Karen:
You might want to look at the Batte cards for Phillip, George R and such:
Go to the LVA site; then the Private papers & etc; then to R. Bolling Batte;
Go to Claiborne, H. then these cards:
# 53 & 54 - John Gregory Claiborne - wills etc are on those card
Claiborne, M
#42 & 43 - 43 has the Blandford Tomstone info on Mary Elizabeth d/o Phil
__________
Phillip: I think I sent you the card for him it has abstract of his will
etc. In that abstract Martha was not mentioned. It is not a given, that all
children will be mentioned in the will and if Martha had married by 1818 it is
likely the reason she wasn't mentioned. His cards: Claiborn, M - #73, 74, and
75. The death of Phillip's second wife is in the Henley obits..."Richmond whip
and public advertiser"
__________
George R: Under Claiborne, A Cards #139,140

Karen:
Thank you, thank you as you can see from available sources all these Johns
etc Claibornes can get confusing. My assumptions were correct, sigh, and again
I have found errors from various LVA site papers. Not the fault of the
Library of Va by the way. I do not have the letter and I tried to figure out who
donated it but could not.
To recap and can you answer any of my?s:
Phillip Claiborne (b. 1773 d. 1827) Brunswick Co Va, 1st son of Thomas and
Mary Clayton Claiborne - Married 1st Sallie Simms 2nd Eliz. Wilkes (widow of
Burwell Wilkes) - Phil and Sally had these children:
1. Mary Elizabeth b. 1805 d. 1889 m. as 2nd wife of John Gregory Claiborne
(aft 1850)
2. Lucy Simms Claiborne b.1804 d. 1844 never married; buried in Charlie's Hope
3. John C(?what does the C stand for) Claiborne b. 1808 d. 1844 Yazoo MS.
John married Caroline Worthington in Brunswick Co in 1832. She died 1842
in MS
Children: 1. Fanny Elija Claiborne (b.abt 1832 ? d. ?m. James A. Claiborne
s/o George R.
2. Virginia Claiborne (b. 1841)m. Archie Speights in 1857 in
Ark. she died in Greenville,SC.
3. John C. Claiborne (b?) m. Ophlie Napier in 1857 in
Independence Ark.
John Clayton Claiborne b. 1814 d. 1891 s/o George Ravenscroft Claiborne and
Anna Robinson. John Clayton Claiborne married Mary Green in Tenn in 1843. Had
one son named George Archibald Claiborne. John Clayton Claiborne was in
Gibson Co. Tenn then Iszard Co. Ark and was living in Fulton Co. Ark. in 1880. Was
John Clayton Claiborne born in Tennessee? Did he write the letter referenced
in LVA 40333? It lists him in Mecklenburg Co Va...so if it were he..he was
probably going to school there perhaps Randolph Macon. The time period was
1836. Do you know if he lived at any time with his Uncle Phillip Claiborne? The
census records for Phil shows an extra male in the household in 1810 and two in
1820.
George R. Claiborne questions:
1. Marriage to Anna Robinson in Warrenton, Warren Cty NC in 1803.
2. George Claiborne is listed on the tax list of Warren Co NC in 1811.
3. When did he go to Tenn?
4. He had a son named Devereux Jarrat Claiborne(aka Jr) b. 1808. Was he born
in NC or VA or Tenn? Did he stay with his Uncle Phillip? I know he was in
Brunswick Co in the 1840, 1850, 1860 & 1870 census records.
Enough for now. Hope you can answer some of my questions and sure appreciate
your response. I am posting all this to the list for those who may come in
the future looking for these families.
Regards, Mary Jean
In working on my Claiborne family, I am having difficulty determining the
children of the two named in the subject AND what happened to them. Have
collected deeds, will abstracts of Phillip, LVA material but am really confused about
their sons. Phillip Claiborne (1773-1827) had son John C. Claiborne. Did
George R. Claiborne also had a son named John C. Claiborne? In Phillip's will
of 1827 he gifts to son John who is not yet 21 years of age. John Clayton
Claiborne is mentioned in several records.
FIRST JOHN:
I have that Carolyn/Caroline Worthington married John C. Claiborne (1808/9 -
1843) and was the son of Phillip. This John in some records went to Tenn and
then to MS.
Records:
John C. Claiborne was born in Virginia ca. 1808. He was the son of Philip
Claiborne (1773-1827) and Sallie Sims. He married 1) Caroline Worthington in
Brunswick County in 1832. She died on 11 January 1842 in Holmes County,
Mississippi. They had a daughter named Fanny.(?)

SECOND JOHN:
John C. Claiborne (1814-1891) son of George R. Claiborne (1782-1838)
. Marriages of Tenn and family information- Source Ancestry.com:
John Clayton Claiborne was born 1813 and died 1891. He married Mary Ann
Green 21 February 1843 in Lauderdale Co Tenn. (formed from Tipton Co) They had a
son named George Archibald Claiborne born on 20 July 1845.
From the LVA-call # 40333 - re John C. Claiborne: ???? This is a letter
written by John C. Claiborne in Mecklenburg Co. to cousin Richard B. Robinson in
Brunswick. the history on this John is included:
Claiborne moved to Tennessee and settled in Gibson County where he was an
attorney. He was also Clerk and Master of the Chancery Court from 1840 to 1846.
He married 2) Mary A. [?] but is not clear where or when. A son, George
Archibald Claiborne, was born in Tennessee in 1845. The family then moved to Izard
County, Arkansas. John C. Claiborne founded the Commercial Standard in
Batesville in 1852, but sold it the following year. The family was living in
Batesville, Fulton County, Arkansas in 1880 where he continued to practice law. ??? This
same article says he was the son of Phillip Claiborne of Brunswick and born
in 1814. Arkansas Land Records list a John C. Claiborne in April of 1898
purchasing 40 acres of land in Batesville.
Can anyone please help me straighten out these two Johns? Are those citations
related to the correct John?
Thank you,
Mary Jean Z
