Hello Claffey Listers,
Earlier today, I received a message from Kay Folan who recently visited Clonmacnoise in Ireland. I then forwarded her message to all of you.
For those who may not remember Kay, she has been a contributor to CHP (Claffey Home Page ) since June of 2003.
Her contributor page is at URL

Regards To all. Carol Mounts
Hi Kay,
Thanks so much for your Clonmacnoise information (although I already have it).
I hope you enjoyed your visit there as much as Glenn and I did.
We took the opportunity of our 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2000 to travel to Clonmacnoise and also Longford County,Ireland, the home county of my third great grandparents James and Jane Claffey who are buried here in Washington County PA, within 6 miles of my home.
James and Jane Claffey are buried in the Old Donegal Catholic Cemetery 3 miles west of Claysville Pa and very near West Alexander, Pa. That story is on CHP with two pages of photos at URL

My first knowledge of Clonmacnoise came in the form of a letter from a cousin David Claffey (now deceased) telling me of a Claffey Church in Ireland. He sent me a lovely photo of it and I knew that I just had to go there ! ! David was Claffey Home Page contributor besides Ann and Jim Claffee who persuaded me to put the web site together in the first place. Ann has been a major contributor ever since.
David's contribution to CHP (Claffey Home Page is to be found at URL

My own experience at Clonmacnoise with many photos and many more to go on line is at URL
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/%7Ecamounts/clonmac1.htm
I see by visiting these pages again that they are in need of many updates . Email address there is incorrect. My email address is
camounts(a)worldnet.att.net but will change again by weeks end so I will wait a few days to make corrections.
The Clonmacnoise page also has many links at the bottom which describe the Ring of Churches there, one of them being the Claffey Church (now called Doulin Church) I stood inside that lovely old shell of a building the size of my living room and marveled at the structures and the stories and the magnificence of the Place on a bend of the Shannon River in the middle of Ireland. I cannot WAIT to go back. I also saw and photographed the many Claffey tombstones there both upright and flat in the grass bot inside and outside of the structure.
Will try to get more information and photos on line this fall.
Did you get any photos while there? if so, can we use them on CHP? A young man (One of our contributors) also visited and sent us many photos) They will all go online this fall as well.
Must go for now. Storm brewing. Thanks again and please keep in touch.
Regards Carol Ann Claffey Mounts

Carol: On a recent trip to Ireland, while visiting Clonmacnoise, I came upon some small upright gravestones in what looked like the ruins of small brick home. Much to my surprise,they all had the name CLAFFEY!!. (Some letters were hard to read, but definitely Claffey)
I copied the following information from the stones, as best I could:
(1) John, d. Nov.30,1921 (78 Yrs.); wife: Mary Anthony d. 25, Feb, 1915 (60 yrs.);
(2) James, d.Aug.17,1907 (78yrs);
(3) Patrick, d.9 April,1945 65 Yrs., wife, Bridget d. 19, May, 1968, (80) yrs. erected by sons, Patrick & John of Kiliogenehan
(4) Thomas Claffey of Endrim. b. 1/18/85, d. May,1906; (65 yrs), Wife: Elizabeth. d.11/7/1906, (82yrs.), Sons: James, d.12/15/1931 (72yrs),
(5)Frank, d.1/25/1940 (77yrs); wife, Margaret, d.1/20/46, (76yrs):
(6). Frank Claffey (?) d. 10/14/1933 (57yrs), Peter Claffey d.6/19/05 by brother Frank
I hope this information is helpful to some of our web friends. My question is: How did these
Claffeys get buried in what seems to have become a national shrine and as recently as 1945?
