Richard,
I'd be most interested in hearing about your link to Wm. Clack of Marden,
Wilts, England. If it's though Rev. James Clack of Ware Parish, VA, USA,
could you tell me the child's name?
Edna Clack
I think I sent you an answer to the AFFIRMATIVE a few days ago.
Yes I am a descendent of the Rev. James Clack. I have tons of genealogy
on the Clack and Bolling side.
Sincerely,
Richard

Compared to SMITHs, yes, but there are enough CLACKs around to give you
several headaches if you have no specifics for the search. Fortunately, you
have a clue in your information. I looked through my 1881 British Census CD
index and found your MARVEN family:
Dwelling: 18 Russell Road
Census place: Croyden, Surrey, England
Source: FHL Film 1341193, PRO Ref RG11, Piece 0816, Folio 38, Page 4
John MARVEN M(arried) 42 M(ale) Birthplace Ipswich, Suffolk, England
.............rel: Head, Occ: labourer
Mary A MARVEN, M, 44, F(emale) Cratfield, Suffolk, England
............ Wife
[if this is your Mary Ann nee CLACK, search Suffolk, not Oxon]
Mary A MARVEN, U(nmarried), 9, F, Croydon, Surrey, England
............Daur, scholar
William MARVEN, U, 7, M, Croydon, Surrey, England
............Son, scholar
George MARVEN, U, 20, Cratfield, Suffolk, England
............Nephew, labourer
Julia MARVEN, U, 15, F, Cratfield, Suffolk, England
............Niece.
There were Mary Ann CLACKs born in the Bampton area, but obviously not
yours.
Cheers,
Ray

Whilst at Bampton I took the following from the 1871 census which you
may find interesting:
Wold? Street
Robert Clack 71 Ag Labourer
Mary 56
Mary Ann 17
Amelia 14
Fanny (Granddaughter) 11
Henry (Grandson) 7 Bird boy
Fred (Grandson?) 3 Bird boy
Emily (Granddaughter?) 2
Note: I didn't write down Fred and Emily's relationship to Robert.
Regarding my grandfather Fred William Clack, I should have mentioned
in my last message that he was one of three brothers who went to
London to find work. I don't know when and I don't know his brothers
names.
Geoff Clack, Norfolk, England.
Yep, I think so. I'm a descented of the Rev. James Clack.

Hi, Gang -
I'm happy to see that listers were just temporarily dormant. Thanks for
coming alive.
Geoffrey Clack wrote:

Now there's a creative spin on two basic sentences. No, Geoff, I don't
dabble in the occult - but SOMEONE is certainly psychic:
Bampton and environs is my CLACK country, too; just minutes prior to reading
your message, I was working with my OFHS microfiche transcription of the
Bampton parish registers on a family related to the CLACKs.
You wrote that your 1871 census search of Bampton found:
>David Clack 54 Ag Labourer
>Eliza 33 Dressmaker
>Fanny 6 Scholar
>Fred W 4 Scholar
The transcription of baptisms ends in 1845, negating any information on
Freddie and his sister, but I'll bet this baptism entry refers to their
daddy -
1818 Feb 01 CLACK, David s of Edward & Frances
and this burial entry -
1883 Apr 27 CLACK, David (68)
and this marriage -
1865 Nov 23
CLACK David (x) wid clock & watchmaker, s of Edward, lab
CRIPPS Eliza wid d of Edward BOWLES, lab
wits: Alfred BOWLES, Martha NORTH
More about David CLACK:
a marriage -
1843 Jan 17
CLACK David s of Edward
DEWE Jane d of Joseph
baptisms -
1843 May 14 CLACK David s of David & Jane
1845 Mar 30 CLACK Emily d of David & Jane
burial -
1847 Aug 22 CLACK Jane
My search of the area for information on David's parents produced mysteries
that I'll let you deal with. From the information to hand, it would appear
that David was an only child. I found the following:
Marriage at Langford -
1798 Oct 10 CLACK Edward (of Broadwell) & Frances TURNER
Burial at Bampton -
1832 Dec 16 CLACK Fanny (50)
Marriage at Bampton -
1836 Sep 20 CLACK Edward & Jane YOUNG, botp
Burial at Bampton -
1858 Oct 12 CLACK Edward (77)
I have some doubts about the fit, but if your Edward turns out to be the
Edward CLACK bap at Clanfield in 1783, s of William & Mary, then you and I
have CLACKs in common.
Cheers,
Ray

Hello Raymond,
There may be a joke in your message about you being a medium - but
I'll ignore it (I don't meddle with that sort of stuff).
My grandfather Fred William Clack was born, according to notes my
mother left, at Bampton, Oxfordshire in 1869, but I know little about
him ((if his being a stoker during the First world War and being
torpedoed twice, at the Battle of the Dogger Bank (North Sea) and
again off the River Plate (South America) and dying from TB (probably
contracted in ship engine rooms)) in his early 40s, is little).
We live in East Anglia now but I was near Bampton on business a few
weeks ago and managed to get there.
The Bampton librarian set me up with microfiches of the June 1841 and
1871 census'. I didn't have much time but found records regarding a
lot of Clacks - and took some notes (if anybody is interested please
contact me) including, in 1871;
David Clack 54 Ag Labourer
Eliza 33 Dressmaker
Fanny 6 Scholar
Fred W 4 Scholar
I realize that the dates don't match up but I'm trying to find out if
Fred W could be my grandfather - the date I have for his birth could
be wrong.
Will tell the list if I discover more.

This Clack visited Bradenstoke-cumClack-Wiltshire to investigate Clack
Abbey. At least the crypt and tower were remaining at that time. A citizen
informed that William Randolph Hearst had purchased it in 1925, had
dismantled and shipped to a college in wales.
It is well documented that Reverend James Clack left England in the 1600's
and settled in Glouchester Virginia where he pastored a church for
approximately forty years. Supposedly two other Clack brothers emigrated in
the same period but we dont know who they were.
Many Clack families in The US can trace back to the Reverend James, but my
line cant get past Martin Clack, born 1775.
Val Young in Swindon, would you have any info on the other Clacks who left
around 1635?

I am searching for information on James or John W. Clack-GA, Franklin, Walton,or Barrow Co. GA, whose daughter, Manerva married my Great Grandfather, James or Ben Adams, CS, 1830-1870-80. His father would have possibly been John Clack. Thank you, Georgia Smith
