I don't have the exact match in my database. There appears to be 5
alternatives for J F Claggett. There are 2 John's , 2 James and 1 Joseph
all born about 1855/56 in Maryland that appear in the 1860 census. I don't
see any of them in Ky in 1880 at least in Pulaski County and it looks as if
Molie was still there with her parents. I am sorry to not be of much help.

Thank you for your help. I have been reviewing my database and found that Mollie's sister was married in Callahan Co., TX in 1885--two years before Mollie and J.F. were married (according to Census data). Mollie may have been visiting her sister in Texas when she met him. I am trying to get the marriage records from Callahan Co., TX. Also, land grant deeds from Texas (which I discovered last night) place J. F. Claggett in Callahan Co., TX as early 1882. Still no reference to him besides J.F., however.
If I find more, I will share it with you!

HI Joann,
I don't have any information on J.F. Claggett, but I suggest that you
make sure about the spelling. Most of the Clagetts that came to this
country spelled their name with only one g. Many of the Clagetts that
were born in Maryland moved to Kentucky and Ohio. Most of my ancestors
remained in the Maryland area. My great grandmother was Martha Ann
Clagett who married John B. Heeter in Montgomery County, Maryland in
1848. Sorry that I couldn't be more help.

I have discovered that one of my Beatie family members married a Claggett and I am trying to find out when he died and where. This is what I know.
Mary Beatie was born in May 1864 in Pulaski Co., KY. She must have met J. F. Claggett and married him about 1887. Where she met him and when they married is unknown. The information about when they married came from the 1900 TX census which said they had been married 13 years.
J.F. Claggett was born in June 1856 in MD--information from the census. Mary Beatie Claggett is listed as having four children and only two living in the 1900 Census. They are living in Callahan Co., TX--he is a stock raiser and breeder.
[I found a John F. Claggett in the 1870 Maryland Census living with John H. Claggett in Funkstown, Washington County, MD. Could this be him?]
By 1910, Mary Beatie Claggett is a widow, having born five children and only one living. What a hard life she must have had over the twenty-three years between 1887 and 1910.
She lives with her daughter, Nel, and her husband, R. C. Allen in 1920 in TX but so far I have found no sign of her in 1930.
She died in August 1952 and is buried in the Woodman's Circle Home Cemetery in Grayson Co., TX. I have determined that this Cemetery is attached to the Woodman's Circle Home which provided supported living for the widows and orphans of Woodmen of the World fraternal members. Thus, her husband must have been a member of this organization.
I have not been able to track her daughter, Nel, up to the present. I thought if I could find the family, I could contact them and find out what happened. However, no luck.
Please let me know if any of you have any information to help me. This represents a little known and basically lost part of the Beatie family.
Mary Beatie was a descendent of the Beatie family of Washington Co., VA that dates from the 1700s. She also was a descendent through her mother of the Col. William Edmondson line. This gentleman was a well-known Revolutionary War General.
Thank you!
