Irish Vital Records on file in Dublin:
Registration of non-Catholic marriages began in 1845.
Registration of all birth, marriage, and deaths for everyone (including Catholics) began January 1, 1864.
Records for earlier dates can often be found in the Roman Catholic Church registers for the church your ancestors attended. Films of many of these registers can be rented from your nearest Family History Library located throughout the United States at the local Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. The rent is about $3.50 for two weeks and the film must be viewed at their local church library.
Hi All
I am not sure if I posted this before so apologies if I did.
The date on a birth record in Ireland in the 1800's will more than
likely not be the date of birth so therefore you will find that a
baptism will have an earlier date. The reason for this is because
parents only had a certain length of time to register a birth and if
they did not do this then they were fined. So that when they did
eventually register the birth they gave an incorrect date.
The baptism usually took place within 24 to 48 hours after the birth.
Another reason why they were not really bother about the date on the
birth record was because they never needed this record. They needed the
baptismal record for getting into school and getting married.
I hope this information helps some of you.
There is also another thing for you to remember, it is reckoned that
somewhere between 15 to 20% of all births were never registered.
Regards
Sandra
