William Harris father-in-law, William Overton had
large land grants received from head rights for
transporting immigrants to Va. William Overton son of
Col Robert Overton of England b 1609 distinguished
himself in battle of "Marston Moor", Gov of Hull 1647;
accompanied Cromwell to Scotland 1650, and commanded a
brigade at Battle of Dunbar; Gov of Edinburg; scholar
and soldier; intimate friend of Milton, who celebrated
his exploits on the "Defensio Secunda." See dictionary
of National Biography.
The very early home to the Harris family, William
Harris and his wife, Temperance Overton was called
Cedar Hill. It was a 1 1/2 story house, said to have
been log cabin with frame on the inside. This house
was in good shape until the 1980's when Kings Dominion
amusement park bought the land and destroyed the
house. The house was set on fire and burned for the
fire department to practice fire fighting.
Cedar Hill Cem. is an ancient cemetery in good
condition and is being maintained. It is believed to
be the oldest cemetery in Hanover County, since it
contains the oldest known grave in the county, the
grave of Temperance Overton Harris. The cemetery is
located in a mature forest with huge hardwoods. This
ancient cemetery is believed to be the largest private
family cemetery in the State of Virginia."

I received my response from the Va. Historical Society, who I might add are
always so helpful. In light of this it appears I will still need to see the
original records, which have been filmed by the FHL, however it makes one
wonder. Was there really a William Claiborne who married an Anne and produced a
son named Thomas Augustus?
The VHS response:
I have attached the information that you requested about Thomas Augustine
Claiborne, taken from Register of Albemarle Parish, Surry and Sussex Counties,
1739-1778. Charles Augustine Claiborne was not listed in the index.
Thos. Augustus s of Wm Claiborne and w Anne; b. Feb 10, c. March 1777;
gdpts. Augustine Claiborne, Wm. Leigh, Hannah Claiborn
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------
According to Dorman's well documented conclusions:
William Claiborne who was son of Nathaniel Claiborne (d. 1740) married Mary
Leigh (d. 1782)first and Francis Blair Black second in 1783. Mary Leigh's
father was Ferdinando Leigh who died in 1779 with a will which included his
son William Leigh.(Godparent #2)
Augustine Claiborne was brother to Nathaniel and when Nathaniel died, he
raised his son William Claiborne(per Dorman). So God parent #1.
Burnell Claiborne per Dorman married a Hannah Ravenscroft; he was son of
Leonard Claiborne who was a brother to Augustine and Nathaniel Claiborne. So it
is assumed that the Hannah Claiborne (Godparent #3) is Burnell's wife.
However, Leonard, Augustine and Nathaniel all sons of Thomas and Anne Fox
Claiborne also had a brother named "Billy". Is it possible that this
Billy/William married a woman named Anne? According to Dorman this "Billy" is to have
died before 1750. I have not been able to find a William Claiborne with a
wife named Anne.
Any ideas? Could the parish cleric have made the written mistake?

Am looking for Mattie Claiborne (et. al.) and her children Hazel and Mina. Mina is my g-grandmother. I believe Mattie was born in MO @ 1866-7. Need her husband who was deceased during the 1930 census where Mattie appears as (Claborn[s]). Her father is claimed to have been born in SC and her mother in IN. Anything would help. Also she may have had a son or brother names Lloyd or Floyd.
While researching records to determine the name of the wife of Burnell
Claiborne I have viewed many sources. In the event others make this pursuit, I
offer the following on my particular family quest. I might add..."what is
wrong with this picture?"
#1) W & M Quarterly Vol 14 - No 1-Albemarle Parish Records:
Charles Augustine, son of Wm. Claiborne and Mary his wife, born February,
1777. Godfathers: Augustine Claiborne and William Leigh. Godmother: Hannah
claiborn.(no Thomas Augustine mentioned in this report)
#2)BIRTH DEATHS AND SPONSORS 1717-1775 FROM ALBEMARLE PARISH REGISTER OF
SURRY AND SUSSEX COUNTIES VIRGINIA - John Bennett Boddie-Wm. and Mary
Claibourne-Thos. Augustine, 2/10/77, Aug. Clairbourne, Wm. Leigh, Mary Clairbourne (no
Charles Augustine listed in this report-note godmother)
#3)"Register of Albemarle Parish Surry & Sussex Counties 1739-1778."
Richards, Gertrude --Thos. Augustine s of Wm. Claibourne and w. Anne, b. Feb 10, c.
March 1777 gdpts. Augustine Claiborne, Wm. Leigh, Hannah Claiborn (sic) (no
Charles Augustine listed in this report - note mother's name)
#4)"Claiborne of Virginia, Descendants of Colonel William Claiborne " Dorman
& Smith
-.Family of BURNELL CLAIBORNE 5th Gen. page:
"His widow apparently survived many years. Hannah Claiborne was godmother
of Thomas Augustine Claiborne in March 1777".ref. (8) Albemarle Parish
Register
- . Family of WILLIAM CLAIBORNE - 5th Gen wife Mary Leigh, married 1770
issue:
1, Ferdinand Leigh
2. William Charles Cole
3. Nathaniel Herbert
4. THOMAS AUGUSTINE was born Feb 10, 1777 -ref(66)Albemarle Parish
Register.
5. Charles Augustine b. Feb. 1777 (nothing more is mentioned on this
individual) ref (17)Albemarle Parish Register, His godparents were Augustine
Claiborne, William Leigh and Hannah Claiborne
6. Mary Leigh
(Note that he does not mention the godparents of Thomas Augustine but once -
note the mother's name is Mary also that he has "covered all bases")
The question: Was there both a Charles Augustine AND a Thomas Augustine
Claiborne born in Feb. of 1777 to the same parents? Was there a William and ANN
C. who had a child in 1777? Was Hannah Claiborne godmother to both if there
were two?
Comments: From all the above it is clear the definitive answer must lie
within the viewing of the actual records. They are owned by the VA Historical
Society and I have contacted them. Dorman's work, tho confusing here, is
really a great genealogical work and has great references, most of which I have
checked and are accurate. Hopefully this will help others in their work and
remind them that there are many errors in printed works as well as some of the
original records. However, one must follow the original records....
When I get the copy of the original record, I will post it on this site.
Your comments are welcomed.
