Jane Silver writes: I am descended from Horatio Clagett, Sr., who
moved to Tennessee around 1816. I have most of the information about
his descendants, but almost nothing about his brothers and sisters
and what happened to them. Another descendant sent me the following
information about Horatio and his move to Tennessee.
1. HORATIO8 CLAGETT, SR. (WILLIAM7, JOHN6, THOMAS5, THOMAS4,
EDWARD3, GEORGE2, ROBERT1) was born Dec 09, 1779 in MD, and died Oct
11, 1866 in Hickman Co., TN. He married REBECCA GANTT Abt. 1809 in
MD, daughter of GEORGE GANTT and ELIZABETH STODDERT. She was born
Aug 08, 1786 in MD, and died Feb 24, 1876 in Hickman Co., TN.
Notes for HORATIO CLAGETT, SR.:
Horatio was most likely named in honor of his uncle, Capt. Horatio
Clagett (1756 - 1815) of the Revolutionary Army, who he is sometimes
confused with. Around 1792 his father William was said to have died.
In 1795 his widowed mother married Col. John Hancock Beans. Horatio
is listed in Prince Georges Co., Maryland in 1800. He owned 9 slaves
in that year. Around 1809 he would have married Miss. Rebecca Gantt,
most likely at her parents home in Maryland near Washington City.
Sometime around the end of the War of 1812 (1812 - 1815) Horatio
and his family migrated to Middle Tennessee. In 1817, Horatio Clagett
(of Maury Co., TN) purchased 182 1/2 acres on Lick Creek in Hickman
Co., TN. In 1819 he purchased 7 tracts of land containing 135 acres,
on Morrison's Creek in Hickman Co., TN. Living there in the same
neighborhood near the Clagett's, were the Tyler, Berry, Primm, Smoot,
Gantt, and Smith families, who were said to be from Maryland as well.
In February of 1819 Horatio was listed at the estate sale of John
Alderson of Maury Co., TN.

In his publication, /"John Henry Clagett/", James P. Cornette states
that Capt. Thomas Clagett, who was the original ancestor of the American
Clagetts had changed the spelling of the name from Claggett after
arriving in America, and it has been generally spelled Clagett by his
descendants ever since, except for those in the line of Bishop Thomas
John Claggett, great grandson of Capt. Thomas Clagett through his son
Richard, and Richard's son Rev. Samuel Clagett.
Bishop Thomas John Claggett made a study of family records while on a
visit to England, and upon the evidence which he found, restored to his
name the "g" which Capt. Thomas Clagett had dropped out.

I made a chance connection with the Claggett line through tracing some of the children of Robert F. Beatie, Pulaski Co., KY. Mary Beatie was one of the children that was listed but there is never any information given on her whereabouts--despite many Beatie researchers. Her 1953 TX death certificate confirms that I have the right person.

This is in response to an earlier caution by several list members. Mary Beatie probably met J.F. Claggett while visiting her sister who was married in Callahan Co., TX in 1882. The Beaties moved all over the US and the siblings then visited and many times met spouses.

One question. On your website you have both 1827 and 1824 as the birth
years for James Augustine. Which is correct

My Claggett lineage is:
Forest Claggett, Jr
---William Forrest Claggett
-------Charles Claggett
---------Thomas John Claggett
-------------Dr Samuel Claggett
------------------Rev Samuel Clagett, etc
I am doing research on as many Claggett/Clagett lines as I can find, but
especially any of those that went through Missouri. Sorry don't have any
web sites.

I am looking for the family of J. F. Claggett who was living in Callahan Co., TX, from abt 1882 to his death between 1900 and 1910. His wife was Mary Beatie from Pulaski Co., KY. (I am a Beatie researcher focusing on the famiy of John and Eleanor Gilmore Beatie, Washington Co., VA.) I made a chance connection with the Claggett line through tracing some of the children of Robert F. Beatie, Pulaski Co., KY. Mary Beatie was one of the children that was listed but there is never any information given on her whereabouts--despite many Beatie researchers. Her 1953 TX death certificate confirms that I have the right person.
Yes, the last name--in all records I have found so far--has two "g"s in it. I have land grant records from Callahan Co., TX in both 1882 and 1905--both using two "g"s. This is in response to an earlier caution by several list members. Mary Beatie probably met J.F. Claggett while visiting her sister who was married in Callahan Co., TX in 1882. The Beaties moved all over the US and the siblings then visited and many times met spouses.
In researching census records, I have a John F. Claggett in the 1870 census for Funkstown, MD. He was 11 years old at the time. I do not remember the parents name at this moment. Does anyone know where I can find out more information on the Funkstown, MD Claggetts?
Since the Claggett group is pretty low volume and we have several new
members, I encourage all subscribers to reply with their current areas of
research, their Claggett lineage, and any public web pages they'd care to
share.
