Hi Jane,
I've been in touch a number of times with Brice M. Clagett who has done
indepth research on the Clagetts. Clagett derives from the hamlet of
Claygate in the parish of Shipbourne, Kent, England. Mr. Clagett says that
one has to be careful because there is a Claygate Cross, in Plaxtol and
another Claygate about 11 miles to the east in Marsden. Our Clagett line
takes it name from the one in Shipbourne. You can go online and Google a
lot of these places for more information.
West Malling, Kent is where Robert Clagett (born ca. 1490-1500) resided.
Leybourne Castle, Leybourne, Kent, was the home of Robert Godden, father of
Margaret Godden who married Robert Claget II. There are ruins of a medieval
castle near the church. A sixteenth dwelling house, most likely built by
Robert, is integrated into the remains of the castle according the Mr.
Clagett.
Canterbury, is where George Clagett resided on the east corner of Mercery
Lane directly opposite the main gate to the Cathedral. While the present
house is modern in appearance, it has old beams inside and the basic
structure may predate George's time. The memorial to Bishop Thomas John
Claggett at Canterbury Cathedral originally was the idea of Brice Clagett.
London-- Col Edward Clagett lived on Thmaes Street in the 1640's, and later
on Gracechurch Street, in The Three Crowns hotel. It was destroyed in the
Great Fire of 1666.
Wem, Shropshire, England-- Sir Thomas Adams was born here. There is the Wem
Grammar School there which is the house where Sir Thomas was born. Sir
Thomas' arms serves as the banner for this school. Also, in Sprowston,
Norfolk is Sprowston Hall, a Tudor house which may still be a
hotel-restaurant and was the country home of Sir Thomas. Sprowston Church
hold the tomb of Sir Thomas. He also endowed Cambridge with an Arabic
professorship, which has evolved into The Institute of Oriental Studies at
Cambridge. They regard him as their founder and have a portrait of him.
All of the preceding information came from Brice M. Clagett. My advice is
to Google everything. You can get a trove of information. Just since last
week, I have a pile of information about 1-1/2" thinck. I also Googled the
National Archives in Kew and found the wills of Sir Thomas Adams and Col.
Edward Clagett.
If you are a descendant of Dr. Samuel Clagett, his grandfather Dr. Gustavus
Brown came from Dalkeith, Midlothian, UK.
Hope this helps! Anne

Hi. Thank you for including me on the CLAGGETT Mailing List!
My mother was Annie Virginia Claggett, born 3 June 1912, Midland, Fauquier Co., VA; died 16 August 2001, Bethesda, Montgomery Co., MD. She married my father, Howard Jeffries Garrett 14 September 1931, Rockville, Montgomery Co., MD. My father was born 19 March 1910, Warrenton, Fauquier Co., VA; died 07 March 1966, Washington, DC. My brother, Howard Eugene Garrett, was born 14 Nov 1940, Washington, DC and lives in Hagerstown, MD. I was born (Anne Elaine Garrett) 20 Mar. 1946, Washington, DC and moved to Hagerstown in 2005, 4 years after our mother's death.
I descend from Dr. Samuel Clagett (he went back to one g in later life; I'm still researching this). He was born ca. Aug/Sep 1756, Charles Co., MD, the son of the late Rev. Samuel Clagett and Ann Brown. I have found documents proving that he died 20 March 1820, Snow Hill, near New Baltimore, Fauquier Co., VA. He married Amie Jane Ramey, daughter of Jacob Ramey and Elizabeth Lane, 15 Sep 1786 (The Marriage Bond was dated 22 August 1786 as proven by affadavit of the Charles Eskridge, Clerk of the Circuit Court, Loudoun Co., VA). "Dr. Sam" inherited "Snow Hill," from his mother in 1800. He had ten children.
I descend from Ferdinand Clagett, the oldest child of Dr. Sam and Amie Jane. He was born ca 1789, either Centreville, VA or Culpeper, VA. His date of death has not been established. He married Nancy Sanford when younger than 21, as proven by the need of Dr. Sam's consent. She was at least 21 as she wrote her own consent. They had nine children;
Isaac Newton Clag(g)ett was the youngest child of Ferdinand and Nancy. He was born 1827, near New Baltimore, Fauquier Co., VA; died ca 1887/88. He married Sallie C. (Sarah) Jeffries, daughter of James Jeffries. They had She was born 1828, Fauquier Co., VA; died 15 Nov. 1895, near Baldwin Ridge, Prince William Co., VA. Her death was reported by my great x 2 grandfather, Charles Henry Claggett. Isaac and Sallie had nine children, two of whom died young.
Charles Henry Claggett, born 1 July 1857, near New Baltimore, Fauquier Co., VA; died 31 July, Sykesville, Carroll Co., MD. He married Salomia Virginia Edmonds 27 Dec 1887. She was born 6 May 1870; died 4 Feb. 1952, Frederick Co., MD. They had only one child.
Henry Harrison Claggett, born 13 Nov. 1888, Nokesville, Prince William Co., VA; died 13 Oct. 1948, Frederick, Frederick Co., MD. He married Minnie Jackson Herrell 30 Aug. 1911, Washington, DC. They had five daughters. Their only son, Charles Henry Claggett, died the same day he was born (25 Sep. 1913). My mother was the oldest. She was named after her two grandmothers, Annie (Annie Dora Herrell) and Virginia (after Salomia Virginia Edmonds).
I still am interested in the Warrenton area where both the Garrett and Claggett families lived. I am trying to discover when Isaac N. Claggett died and where he is buried.
Sincerely,
Anne
