Mrs. Claffey, 100, Dies
Here Yesterday Morning
Funeral Will Be First In New St. Mary's Church
Mrs. Mary Claffey, Le Center's oldest citizen, passed away peacefully at
her home here early yesterday morning, July 8. She had been privileged to
celebrate her 100th birthday on June 6.
The only Centennarian in this community, Mrs. Claffey enjoyed the
opportunity of visiting with about 200 people who called to honor her on
her anniversary, remembering names and faces remarkably well.
Soon after she passed the eventful century mark, the family noticed a
slight change in her vitality. About two weeks ago she had a minor fall and
since that time she grew gradually weaker until she was called to her
eternal reward at 1:00 am. Wednesday.
Mrs. Claffey had received the last rites of the Catholic church a week
prior to her death and had a visit with Father Buckley Tuesday evening.
Her mind stayed clear until the very end and she had made notes of various
details she wanted taken care of. The day before her death she remembered
that it was her son Edmund's wedding anniversary, so she asked to have a
card sent to his wife in Waukesha, Wisconsin, who was unable to accompany
him here.
The family, who had been so faithful in caring for her and visiting her,
were all with her at the time of her death.
There are four daughters: Mrs. W. L. Keogh (Lillian), with whom the mother
has been making her home, Miss Mae Claffey and Mrs. Irene Keogh of
Faribault and Mrs. Ed (Gert) Repp of St. Paul; and four sons, Herbert,
George and Edmund of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Francis of Kilkenny.
Mary Dooley was born in Monches, Waukesha County, Wisconsin, on June 6,
1859. She was the only daughter of Michael and Margaret Dooley. Her
parents, a brother, a half-brother and a step-brother all preceded her in
death.
Mary Dooley grew to woman hood in the Monches community She was baptized,
received First Holy Communion and Confirmation at St. John's church.
Her marriage to Charles (Sylvester) Claffey took place in 1881 and in 1885
they came to
Minnesota. They settled on a farm near Kilkenny where they endured the many
hardships of pioneer farming and worked hard to support their large family.
After the father's death in 1905, Mrs. Claffey stayed on the farm until all
of the nine children were grown up. After that she moved to Le Center where
she has lived the past 24 years.
The estimable grandmother has eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren
and four great, great, grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Patrick Kiernan
died, in 1930.
A devout Catholic all of her life, Grandma Claffey will have the honor of
having the first Requiem Mass at St. Mary's new church. The services will
be held on Saturday, July 11, 9:00 a.m. Father John Brown will entone the
Mass and Father Denis Buckley as well as several visiting priests are
expected in the sanctuary.
Burial will be at the Calvary Cemetery, Montgomery, where Mr. Claffey was
laid to rest. Her own choice, pallbearers will be grandsons of the
deceased: Eugene, Clayton and Jerome Claffey of Kilkenny, Donald Keogh of
Minneapolis and Kenneth Keogh of St. Peter, and a close friend, Leo Greer,
of Kilkenny.
Visitation will be held at the Hayden Funeral Home starting this (Thursday)
afternoon at 2:00 o'clock and continuing through Friday evening.
