William Milton Clair apparently claimed 18 May 1848 as his birth date, but being certain about this whole mess is a very tricky matter. Keep in mind that his parents, Z.J. and Delila (Hinkle/Feagins) Clair, were not married until 12 February 1853, so their first children were born before they were married no matter how you look at it. We know from Marion County, Iowa, divorce records that Delila and Z.J. were engaged in an adulterous relationship as early as 1849, but when that relationship began is wide open. There also exists the possibility that William Milton actually was Delila's child by her first husband, Leonard Feagins. You may have heard the Clair family story, told to me by David Hammer, that Z.J. traded his rifle to Leonard in return for Delila and William. It obviously was far more complicated than that, but it's a good story nonetheless. I've not found Z.J. and Delila in the 1850 census (goodness only knows where they were), but have located them in all subsequ!
ent years. The 1850 census, could we find that record, would bring us closer to an answer. Unfortunately, the parties involved may have taken the truth about these matters to their graves with them. Hope I've not muddied the water here ...

My family (Kimmel) is from William and Martha Clair's second child Emma. We have John Henry as the third child. I have Wm's birth year as 1850 not 1848. Do you have documentaion for that year?
