Let me try this again. I was trying to correct the post of Mary Jean Zimmerman posted Aug 2005. However, my posting didn't appear under hers.

Just a slight correction. It should be James A Claiborne, not John A. I know that this is just a typo, but I wanted to make the change so there is no confusion. James A Claiborne married Fanny Claiborne.

Dorman rarely goofs and perhaps you should follow his excellent footnotes for support of his work. These Claiborne genealogies can be confusing without reading the actual deeds etc., or the reference sources offered.
1. Devereaux Jarrett Claiborne (1785-1871) had 5 wives. His first wife,Sallie W. Jones, bore him a son named after him in 1810 and Algernon Sidney in 1813. In 1816 his son D.J.(Jr) died and from all reports his first wife Sallie as well. He secondly married Harriet Edmunds in May 1817 who produced three daughters and died by 1825. Thus Algernon by age 12 would have lost his mother and step mother and his father would be remarrying again. Devereaux remarried the third time in 1825 to Martha S Jones (his first wife's half sister) and his brother George Ravencroft Claiborne took Algernon to care for him and to Tennessee. In 1837 DJ gave Algernon (now age 24) land in Tenn (see Brunswick Co Deed as referenced by Dorman...to my son etc); in 1847 DJ gave his son slaves (Gibson Co Tenn Deed book.) In 1816 Algernon is mentioned in his grandfather Benjamin Jones will (Greenville Co Va) and in 1827 his uncle Benjamin B. Jones will also in Greenville Co VA. Devereau J. married the fo!
urth time Martha Ann LEWIS and the fifth time to Sallie Ann Walker Taylor. A very interesting character he was indeed, my third great grandfather and from all the records clearly Algernon Sidney was his son. You have to look beyond census records.
2. George R. Claiborne b. 1782 (brother of Devereaux Jarrett Claiborne b. 1785) had a son he named Devereux Jarret who was born in 1806. This son went with them to Tenn and returned to VA and at age 25 married on 2 May 1831 Mariah LEWIS (aka Maria Nicholas Lewis)in Brunswick Co Va.(see Brunswick Co Marriages by Vogt & Kethley or the actual court records) You will find records in Brunswick Co for DJ, Jr and DJ, Senior. During that time Jr and Senior were used to identify the older and younger, not necessarily father and son.
So to recap:
1. Devereaux Jarrett Claiborne (brother of George R. Claiborne) had a son DJ Claiborne Jr who died in 1816 AND a son named Algernon Sidney Claiborne.
2. George R. Claiborne (brother of the above) had a son named Devereaux Jarrett Claiborne b. 1806 sometimes known as D.J. Claiborne, Jr.
I rarely spend time doing this any more so hope this helps.

FYI there is another John Claiborne in Brunswick. He is son of Richard
Claiborne and Mary Hamlin and was born about 1760 in Lunenburg or Amelia Co.
VA. He married Susannah Stokes whose father, Sylvanus Stokes, died in 1778
in Brunswick. John was named guardian of one of Susannah's siblings. By
1788 he is living in Franklin Co., NC where a deed shows he is selling 100
acres in Brunswick to his brother-in-law Thomas Stokes. Their children were
(1) Sarah who married John Evans, (2) Henry who married Mariah, (3)
Dandridge, and (4) Nancy who married Benjamin Goodrich. I am descended from
John Evans and Sarah Claiborne, but would love to learn about her siblings
Henry, Dandridge, and Nancy.
