Off hand, the only reference I know of is for a Father Claffey in Weeks, Saskatchewan in 1950. Since his body was returned to Ireland, it would seem he was from there. The Claffey Home Page usually deals with Claffey ancestors who did not die recently, since parents' names and date and place of birth are now available on death certificates (at least in the USA this info is included on death certs since about 1880). I will check the Catholic archives in Regina, Saskatchewan to see if they have any info and will post your query to the Claffey Mailing List. After your interview with the priests who knew him, you will no doubt have a few more clues about where he came from and at that point I can help you trace his family. A number of Irish Claffey men became priests.
Jillian <jillianmd(a)shaw.ca> wrote:i am trying to trace some family background about father john claffey who emigrated to canada after world war ii. he worked with father o'fhaherty, known as the scarlet pmpernel of the vatican, in rescuing allied prisoners of war, fleeing jews, soldiers defecting from the fascist army, others fleeing from forced labour or conscription. There is a book scarlet pimpernel of the vatican, in which claffey is briefly mentiond two or three times as being in o'flaherty's network of priests and other people that helped find safe houses for these refugees, and also supply them with false id., food, disguises and other supplies. a motion picture, the scarlet and the black, starring gregory peck is based on that book. i will shortly be interviewing a couple of priests here who knew claffey well during his many years in canada but i need to know more about his family. his body was sent back to ireland when he died a few years ago.
( i am typing with a baby in one arm, hence no capitals, on a strange computer.) i looked at the claffey home page but the links weren't working. if you or anyone else named claffey has any suggestions as to where i can search, I'd appreciate it if you could reply to my address in the cc line. this is a man you might want to be related to. feel free to forward or post.
hope you can help me!
