That's really amazing. I got this from someone on the Coleman list:
Bob, it's really important that you find that reference. Rebecca may have
been the daughter-in-law of Robert Coleman and Elizabeth Grizzell. Their
son Thomas married a Rebecca, surname unknown. In that line, and I don't
remember if it was a grandson or not, but their was a child named Claiborn
Coleman.
Sherry Nicol
So I riterate you were right about the son of Robert Coleman. I also have a Thomas and Rebecca Coleman around the revolution who executed many wills but never mention Rebecca's maiden name ("tradition has it that it is Key or Kay) but I still should have copied the information even though it wasn't mine for these other cousins of mine.
I understand that Col. Wm had some 20 children some of whom I've never seen names for but I would imagine Rebecca would also be descended from Col Wm Claiborne.

Hi Bob,
I'm very interested in this particular timeframe, and enjoy the stories along
with the lineage data. My line is through Lt. Col. Thomas Claiborne's
(1647-1683) daughter, Elizabeth, who married Owen Sullivan. I found a
reference online that might substantiate Mr. Hoskins' theory, or at least
shows that the possibility exists...I'll include it below.

Hi all,
Here are some excellent tips from the Ancestry.com folks today on how to get
more out of your online research efforts.
Also visit the following sites....

(Go directly to the Custom Search/Ancestral File feature...it narrows the
field quite a bit, but it also give you the fuller information formats of
Family Group Records and Pedigree Charts...if that doesn't work for you, go

10 TIPS TO HELP YOU GET MORE FROM ONLINE RESEARCH TIME
by Juliana Smith
=======================================================
1) Think of a trip to a computer like a trip to the library. You wouldn't
go to the library unprepared, so do a little preparatory work before you
log on. I keep a 3-ring binder with printed pedigree charts and family
group sheets on my desk. The binder also contains blank pages where I can
make notes of ideas for new research strategies, sites I want to
investigate later, etc.
2) With the immense array of resources available online (and new sites
going up every day) it is impossible to keep track of where you have
searched, when, and for what. Keeping a research log of sites visited,
searches performed, and results can save much duplicated effort. I keep my
log in a spreadsheet form and keep the log open as I search. Then I can
simply copy/paste the URL into the document and keep track of my searches
as I go. With Web sites that are constantly being updated and/or added to,
you may want to go back every so often to recheck them. Your log can tell
you when you last checked a site. Those with a preference for a paper copy,
can use the downloadable Research Calendar at:
http://www.ancestry.com/download/forms.htm to record searches.
3) Determine what information you need. While it can be fun to wander
aimlessly about the Web, most of us have a limited amount of time that we
can spend surfing for ancestors. Go over your research and decide what
information you are looking for. Once you have decided on a particular
piece of information that is missing, pursue it.
4) Don't just search for surnames. If you know your ancestors were from a
particular location, find out all you can about their hometown or homeland.
While learning about an area, you will often find clues that will open up
new avenues of research.
5) Learn. How-to, beginner sites, and specialized sites dealing with
specific record types, geographic areas, repositories, and/or ethnicity
abound. Use them to locate new resources and methods for conducting your
search. The Ancestry.com Learning Center contains a wide variety of
information and helpful articles, all in one place at:
http://www.ancestry.com/research/index.htm
6) If you don't find the information you seek online, use online sources to
determine what offline avenues are available to you.
7) When you find a pertinent piece of information, make sure you record the
full bibliographic citation. If it is not available on the Web site, write
the webmaster and request it. Citing your sources is critical both online
and off.
8) Post queries on sites like FamilyHistory.com
(http://www.familyhistory.com), where large numbers of researchers visit
regularly and where the people that may have the information you seek have
a good chance of seeing your post. You might also want to consider posting
your GEDCOM online. By submitting your tree to large collections like the
World Tree (http://www.ancestry.com/worldtree/tree.htm), you can also
increase your chances of locating elusive cousins.
9) Once you log off, follow through by proving your findings with original
primary source documents. Online resources are secondary sources at best,
and often contain errors. Additionally, there is often much more
information in the original documents.
10) Have some fun with it! Every so often when you have the time, go off
and explore a bit. You'll be surprised at what you can find in unexpected
places!

Hi Bob,
Here are some gleanings from the LDS site which may refer to the Thomas
Coleman and Rebecca Claiborne you are trying to find. Claiborne is never
specified, but the wife's name is Rebecca. There is an exact marriage date
and location in the last entry...at least it would help you to verify or
eliminate this family.

ROBERT COLEMAN
VIRGINIA (c1620-c1680)
Robert COLEMAN came to Virginia about 1638. He was named as head right in a
grant to Thomas SYMONS, March 2,1638. Patent Book I, Part II, Page 624. It is
to be noted that Thomas SYMONS, by grant dated October 10, 1642, received a
tract of land in that part of the Colony which was to become Gloucester
County.Patent Book I, Part II, Page 830.
Robert was born in England c1620 and married Elizabeth GRIZZELL, daughter of
William c1655 in Virginia. She was born in England c1622. Robert died in
Gloucester County, VA c1680. His descendants relocated throughout the United
States. Those remaining in Virginia included many politicians and judges in
Pittsylvania County, VA. Some of his descendants still reside in Southwest
Virginia.
Robert COLEMAN was settled in Gloucester County in 1658, for by deed dated
August 2, 1658, Francis CARPENTER conveyed a tract of land in Westmoreland
County to "Robert COLEMAN of Mobjack Bay, Gloucester County". D.& W. Book I,
Page 103, Westmoreland County Records.
Thereafter he acquired by grant a tract of land on Burnt Creek in Gloucester
County, adjoining lands of Daniel CLARK, Richard FOSTER "and another
development of his own." This grant is dated March 18, 1662.Patent Book 5,
Page 352. By grant dated March 10, 1672, he acquired two hundred acres more
adjoining CLARK and other.Patent Book 6, Page 34.
His neighbors and adjoining landowners were, among other, Captain Lawrence
SMITH, Daniel CLARK, Daniel LAUGHAM, Thomas and Jeffrey GRAVES. See Patent
Book 5, Page 240; Patent Book 6, Page 560: Patent Book 7, Page 163.
>From the location of the lands described in the various grants, the property
of Robert COLEMAN can be said to have been situated near The Great Road
leading to Tindalls Point (now Gloucester Point) in Gloucester County, VA.
No activity can be found for Robert after 1680.
