Surname: Claiborne, Claybourne
-------------------------
Hello,
I have found numerous variations in the spelling of the name. As an example
of how many there are, the online LDS records shows the following...
CLAIBORNE - CLAIBORN - CLABORN - CLAYBORN - CLAYBORNE - CLAYBOURN - CLAIBOURNE
- CLAIRBORNE - CLAYBURN - CLEBURNE - CLEYBOURNE - CLYBORN - CLIBORN.
The reasons for these variations usually have to do with people spelling
their names phonetically - which was always open to individual interpretation
- or it was a deliberate choice to identify one branch of the family from
another. (My Sullivans did this for two generations by adding a 't' to
the end of their name.) And then there were the illiterate census takers
they hired to record our ancestors' names...!
You may find more information on your family by sharing research findings
and ideas with others on a mailing list for this surname. The list discusses
the family throughout the generations, so all spellings are included.

Surname: CLAIBORNE, STOKES, EVANS
-------------------------
Looking for information on the life of John Claiborne, son of Richard Claiborne
and Mary Hamlin of Lunenburg Co., VA. He is, at best, a shadowy figure
that is hard to trace. He married Susannah Stokes, probably in Brunswick
Co., VA, probably in 1780-82. His names shows up in Susannah's father's
estate records regarding guardianship of her younger sister. Since John
was appointed guardian, I have assumed that they were married by then.
There are very few records on him. He seems to have moved back and forth
between VA and NC occasionally interacting with Susannah's brother Thomas
who was a large landowner in first Franklin Co., NC and then Chatham NC.
John's daughter, Sarah, married John Evans (probably in Chatham)and eventually
moved to Jones Co., Monroe Co., and finally Talbot Co. GA. There is a John
Claiborne lurking nearby on tax records and as a witness on various things,
but no clear evidence as to who he was.
Where did John Claiborne go? Where did he die? The estate of Susannah Claiborne
is mentioned in Chatham NC records in 1811, so I assume he was dead by
then.
Would love help with this guy.

Hi everyone,
For November's roll call project, I would like to give you the URLs to our
GenConnect message boards, and ask you to gather family information to post
to the boards.
I'll also include a couple of pointers on how to better utilize the boards.
Since the Rootsweb "gateway" system was put into place last April, posts to
each of the seven boards are now automatically forwarded to our mailing list.
The system has proven successful and use of the boards continues to increase.
There are seven boards -- one for QUERIES, and six for DOCUMENTS.

-----------------------------------
Queries:
For all Queries -- even though it may refer to one of the other
subjects.
Bible Records:
Copy the names and dates exactly as they appear in your family Bible.
Give the date the Bible was published, and also its current
owner/location.
Biographies:
Bios can be an informal narrative you've written of someone's life.
It can be a passage of a printed text -- be sure to cite your sources.
Deeds:
Deeds, land exchanges, or land grant records.
Transcribe the text and tell where the record can be located.
Obituaries:
Transcribe newspaper death notices.
Give the name of the newspaper and date of the article.
Pensions:
Military pensions records. I've found various war records at the
National Archives. Many include pension information.
Wills:
Transcribe wills verbatim and tell where the record can be located.
As you can see, the more we use the GenConnect boards, the more valuable a
research source they will become. Post your information directly to the
boards, and within seconds the post will also appear on our mailing list.
One last point -- Since posts to the boards will be seen by a wider circle of
family researchers, you may get responses from people who are not on our
mailing list. To be sure that everyone sees the resulting discussions,
you'll need to be sure you respond to the board.
Good Luck!
