Does anyone know the ancestry of former Senator and Ambassador John Claggett
Danforth? How did he get Claggett as his middle name?

Hi Brian...
Could you please send me Neil D. Thompson's email address? If you do not
feel comfortable doing that, could you please forward this email to him.
During the 1990's I was in contact with Brice very often. I was traveling
back and forth to MD at least twice a year for my Maryland family research.
During this time, I was always directing newly found Clagett family members to
Brice. In the beginning our contact was via snail mail or the phone at
Brice's DC law firm. Once, in a great while, Brice would call me from his home
phone during a weekend.
By the mid to late 90's our correspondence switched mostly to email via his
office email address. At the time Brice said he was not "computer savvy" so
I addressed my emails to his assistant. Brice and I still talked on the
phone from time to time.
During one of my last "person to person" phone conversations with Brice,
around 2000, Brice had called me from his home phone in answer to a voice
message I had left for him on his office message system.
When I once again brought up Brice's family research, he seemed overwhelmed
by the subject. I'm paraphrasing, but Brice said something like "I literally
have thousands & thousands of survey forms in boxes all over my property and
I neither have the time nor the resource of compiling all of these forms
into a book."
I explained to Brice that I had written several family history books using a
genealogical software program. I offered to take his survey forms and to
begin to form a Clagett family database that could evidentially be turned into
book form.
If I remember correctly, Brice said he did not have the time to start
organizing the forms because of an upcoming family wedding or vacation. I offered
to come to his house during my upcoming MD trip to help him start organizing
the forms but he asked me to "get back to me next year".
I don't really remember if I followed up on that offer but I did visit his
home one last time in October 2003, but nobody was there. I believe that was
the last time I ever tried to contact Brice in any way. Until I heard about
his death earlier this year, I did continue to send newly found Clagett
family members his way.
I keep hearing family rumors about a "1,200 page book" that is being
compiled from Brice's survey forms but, to date, I have not spoken to single person
that has 1st hand knowledge of this "1,200 page book." That is why I am
interested in talking to Mr. Thompson.

In response to my query, I received the following from Neil Thompson, a
well-known genealogist:
I have heard that his major work is being prepared for publication and have
accepted an assignment to review the final version before it goes to press,
out of respect for his work and his memory. I have no idea when I will
receive the draft or what the final publication date will be. Best regards,
Neil D. Thompson

Hi Brian,
My brother and I returned from England and other ancestral sites 14 August.
The Clagett part of the trip was mostly planned by Brice Clagett. In the
materials he sent me with his advice, he had a 2008 Copyright on the title
page. My last letter to him was just before he died and, of course,
received no response. I looked him up on the internet and found that he had
died. Our trip, in part, was in memory of Brice. I have no further details
about the book. I'm certain that, when the family has had time to deal with
his estate, something will be done about published his work. At least, I
sincerely hope so.
Brice and I also had discussed Dr. Samuel Clagett. I spell it that way
because, even though he spelled the surnames with two t's early in life
(probably the influence of Thomas John), several documents after his
mother's death in 1800 show his signature as Clagett. Also, I noticed
someone has given Ferdinand the title of Dr.-- do you know the evidence is
for that? I have found nothing to support him being called Dr. Ferdinand
Clagett.
Thanks and good luck,
Anne

Rich (and others):
A few months ago, Brice wrote the people on medieval genealogy (many are
professional genealogists) saying he had his book, about 1200 pages, nearly
ready to publish. He wanted to know how many of the members there were
interested. I know of one of those people who had a CD of the book, I
expect to review for him. So the book was nearly ready to come out, and I
expect that the book will appear. I recall, I think, there was someone
working on the manuscript with Brice.

Hello Charlie...
This is Richard Warfield Faber, Jr. As of 2003, the only book or CD Brice
said he had was what he had compiled back in 1947. I have a copy of that
manuscript. When I spoke with Brice the last time he never mentioned that
there was a CD or book with anywhere near 1,200 pages. Have you seen this
book/CD?
I will check with the DAR Library and the Library of Congress during my next
trip to DC. I will also stop by Brice's home in Friendship, MD. I might
also check with the DC law firm where Brice worked before he retired.
Before he retired we exchanged many messages through his firm's email.
Thanks, Rich Faber...
