Hello Vanette,
This message is from Norma Clack (formerly Zivich, hence the e-mail name). Robert and Edith Clack were my grandparents.
You mentioned that you were interested in trying to perhaps establish a relationship between the Butlers/Gordons and your family. I have a lot of the family research in my files, so I'll try to share some information that might be helpful.
Here's the lineage:
Georgia Edith Gordon (she went by her middle name)
b.1988 d.1972. She and my grandfather, Robert W. Clack, were married in China in 1911. She was in China because her mother, Elma Butler, was a missionary.
Margaret Elma Butler (she went by her middle name, too)
b. 1859 in Iowa
d. 1938 in California
Married William Thomas Gordon in 1881. (They "divorced" in 1891 and he married again to Delaney Lou Lovell; Elma did not marry again.)
Elma Butler's parents were:
David Williams Butler (1831-1915)
Asenath Draper (1836-1924)
Married in 1852
William Gordon'a parents were:
Thomas Jefferson Gordon (1834-1908)
Eliza Winn (1835-1916)
Married in 1857 in Iowa.
In your message you mentioned that Elma Butler Gordon had written a letter in 1929 to James and Elizabeth Creswell Carpenter in Mississippi, but that they had lived in Missouri previously. She must have known them in Missouri because William Gordon's parents (Thomas and Eliza Winn Gordon) lived in Braymer, Missouri, and "Will" & Elma stayed with them for a time.
Or another Missouri connection is that on of Elma Butler's brothers, Asa W. Butler (1866-1945), lived in Albany, MO, and owned the "Albany Capital" newspaper. Asa did not marry.
The surnames Carpenter and Standley don't appear in my of my papers. I don't know if any of this will help your search.
Please feel free to contact me.
Norma
