Rich (and others):
A few months ago, Brice wrote the people on medieval genealogy (many are
professional genealogists) saying he had his book, about 1200 pages, nearly
ready to publish. He wanted to know how many of the members there were
interested. I know of one of those people who had a CD of the book, I
expect to review for him. So the book was nearly ready to come out, and I
expect that the book will appear. I recall, I think, there was someone
working on the manuscript with Brice.

Hello Charlie...
This is Richard Warfield Faber, Jr. As of 2003, the only book or CD Brice
said he had was what he had compiled back in 1947. I have a copy of that
manuscript. When I spoke with Brice the last time he never mentioned that
there was a CD or book with anywhere near 1,200 pages. Have you seen this
book/CD?
I will check with the DAR Library and the Library of Congress during my next
trip to DC. I will also stop by Brice's home in Friendship, MD. I might
also check with the DC law firm where Brice worked before he retired.
Before he retired we exchanged many messages through his firm's email.
Thanks, Rich Faber...

Richard,
I was shocked to hear of Brice Clagett! I have not been in touch with his immediate family as I hadn't heard of his death. He and I had been corresponding about a trip I will be taking to the United Kingdom, with England as the major focus. He sent me part of his information from Captain Thomas Clagett all the way back to Andrew Claygate and other possible names.
I wrote to him 23 February and he responded about 10 days to two weeks later. I had been researching how Dr. Samuel Clagett had signed his name over time. He seemed quite interested because I found that "Dr. Sam" changed back to signing his name Clagett.
I just wrote him 30 April and hadn't received a response. No wonder! He was a wonderful man and will surely be missed. I may have been one of the last of us to be in contact with him.
Sincerely, also a Clagett descendant,

Hi,
I am a Claggett or Clagett descendent. My Dad (Harry J. Clagett, Jr. and my
Grandfather (Harry J. Clagett, Sr.) were contacted by Brice in about the
1970's and I believe that my Mother had talked to Brice when they were visiting
Washington D. C. I was sorry to hear about Brice passing.
I acquired my Mother's notes on the Claggett's and Clagett's she was
trying to make a connection to Bishop Thomas Jefferson Claggett who is buried
under The National Episcopal Cathedral floor.
My mother got as far as James Claggett born in Mass. (some cenus say that he
was born in Maryland) in 1804 he was married to Louisa Watkins, they migrated
to Ohio, Morrow County, they had several children one of them was my Gr Gr
Grandfather, James W. Claggett he was born in 1829 and died 1862 and is buried
in The Nashville National cemetery. He was married to Elizabeth Schooley.
James died during the Civil War as did his brother Setemus Claggett.
James W. Claggett had three children, Mary Clagett born 1851, Thomas J. Clagett
born in 1858 (my Gr Grandfather) and James W. Clagett born in 1862. When my
Gr. Gr. Grandfather died that seems to be when they changed the spelling to
Clagett. My Gr Grandfather Thomas Jefferson Clagett married Elizabeth A.
Reppert and they had three boys, James Fredrick Clagett born 1882, Harry
Jefferson Clagett born 1894 (my Grandfather) William Walter Clagett born 1898. My
Grandfather Harry J. Clagett moved to Canon City, Colorado and married Ruth A.
Wright in 1915, they had four children, Harry Jefferson Clagett ( my
Father), Clara Clagett Boyce, Wilma Clagett Markle, and Alice Marie Clagett De Brey.
My father eventually moved to Denver married my Mom Dorothy Cling Clagett,
they had two children, Nancy Clagett Williams(myself) in 1943 and Steven
Jefferson Clagett born in1948. It of course goes on with my brother's children
and my children and then their children. I know I probably gave you too much
information, but I was just trying to show you as far as I have gotten. I am
sure I probably have Ancestor's that came from England most of them probably
stayed in Maryland. The Clagett's that I have known all stayed in Ohio,
Morrow County, then some of them moved to Eagle Bend, Iowa
If any of you have any information futher back that you think might be
related, I would love to get it.
Take Care,
Nancy Clagett Williams

Brice McAdoo Clagett, 74, a Washington lawyer and historic preservationist,
died April 8 of cardiac arrest at George Washington University Hospital.
An attorney for more than four decades with the law firm of Covington and
Burling, Mr. Clagett's specialties included public and private international
law, foreign claims, international arbitration, international land and maritime
boundaries, transportation and environmental law and Middle Eastern law.
In 1960, former secretary of state Dean Acheson, a partner in the firm, asked
Mr. Clagett to serve as a juridical counselor with the Cambodian delegation
to the International Court of Justice at The Hague. The case was a boundary
dispute between Cambodia and Thailand. Cambodia prevailed, and Acheson was
made Prince of the Royal Order of Cambodia, while Mr. Clagett was made Commander
of the Order.
In 1975, he argued before the Supreme Court in United States v. Maine on
behalf of 11 of the 13 Atlantic coastal states that were challenging on
constitutional grounds the alleged federal ownership of the Atlantic coastal shelf,
which included oil-drilling rights.
Afterward, he received a letter from New Hampshire's deputy attorney general.
"I have yet to make my maiden argument in the Supreme Court, and when I do I
will think back to yours as a model," wrote David H. Souter, who is now a
Supreme Court justice.
Mr. Clagett often appeared before the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal,
established to settle claims between Iran and American nationals after the
Islamic Revolution of 1979. He also represented numerous foreign governments in
matters involving boundary disputes, natural resources, expropriation, war
damages and treaty claims.
Born in the District, Mr. Clagett graduated from St. Albans School in 1950.
He graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University and magna cum laude
from Harvard Law School. He was on the Harvard Law Review and the Board of
Editors and won a Rotary Fellowship to study for a year at the University of
Allahabad, India.
Mr. Clagett joined Covington and Burling as an associate in 1958 and became a
partner in 1967. He retired in 2002.
A lifelong advocate of historic and land preservation and environmental
protection, he served as chairman of the Maryland Historical Trust from 1972 to
1978 and chairman of the Maryland Environmental Trust from 1985 to 1989. He
also was a member of the Clagett Family Committee of the Chesapeake Bay
Foundation.
In 1968, he and his first wife, Virginia Parker Clagett, bought Holly Hill, a
house in Friendship that was built by Mr. Clagett's ancestors more than
three centuries ago. He lavished great care on both the house and gardens.
Passionate about history and genealogy, he compiled a 1,200-page book about
20 generations of his family, including his maternal grandfather, William
Gibbs McAdoo, secretary of the Treasury in the Wilson administration.
"I wasn't born when I was born, and I won't die when I will die," he said in
1975. "I am part of a continuum of the family."
His first marriage ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Diana Sinkler Clagett of the
District; and two children from his first marriage, John Brice de Treville Clagett
of Friendship and Brooke Clagett of the District.

What a surprise I had this evening as I told my husband about
Brice Clagett passing.
He said "Oh I remember when he came to the Calgary Stampede in Calgary,
Alberta, Canada
in the 1950's and met me and my dad". His father, Clifford Harmon
Claggett,
was competing in the Chuckwagon Races at the Stampede at that time.
My husband recalls that Brice explained to them how the
different spelling of Claggett/Clagett began.
He also recalls that Brice Claggett, at that time, established that their
two Clagett/Claggett families were related.
This is what we have from the present back into our past.

Bride McAdoo Clagett's brother.

Hello Everyone...
My name is Richard Warfield Faber, Jr., a Maryland Clagett family descenda
nt. Since the death of our common cousin, Brice McAdoo Clagett, in Maryland
some months ago, has anyone been in touch with his immediate family?
Years ago Brice had what he explained to me as "a mountain of boxes full of
all the Clagett/Claggett "Family Survey" forms" he mailed across the USA, and
beyond, in the 1970's, 80's and possibly 90's. I found out about Brice's
survey when my Great Aunt Hazel Vera (Shields) Leonard (1898-1989), received
one in the late 1970's at her home in CA.
The last time I spoke to Brice was around 2003. I offered to take his
Clagett family surveys and create a computer database that would surpass any such
research on the family to date. At the time, Brice said he had no idea how
to organize his "mountain of surveys". I told him that I could do that just
by entering the survey information into a single, incredibly large,
Clagett/Claggett family database. At the time he declined my offer.
Sincerely, a Clagett Descendant:

My Claggett lineage is the same as Brian Phelp's up to Dr. Samuel Clagett;
my line then continues with:
---Ferdinand Clagett
-------Isaac Newton Claggett
----------Charles Henry Claggett
--------------Henry Harrison Claggett
------------------Annie Virginia Claggett m. Howard J. Garrett
-----------------------Their children are Howard Eugene Garrett and Anne
Elaine Garrett
I am researching Clagett/Claggett; Raimey (Rhemy, Reme, Ramey); Brown from
my mother's side and Garrett; French; Fletcher on my father's side.
I love to exchange information with others.
Anne
