot to add this. There has always been a very close association with my mother's family and the Creeches in this part of the country. I once heard her say we were distant cousins. So don't throw out Lula just yet. Let me check on that also. For everyone else out there, I'm still looking for info on Lillie Taylor, married to Henry Clair, remarried to Carl Mullins after Henry's death, had a brother named Scott Taylor.

For what it's worth, my mother says the original family name was St. Clair, although she won't deny the possiblity of Sinclair being used. She has always believed the name was changed only a generation or two prior to my grandfather. Let me check with her again and see if she can me give any more information. I'll let you know what I come up with.

Hi Maudie and Alecia,
I'm adding my gang to the list here, with my great-grandfather William T. Clair being brother to John and Henry. Although I have a death certificate that lists William Leander Clair's parents as Sam Clair and Lula Creech, something about that doesn't ring true. Another possibility for his parents is William T. Clear and Hannah Asbury, with this information being provided by a cousin who was told by his grandmother.

My great-grandfather was one of his sons. His name was Henry Clair. Henry married Lillie Taylor, date unknown, they moved to Perry County. Henry was a carpenter and a preacher. He had two sons (Woodroe & Mitchell) and three daughters (Stella, Mabel, and Christine).
