Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi folks, for the last few days, my inbox has filled with bounce
messages from various ISP's, the reason, and the reason many of you are
not receiving mail from the list, or have "bounced" off the list may be
as follows..:
Osirisoft.com was part of the SPEWS blacklist service, which got some
bad e-press lately because of the way they conducted their service.
If one person at an ISP was associated with spamming, they would
blacklist the entire ISP and the only way for the users of the ISP
(Internet Service Provider)
to get un-blacklisted would be for them to switch ISPs or convince
their ISP to do whatever SPEWS told them to do. There was no
appeals process.
Some people got mad at Osirisoft and they have recently been the subject
of a
DDOS attack. It has been said that the owner of Osirisoft has
PERMANENTLY
shut down the service and blacklisted the entire Internet. I do not know
if this is true.
The way the service works, every piece
of email sent through the service is checked to see if its origin
is on the blacklist. If the entire Internet is blacklisted,
then every piece of email sent through the service is rejected as spam.
Any ISP filtering email through relays.osirisoft.com must reconfigure
to filter through another server or turn off filtering to fix this
situation. However, it's hard to contact them to tell them this, since
any email sent will be filtered as spam! Hopefully they pay attention
and fix it on their own.
