Hi Claiborne Listers,
The surname Clayburn'as spelt, is the lead name in a section of the LDS
Church records. Although other spellings which could be considered
variants of the name, such as Clebburn' have their own sections.
The Clayburn' spelling appears to have originated in Yorkshire,
particularly in the Howden area of the East Riding of Yorkshire, from
which many family groups around Britain and the world emanate. If the
name was brought into the East Riding of Yorkshire from elsewhere, we
have yet to discover and prove the source. However, there is a strong
probability that the name in East Yorkshire arrived from East Anglia
further down the coast. The Norwich of Norfolk has a rich source of
early spelling variants and in the adjacent county of Suffolk, England,
forms of the name such as Claybyn' can be found.
Persons far more experienced in this matter than myself, consider it
almost certain that many variants are the result of regional dialects.
In early days, names were spelt as they were interpreted by the scribe,
try saying Clayburn' in as many dialects as you can and you will see
how easy it is for the name to be spelt differently. Also, when early
settlers went to North America, Australasia and other areas of the world
during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries , they took with them the
earlier spellings. Hence the Claiborne' old Norfolk English and the
Cleborn' Irish variants found in the USA. Likewise the names ending
with or without an e' result from old English writing of those
centuries.
The object of the Clayburn One-Name Study' under the auspices of the
Guild of One-Name Studies' is to track down and record, every
occurrence of the Clayburn' name and its variants with the aims of:
1. Encouraging research into the name and it variant forms.
2. Plotting the variations of each spelling and their particular
source.
3. Forming family groups from those tabulated records.
4. Filling in the background with interesting stories.

Clare ---
To answer your question(s) from the Claiborne side, I refer you to both the
CLAIBORNE GenForum
(http://genforum.genealogy.com/claiborne)
and to this mailing list's archives
(http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl)
where much has been written about the reported Claiborne-Harris connection.
Suffice it to say that there exists NO credible evidence, much less proof,
that William and Elizabeth (Butler/Boteler) Claiborne had a daughter Mary.
Likewise, from the Harris side, I am not sure it has ever been proven or
evidence found that Richard Harris did, in fact, marry a widow Mary
(Claiborne) Rice. Either way, with the absence of any evidence and/or proof,
it becomes difficult to accept the undocumented compilations of early
genealogists.
It appears that you are using out-dated and, to at least some extent,
disproven
information. You list William Claiborne, b. 1589. While there was a William
Claiborne, b. 1589, he was NOT the William Claiborne who came to Virginia as
a surveyor in 1621 and was appointed Secretary of State for the colony in
1625. This William Claiborne was baptised August 10, 1600, in Crayford
Parish, co. Kent, England, and has no proven connection to the other William
Claiborne.

Hi:
We corresponded briefly a few months ago. I haven't found anything that'll
help you yet, although I've been keeping my eye out for you.............can
you refresh my memory, please? Where was it in TN that you think she was
born?
I'm betting she descends from either James Thompson Claybourn/Claiborne who
remained in TN (DeKalb Co.) and who was the son of Ephraim Claiborne and
Polly Browning. The Browning family seems to have a connection to
"Devine/Divine". I think it's a family name---that Polly's mother might've
been a Devine (can't find proof other than someone's family story, though).
Ephraim and Polly's second son had the middle name of Divine (he moved to
IL); OR, from Polly's sister, Sally, who also married a Claiborne, so she too
would've had the Devine/Divine connection. This couple lived in Macon Co.,
TN, just north of DeKalb on the TN/KY state line. Polly and Sally had a
sister with the middle name of Devine. Have you tried finding her as a child
in a census with her parents (1860 or 1870)? If you know the county where
she lived as a child, you could get on that mailing list and ask for census
lookups.......there's a lot of wonderful people out there who own these
censuses and will do lookups for you. Good luck!
