Fellow Listers,
Sorry for delay in completing World War One Veterans List on "Washington PA
Nostalgia" web site.
http://freepages.school-alumni.rootsweb.com/~ebgschol/
About half way down front page is a link to Veterans Corner Index at URL
http://freepages.school-alumni.rootsweb.com/~ebgschol/vetcordx.html
Although we will be adding much more info to the site in coming months, the
list from the book "Washington's Part in The World War" has now been
completed with names of over 1300 veterans form Washington County.
Perhaps you will find a familiar name there. If so please let me know.
Regards. Carol Mounts in Washington Pa

Comments: Just wondering if anyone has ever heard how the Claffey name came
about? The Gaelic for Claffey is 'Mac Laitheamh'. However there is a commen
Irish name called Carroll, which in Gaelic is also 'Mac Laitheamh'. Hundreds
of years ago when Cromwell's army invaded Ireland the 'Mac Laitheamh' clan
fought against it as one. But a number of years later the clan became
divided and split into 2 seperate groups. When Irish names became Anglacised
in the 18th Centuary the smaller of the 2 groups eventually became known as
Claffey and the larger group as Carroll. To this day the Gaelic for both
Claffey and Carroll is 'Mac Laitheamh'.
