Hello Fellow Listers
I have recently started researching my family history. It appears that my grandfather Bertram (Bertie) James Clack left Devizes about 1910 for Corwen, North Wales. He was Head Gardener at the Rûg Estate, Corwen before joining the Machine Gun Corps during the First World War. He was killed in action in France on Saturday, 21st September 1918.
This is what I know so far:
Bertram (Bertie) James CLACK born 6 Jan 1889 Devizes
Father George CLACK living St John's Lane, Devizes at time of registration of above.
Mother Elizabeth CLACK (formerly Harris) address as above born Urchfont.
1881 Census for 2 Meads Court, Devizes St Mary shows
George CLACK Head Occupation Maltster's labourer born Stert Wiltshire aged 25
Elizabeth CLACK Wife born Urchfont aged 22
Emily Kate CLACK daughter born Devizes 4 years old
Henry E CLACK son born Devizes 2 years old
Frederick CLACK son born Devizes 3 months old
1901 Census online for Devizes St. John, Wilts. 1301/1023110 shows the following family of CLARKs
who look very much like our CLACKs:- (Courtesy of Brian Beeche Comley - Porthcawl, Glamorgan (South Wales)
Name; Age; Where Born; Occupation
Clark George 46 Wilts Slort Wilts General Labourer
Clark Elizabeth 44 Wilts Erchfont Wilts
Clark Bert 12 Wilts Devizes Wilts
Clark Arthur 9 Wilts Devizes Wilts
Clark Alice 7 Wilts Devizes Wilts
Clark Ernest 5 Wilts Devizes Wilts
Clark Dorothy 2 Wilts Devizes Wilts
I believe that Alice CLACK lived at Chippenham at one time during the 1920's OR 1930's.
I believe Frederick CLACK perished aboard H M Submarine E18 on 11 June 1916.
I note that the CLACK surname is still in use in Devizes so can SKS add to the information collected to date and also suggest sources of research material other than the Census and BMD Index. Information on the Clacks in Wiltshire is not readily available in Mid Wales.
Thanks in anticipation.
Dawn Roberts formerly CLACK
