Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
The new mail program at Rootsweb will not allow posters to use the
BCC: header in emails.
If you post to a Mailing List, and include ANY addresses in the BCC:
header, the post will be "bounced". If you post or reply to the List and
want to also send a copy to an individual privately, use the CC: header.
Don't ask me why the new software is configured this way, but it is.

George

Folks, Rootsweb is once again making changes. This time they're changing
over to a new mail server program and some problems have been observed
but they have either been fixed or are in the process of being fixed.
This time, one of the problems has to do with the List addresses. As some
of you may have noticed, there is no longer a "-L" or "-D" in the
address. It's just plain GERMANNA_COLONIES(a)rootsweb.com, although
the old GERMANNA_COLONIES-L(a)rootsweb.com is supposed to
continue working for some time. To be on the safe side, just use the
address
without the "-L", that is, GERMANNA_COLONIES(a)rootsweb.com.
I guess I should pass along some stuff that has come up during the
changeover.
1) You can NOT subscribe to both the Normal and Digest Modes with the
SAME email address! If you only subscribed to one Mode in the past, you
should still be subscribed to that Mode. If you were subscribed to both,
with ONE email address, you have probably found out by now that you
are receiving email to that address in only one Mode. If you wish to
subscribe to the other mode now, you must use a different address. For
those who have only one address, a good solution is to get a free Hotmail
account (or a free account from some other service) and subscribe
with that
address. Sorry, but that's the way the new Mailman works.
2) To subscribe to a Rootsweb List that has been "migrated" to the new
Mailman service, here's how:
To subscribe to the Normal Mode (old -L Mode), send to:
GERMANNA_COLONIES-request(a)rootsweb.com
Put SUBSCRIBE in BOTH the subject line AND body
To subscribe to the Digest Mode (old -D Mode), send to:
GERMANNA_COLONIES-L-request(a)rootsweb.com
Put SUBSCRIBE in BOTH the subject line AND body
To unsubscribe do the same as above, except use UNSUBSCRIBE.
For other Lists, just replace GERMANNA_COLONIES with the
actual name of the List.
3) If you were using the Digest Mode before and were receiving the
Digests in MIME instead of Plain Text, you have probably found that
you're now receiving them in Plain Text. To revert to the MIME
Mode, email the List Administrator and request to be changed to
MIME.
You can contact any List Administrator by emailing to:
ListName-Admin(a)rootsweb.com
Where ListName is the actual name of the List.
4) If anyone has questions about this changeover, don't hesitate to
post a query. You can do so here, since there may be others who
need to know the same thing.

George
