children of Horatio Clagett, Sr. to post to my Clagett folder:
Captain Horatio Clagett, ca. 1779-1866, born Prince Georges County,
Maryland; came to Tennessee in a wagon in 1816 or 1817 with a colony of
Marylanders who settled on Lick Creek in Hickman County. Horatio Clagett is
listed in the Hickman County census of 1820, and at that time owned 31

was living in 1850, but returned to Hickman County before his death in 1866.

Tom,
I wuld be interested in any information you can provide on the Joseph
Clagett and Elizabeth Hawkins branch of the family. I don't have much.
They didn't by any chance have any family who moved to Hardy County
Virginia (now West Virginia). There was a Henry Clagett who lived there
around 1800. His children ultimately arrived in Missouri where I live, But
I can't find where he came from. Nonetheless I ould like any information
on your family. It appears that our common ancestor is Thomas I. I would
be glad to provide you with info on my line. Thanks

For starters, I doubt whether James and Louisa were born in Mass., but I
could be wrong. Early in the imigration cycle there were 2 branches of
clagett/Claggetts that cmae to america: One was Wyseman/Wiseman Claggett
who settled in Mass/New hampshire (arrived around 1758); 2nd was Thomas
Clagett who arrived in Maryland around 1670. Both are related.
There isn't as much work done on the New Englander, Wyseman Claggett
although he was a infamous fellow. He he had 5 male children and I don't
have family information on two of the sons who could have been James'
ancestor. Many of the family lived in Mass as well as New Hampshire.
The second Clagett is more likely since most of the Wyeseman Claggett bunch
headed straight west and didn't venture as far south as Maryland (at least
I have been able to find any). Many White's married Claggetts in Maryland.
You are right about John Claggett (b 1733) marrying Cassandra White (b
1732) although they were well before the birth of James. However, John
Claggett had a son named Walter who married Adrianna Woodward. I have
identified two children of theirs. One is Walter II (b abt 1780) and
Harriet (b 1807). It is possible that your James was another son born
1805. I have no record of a Louisa Watkins, but she could have been the
wife of James. It may also be of interest that John Claggett died in Anne
Arundel County, Md.
If the above hypothsis is true you are related to Thomas Jefferson
Claggett. John Claggett was the son of Edward Clagett and the grandson of
Richard Clagett who was the father of Rev Samuel Clagett. So Edward and
Samuel were brothers. Rev Samuel is my direct ancestor and is the father
of the good Bishop. I am descended from Rev Samuel's second wife and
Thomsa Jefferson was descended form his first wife.
As to the spelling of the name. There is a story around that Bishop
Claggett added the extra g in the name. That may be true but he isn't the
only branch of the family to do so. Many of the family who moved west
changed there name to two 2'gs in the 1750-1800 time frame. I don't know
why. Perhaps it was the notariety of the Bishop.
If you find out anything else I would be interested in the finformation.
The key seems to be whether James was born in Mass or Md. If Mass, I doubt
whether he is part of this branch of the family. Sorry I couldn't be of
more help.

My Great Great Great Grandparents were married in Anne Arundel, Maryland
2/11/1822,James Claggett and Louisa Watkins, they were both born in Mass., James
1805 and Louisa in 1810, their first son was James Walter, born September 24,
1828 in Maryland. They moved to Ohio Cardington, Morrow County and had the
rest of their children in Ohio, there were seven children. James W. and
Septimus died during the war, of 'Consumption" what is called now tuberculosis.
My Mother had written down that James Father was Walter Claggett and his
wife was Cassandra White, but the only Cassandra White I found was married to
John Claggett.
If you have any information about these Claggett's I would love for you to
share it. The whole time my Mother was working on our Ancestor's she was
trying to make the connection to Thomas Jefferson Claggett, the First Episcopal
Bishop consecrated on American Soil.

Dale are you sure this is from the Maryland line. Most of the Boston and
New hampshire Claggetts are descecnded from Wysman Claggett who settled in
New Hampshire. He is a distnat relative of the Thomas Clagett crowd of
Maryland

While touring Colonial Williamsburg Virginia in October 2006 with my
husband, I was pleasantly surprised to see a beautiful tall clock made by a
William CLAGGETT. I do not believe that I am descended from him at all but
I was still excited. I believe that it was in the The DeWitt Wallace
Decorative Arts Museum although there was a museum that was closed and there
was a temporary exhibit there.
Following is the description of the clock from a show several years ago
when it was on tour to New York, before returning back to Williamsburg where
it is now:
Nothing quite so readily expresses the idea of time past and time to come
than a timepiece, and one of Colonial Williamsburg's grandest is displayed
at the Winter Antiques Show-a mahogany tall clock made about 1745 by William
Claggett. A Bostonian, Claggett moved to Newport, Rhode Island, where he
made clocks and navigational instruments for the shipping merchants of the
Atlantic trade.
This mahogany tall clock in the Colonial Williamsburg collections was made
in Rhode Island by William Claggett about 1745.

I am sorry I am not going to be of much help. The 1880 census for George
Martin gives his marital status as Widower. This probably means that Mary
E died between the birth of Jack Moore Martin (1874) and the 1880 census.
There appear to be three Martin cemeteries in Hickman county. At least
thats what the county web site gives. You might start there. If she is
listed in the Centerville Cemetery should would be Mary E Martin. If you
know where they lived you might check the cemeteries in the locality and
the same goes for any church they attended. I don't see Nolia anywhere so
do you know what happened to her. If she died they may have been buried
together. Sorry I couldn't be of more help

To Jane or Steve or Whomever,
I have been trying to find out what happened to Mary E. Clagett born about
1845. She was the daughter of William George Clagett and Elizabeth Ore
Hornbeak, and she married my husband's great grandfather, George W. Martin,
on December 29, 1868. They had 3 children, Magnolia (Nolia Clagett
1864-1936), William Clagett Martin (1869-1944) and my husband's grandfather,
Jack Moore Martin, Sr. (1874-1949). Most of the Clagett's are buried in the
Centerville Cemetery in Centerville, TN but I have been there several times
looking, and cannot find Mary E. Clagett. She is not on the 1880 census
that George and William and Jackson show on, so she either died OR
remarried, but I have hit a brick wall. It sounds like you both have lots
of ancestory info on the Clagett family. I would appreciate any help you
can give me.
Thank you
Betty Caughron

Last night I was looking through Tennessee records- I think census records-
and I ran across a Nolia Clagett and another living with another family. I
believe they were Williams. I will try and locate the records. I didnt'
do anything with the records because I couldn't figure out how they fit
with everything. I will see if I can find the record.

Jane
Thanks for the information. I have swapped information with Brice for
several years now. I have information on your family's ancestors which I
will send to you in another e-mail. They are descended from Capt Thomas
Claggett who arrived in Maryland about 1670. I need to handle some other
matters for a few minutes and will send you more information later.

Jane Silver says: Sometime in the 1800s, Horatio Clagett came to
Centerville, Tennessee with a group of people who were called locally "the
Maryland colony". His son Horatio, Jr. was a rather prominent citizen of
the small rural community. He and some other gentlemen founded the First
National Bank of Centerville in 1886, the first bank there, I believe. He
had several children, among them my great-grandfather Robert Montgomery
Clagett. Robert M. Clagett had two sons and three daughters. His daughter
Floy was my grandmother. So I know a great deal about the local family,
because I grew up in Centerville hearing stories about them. But I
understood that the ancestors were interesting people, and little was known
about them among the immediate family. I have always been interested to
hear about Brice Clagett's research into our ancestry. When I found the
Claggett(a)rootsweb.com website, I subscribed, just 3 days ago. I'm happy to
learn as much as I can, and to try to keep in touch. Jane Silver

Steve,
My husband's family descend from Dr. Samuel Clagget and Julia Sanford.
They had a daughter named Frances "Fannie" Caroline Clagget who married a
William Francis. My husband is a Francis from that line. I don't have alot
of information but was exploring. My great-aunt is a member of the D.A.R.
because of Dr. Samuel Clagget and my daughter (12 years old) would like to
be a member of the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) She has
participated in People-to-People and they always ask the kids what they know
about their geneology.
Any information you could send would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Karen Francis
