Harry Claiborne, a federal judge who was impeached after his conviction for filing false tax returns, has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 86. Mr. Claiborne, who had cancer and other ailments, committed suicide Monday at his Las Vegas home, the Clark County coroner ' s office said.
Before his appointment to the bench, Mr. Claiborne was considered one of Nevada ' s top defense lawyers, representing many prominent people with ties to Las Vegas.
Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin hired him for casino licensing matters. Judy Garland and one of Errol Flynn ' s wives went to him for divorces. He also represented mobster Bugsy Siegel. Mr. Claiborne was one of seven federal officials in U.S. history to be removed from office through impeachment, Senate Historical Office records show. He failed to report more than $107,000 on his 1979 and 1980 federal income tax returns money he earned as a lawyer before his appointment by President Carter in 1979. Mr. Claiborne was convicted in 1984 of tax evasion and removed from the bench by the Senate in 1986. He was the first federal judge to be sent to prison and served 17 months of a two-year sentence.
Mr. Claiborne always claimed the federal government had a vendetta against him. The Nevada Supreme Court ruled in 1987 that he could practice law in the state. Oscar Goodman, now mayor of Las Vegas, represented him in that case. Goodman said Mr. Claiborne was a great jurist despite his impeachment. " That was a very small part of his life, " Goodman said. " He should be remembered as a superstar in the courtroom. " Born in McRae, Ark., Mr. Claiborne received his law degree from Cumberland University and was admitted to the Arkansas Bar in 1942. He was admitted to the Nevada Bar a few years later and spent two years as a deputy district attorney in Las Vegas. He also served as a one-term Democratic state assemblyman. In 1964, he made an unsuccessful run for the U.S. Senate against then-Sen. Howard Cannon, D-Nev., who later recommended Mr. Claiborne for a U.S. District Court judgeship. In his later years, Mr. Claiborne battled cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer ' s, sai!
d his wife, Norma Ries Claiborne.

Hi,
I recently came across this book
Claiborne pedigree a genealogical table of the descendants of Secretary William Claiborne of the junior branch in the United States with some other tracings in the female line. which I thought might be of interest to the list.
It is currently available through astrologos.org at:
