From: Dale Russell Claggett, born in Columbus, Ohio, June 8, 1924, and
living in Hawaii since October 20, 1943.
William Claggett was born in Fauquier County, Virginia, on July 11, 1810,
and married Jane Rector (born July 22, 1811) in 1832. In the mid-1800's,
they migrated to Ohio and settled in Licking County, near Neward, Ohio.
William died Feb. 29, 1888, and Jane died Sept. 25, 1883.
The second child of William was Alexander Bennett Claggett, born 02-14-1835,
whose third child was Amos Milton Claggett, born 02-10-1866, whose first
child was Ernest Dale Claggett, born 03-20-1888, whose first child was Dale
Russell Claggett (ME).
Alexander, Amos and Ernest were all born in Licking County, Ohio, and were
all farmers. They lived in an area called Clay Lick, very close to Hanover,
which is about 7 miles from Newark.
There are other Claggetts who lived in this area, probably descended from
William, because there are several prominent gravestones in cemetaries in
the area.
I hope this helps with the Ohio Claggetts.

Has anyone heard of any of the Claggett's in Ohio, I know at least one of
them came from Maryland.? Some of the Clagett's are James, James W,
Septimus,James W. II, Thomas Jefferson.? Some of the women were Caroline,
Elizabeth Schooley? Claggett.? Brice asked for information from my
Grandfather, Father, the Claggett's that migrated to Iowa.

Hi again,
I forgot to add Rye, Sussex as a place to visit. George Clagett's second wife, Ann Colbrand and grandmother of Capt. Thomas Clagett was born there. She died in childbirth and was buried at Rye 26 June 1613. That same day, her twin children, Edward and Martha were baptised. It's a lovely church.
Anne
Hi Jane,
Sir Thomas Adams, knight and 1st Baronet, was the father of Margaret Adams
who married Col. Edward Clagett. He was born in Wem, Shropshire, England
and baptised at Wem 6 Dec. 1586. He died at his residence in Ironmongers
Hall, London 24 Feb. 1667/8. He was master of the Drapers Company of which
Col. Edward Clagett joined. In his will, he mentions Edward Clagett and
willed him (and Margaret) The Three Crowns.
Hope this answers your question; if not, I'll try to answer whatever you
need.
Anne

Thanks, Brian! For those of you who don't want to drive, England has a very
good train system and London an excellent underground subway. London is
terrible for driving, so we opted out. I will try to come up with other
places you might want to visit.
Merry Christmas to everyone!

Hi everyone!
I am more than glad to share Brice's suggestions re Clagett-Adams sites in England. As you will see, part of this includes Brice's suggestions and part are my suggestions. I made out an itinerary for Gene and me with the spirit of a 21-year-old. Unfortunately, both of us have the bodies of senior citizens and could not complete all we had wanted due to a case of food poisoning followed closely by a virus which turned into bronchitis. I hope you all will not have our luck!
First on his list, was Claygate, which is but a small hamlet of five houses, two of which are related to the Clagetts. Claygate, is a large house (not a castle as some have called it) During the time Brice visited, this hamlet had only two houses, Claygate which is old. Both he (about 30 years ago) and I were told that it has some of the original beams and sections which could date back to our ancestral times. BE CAREFUL. There are 2 Claygates in Kent, both of which are tiny villages. The right one is in the parish of Shipbourne. It is just a few miles north of Tonbridge. We found a taxi driver who could take us directly to it and it was well worth using him as a guide.
I also advise you to schedule a visit to Leybourne Castle, not far from Claygate. At one time, Robert Godden owned the castle. His daughter Margaret married Robert Clagett (at one time called Robert of Claygate). Margaret transmitted the Godden arms to her descendants as a quartering. Thus, the Clagett/Godden arms.
You might want to visit the National Archives in Kew, Surrey, England and obtain both the wills of Sir Thomas Adams and Col. Edward Clagett. (Edward and Margaret are in Sir Thomas' will.
2. Brice also suggested a trip to Canterbury. Canterbury Cathedral has a cenotaph for Bishop Thomas John Claggett. (My note: it is along a outdoor passage leading to the Archives.) Also in Canterbury is mayor George Clagett's house, directly across the Buttermarket Square in front of the main gate to Canterbury close. In Brice's time, it was a china shop. When we visited, it was empty and being painted on the outside. (Note: When facing Buttermarket with your back to the Cathedral, it is to the left of a Potter's shop, the wood frames are painted green). As Brice said, it is totally unrecognizable as old, but the old beams are inside, but not much else. George Clagett was buried at St. Andrew's which no longer exists.
A NOTE from me: While in London, you may want to visit Draper's Hall. It was being redecorated and refurbished while we were there. We were unable to tour the place. May you have better luck. Ironmonger's Hall, on Fenchurch St. and The Three Crowns, on Gracechurch Street no longer exists. The streets still exist , but the area has yielded to commercial development. You may also wish to visit the Monument to the Great Fire of 1666 and related areas. St. Mary's on Hill Church was rebuilt after the fire and is a beautiful church inside.
3. Next suggestion from Brice: St Mary's Church, in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. It has a carving of the Clagett arms set in the floor, over the tomb of Nicholas Clagett. (Note: It is in the center aisle on the right side near the front.) Nicholas Clagett was a cousin of our branch.
4.) Bradokes Hall, in Wimbish, Essex, was the home of Richard Clagett, brother of Capt. Thomas Clagett of Maryland. His wife inherited it from the Wyseman family.
5.) For Sir Thomas Adams: his extraordinary tomb in Sprowston church, Norfolk (Note: Now named St. Mary and St. Margaret's Church. It is a small church which they leave open for visitors. Sir Thomas' tomb is on the altar at the right wall. The tomb has full-length effigies of both him and his wife. (Even knowing that, we were quite surprised by its magnificence.) Sprowston Hall, is now a hotel, which Brice thought is now called Sprowston Manor. (We didn't get to see this.)
Sir Thomas was born in Wem, Shropshire (west England near Wales). He founded a school at Wem which bears his arms (with a small modification in the upper left). Unfortunately, due to illness and a tight schedule, I didn't get there. However, I wrote them a letter when I returned and they sent me information plus a small plaque bearing their arms. Cambridge University has the Institute of Oriental Studies which recognizes him as it founder and has a large portrait of him.
You may also want to visit Birling and Ryarsh, both of which are just north of Claygate. Cemeteries there have a number of graves with variants of the name, probably of different lines.
And so ends the part of the trip associated with Clagetts. If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer if I am able.
Anne
P.S. Please excuse any typos.
Good morning Dave and Debbie,
I hope you don't mind, but I'd like to add a few corrections. I, too, am
descended from Ferdinand Clagett. The name was actually Clagett until
Bishop Thomas John Claggett changed it for his own line. The only other
Clagett who spelled it Claggett was Charles Clagett.
Capt. Thomas Clagett, son of Col. Edward Clagett and Margaret (Adams)
Clagett was born 3 April 1645 and baptised 10 April 1645, St. Mary at Hill
Parish, London, England. (I have have documentation.) He was the first to
come to America-- up the Chesapeake Bay in 1670/71 and settled on St.
Leonard's Creek, Calvert Co., MD.
His son Richard, had a son Rev. Samuel Clagett, for both of whom I have
documentation. Rev. Samuel Clagett first married Mary Gantt by who he had
four children, one of whom was born in 1749 and died ca. 1750. Mary died
about the same time. Rev. Clagett married Ann Brown, daughter of Gustavus
Brown. My details are not complete because I'm doing this off the top of my
head. Rev. Clagett died in August of 1756. In his will he leaves and
estate and two slaves to "the child that my wife is now bigg with." That
child was his namesake, Dr, Samuel Clagett. Ann remarried and, for whatever
reason, left the very young child, Samuel with her family to raise and moved
to Virginia with her new husband. This, most likely, is the reason that
Samuel's older half-brother had such an influence one him. Following the
Revolutionary War, in which Samuel served as a Surgeon's Mate, he moved into
Virginia, marrying Amie Jane Ramey in Loudoun County, VA and stayed in
Centreville for a while. He then was in Culpeper County, for a short time.
At that time, he spelled his surname Claggett. Samuel's mother, Ann Hanson
by that time (a third husband) died in 1800 leaving an large parcel of land
which she had bought from a son and another person to him. Around this
time, Samuel began spelling his name Clagett again, as his father did. I
have documentation for the spelling.
Ferdinand was Samuel and Amie Clagett's firstborn. I am descended from his
lastborn child, Isaac Newton Clag(g)ett.
So, as you see, Thomas John Claggett and half-brother Samuel Clagett (Jr.)
were born in this country. Samuel was not born until after his father died
in 1756. I too have difficulty spelling the surname with one "g" since my
mother's family spelled it that way and that is all she knew. Her
grandfather, Charles Henry Claggett informed his grandchildren that they
were directly descended from the Bishop. NOT SO. Further research proved
that they were descended from Dr. Samuel Clagett who settled in Fauquier,
several miles from Warrenton and near New Baltimore. Samuel's land is now a
170-large home development, which at least leaves some integrity by having
circles and no through streets with woods and "lakes" scattered throughout.
I hope this helps. If you would like any additional information, I would be
happy to help. Would it be possible for you to send me information on
William and Jane's family? My information is quite incomplete.
By the way, you're right, Fauquier County is beautiful county.
Unfortunately, it like every other place, is yielding to commercial
development.

I would love to see this family branches connected in a family tree. Would
anyone be willing to volunteer to collect information from everyone and
create and share a family tree for this branch?

Here is an article I found from a newspaper in Newark, Ohio. It was the
Claggett family reunion of 1936. My grandfather Herbert Claggett attended
and it lists all the families that were there. Maybe you will recognize one
of the names.

Has anyone heard of any of the Claggett's in Ohio, I know at least one of
them came from Maryland.? Some of the Clagett's are James, James W,
Septimus,James W. II, Thomas Jefferson.? Some of the women were Caroline,
Elizabeth Schooley? Claggett.? Brice asked for information from my

IN ANSWER TO DALE'S QUESTION:
"I have Martha married to Forest Baughman, and David Bryan
Baughman, born April 8, 1958. Is this David you? If so, you and I are third cousins."
Yes, but I am Deborah. David Bryan Baughman is my "little" brother. Martha & Forrest (2 r's) had 6 children. I am the 5th. (My husband is David Barber.)
REGARDING CLAGGETTS IN OHIO:
There are many of us. My Claggett ancestors came to Ohio from Virginia. William, son of Ferdinand, came to Ohio about 1843, with his wife Jane Rector. They settled on a farm in Perry Township, Licking Co., where they resided until their deaths. William on 29 Feb. 1888, and his wife on 25 Sept. 1883.
I have a folder of the "Claggett Family History" given to me by the husband of my mother's cousin, Hazel Chapman. (Hazel Beatrice Claggett/Orey G. Claggett/William E. Claggett/William Claggett/Ferdinand Claggett/Samuel Claggett/). The first paragraph reads: "Transcribed from a record of the Claggett Family in Licking County, Ohio, as prepared and kept by Amos Milton Claggett. Updated 1988 by Robert E. Dove." Robert was Hazel's 2nd husband.
>From what I read in this folder, it appears that Samuel and his brother Thomas John Claggett came to America from England about 1754. Thomas John Claggett settled in Maryland, and Samuel settled in Virginia. Other information, such as the 1880 Ohio census records, show that John Burr Claggett (my Great Grandfather) was the son of William Claggett & Jane and that William & Jane were born in Virginia. This folder says they were natives of Fauquier Co., VA. (Beautiful country, BTW. If you've never been, any time you have a chance to drive through, do take the opportunity. Just beautiful.)
The line is as follows:
Richard Claggett, born in Malling County, Kent.
His son, Richard
His son, George (three times mayor of Canterbury)
His son, Colonel Edward Claggett (married to Margaret Adams, the daughter of Lord Adams, Lord Mayor of London)
His son, Richard
His son, Captain Thomas Claggett came to Maryland about 1670.
The next paragraph says that "Thomas John Claggett and Samuel Claggett, brothers, came to the United States from England in the year 1754." It doesn't show the connection to Captain Thomas Claggett or to Colonel Edward Claggett.
Anyway, the document is about 35 pages. I am considering transcribing it onto my computer and saving it to disk.
What I find really interesting: the people you discover to whom you are distantly related. It just is awesome to ponder. Our house burned down several years ago. We moved in with my parents temporarily, and our little girl became friends with their neighbor's little girl. And guess who I find in this folder? Yep! The neighbors.
I remember when I was a little girl, and mom got the letter form Brice Clagett asking her for information about herself, her family and her parents. I would love to see the fruit of his labor. Hopefully it will get published.
RE: CLAGETT/CLAGGETT
Interesting how names come to be spelled the way they are. Oprah wouldn't be Oprah if her name hadn't been misspelled on her birth certificate. She'd be Orpah. It does seem to me that on one of the census sheets that at least once I've seen it spelled "Clagett" but I find it difficult to spell it any other way then "Claggett."
Research does get very confusing sometimes. I end up in a brain fog and find myself confusing dates and and names. I'm new at this, but am determined to do it correctly.
I'm sorry about the blank e-mail that I accidentally sent out last Friday.
Here's what happened. As I was reading a recent message from another GLAGGETT
rootsweb member I got out my folder of Clagett/Glaggett data and flipped it open
while the message was still there, opened, on my computer desktop. Next thing
I knew my folder must have struck the "enter" key on my keyboard which sent
out the blank message(s). Again, I'm sorry if this caused any confusion.
However, as I then continued looking through my folder I came upon a bit of
research I had set aside earlier about a link between my wife's (Kathryn
Tallmadge) great grandfather, James Edmund Tallmadge of Kendall Co., Illinois and
the Clagett/Claggett family of Kent, England. That link, for her Tallmadge line
at least, is Sally Litsey, b. 27 Aug 1836 in Rough Creek, Kentucky and d. 13
Apr 1859 in Kendall Co., Illinois and her father John Litsey (the son of John
and Mary Pirtle Litsey) who married Mary Jane Claggett on 29 Sep 1835 in
Caneyville, Grayson Co., Kentucky. Mary Jane was b. 24 Jul 1820 in Kentucky and d.
23 Jan 1905 in Yorkville, Kendall Co. Illinois.
In order to be sure about this connection, I need to determine with some
certainty that Mary Jane Claggett is the daughter of Charles Claggett (abt.
1787-1851) of Woodford and Grayson Counties, Kentucky and his first wife Rebecca
Gay, daughter of John and Sarah (Lockridge) Gay of Woodford Co.
If she is, I need to determine further that Charles Claggett is the son of
Henry Claggett (abt. 1755-1823) of Iredell, North Carolina, who later moved to
Woodford and Grayson Counties, Kentucky, and Elizabeth Hayes daughter of
Jermiah and Sarah Hayes of Montgomery Co., Maryland.
If these two relationships are as I have stated then I will have the link I
am looking for. If anyone has information about these relationships I would be
most grateful if you contacted me. Thank you!
Sincerely, LeRoy Augustine.

Nancy Clagett Williams,
My wife has direct ancestry to a Claggett line in Ohio from Maryland tracing
back to England. Brice McAdoo Clagett was kind of enough to have
communicated a confirmation of this line to me in the mid-1990's. I have
obtained other corroborative information since then.

Please note there are many repetitive names in this area.... I have three
Samuel Clagget's; three Ann Magruder's; eight Thomas Clagett's; seven
Samuel Magruder's; three Ann Belt's; three Ninian Magruder's; and a
partridge in a pear tree (just to see if you are awake). Thus, it behooves
one to be very careful with the records and alignment.
Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
Thanks.

Has anyone heard of any of the Claggett's in Ohio, I know at least one of
them came from Maryland.? Some of the Clagett's are James, James W,
Septimus,James W. II, Thomas Jefferson.? Some of the women were Caroline,
Elizabeth Schooley? Claggett.? Brice asked for information from my
Grandfather, Father, the Claggett's that migrated to Iowa.

Hi Dave, Debbie and Dale,
Just a note on the spelling of Clagett/Claggett. The Rev. Samuel Clagett
always spelled his name with one g. Bishop Thomas John Claggett changed his
surname to two g's while in England following his ordination. He said he
found the correct spelling was with two g's. There is really no proof of
that. Dr. Samuel Clagett apparently was influenced by his half-brother
Thomas John and spelled his name with two g's until he was named in his
mother's will in 1800. Following that, it appears he changed his surname
back to one g. Ferdinand also spelled his name with one g. I firmly
believe that it was the enumerators of the census later on who began
spelling our surname with two g's. My great great grandfather, Isaac Newton
Claggett appears to have signed his name with two g's as did my great
grandfather, Charles Henry who informed my mother and her siblings that they
were direct descendants of the Bishop (NOT!). My mother's family always
spelled her surname Claggett, however I've found so much evidence to the
contrary that I feel this was actually a "morphing" into two g's.
I am so glad to find more about William and Jane (Rector) Claggett's line.
I would greatly appreciate hearing more. This summer, my brother and I were
in England following a "tour" which Brice Clagett devised for me. I was
most grateful to him. We were corresponding back and forth and my last
letter to him went unanswered. He had died before responding.

Hi Dave & Debbie:
John Burr was the fifth child of William Claggett and Jane Rector, born July
11, 1810 and July 22, 1811, respectively. Alexander Bennett Claggett was the
second child of William and Jane, and is my direct ancestor and brother to
John Burr.
William was the son of Ferdinand Claggett and Nancy Sanford, and Ferdinand
was the son of Samuel Claggett, Jr., born in 1756, and Amie Jane Ramey.
Samuel, Jr., was the son of Rev. Samuel Claggett, born in 1718, and Anne
Brown. The second child of Rev. Samuel Claggett was Thomas John Claggett,
who became the first Episcopalian Bishop consecrated in America, and is
buried in the basement of the Episcopalian Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
I have Martha married to Forest Baughman, and David Bryan Baughman, born
April 8, 1958. Is this David you? If so, you and I are third cousins.
Keep in touch.
Dale Russell Claggett, born June 8, 1924, in Columbus, Ohio, and I have
lived in Hawaii since 1943. Still working in the Insurance agency which I
founded in 1964.

I am most interested in the John Burr Claggett line. My Grandfather was
James Franklin Claggett, John Burr's son. James married Mary Ann Davis,
daughter of Benton Davis and Sarah M. Wright. Their daughter Martha
Isabelle is my mother. Her sister (my aunt) Etha L. Claggett, passed
away last week and Mom showed me a handwritten note of Etha's that lists
the birthdays and death dates of her grandparents and siblings.
