David, yes I am trying to figure out some of the mysteries that are within my families lineage and that would be great if you could ask the cousins in Ponoka about Clarence.
As for my grandfather, Ernest, you are correct about his nickname "Dutch or Dutchy". Not sure why he had that nickname. Also you are correct about his siblings.
Harry lived close and we would go visit or he would come to my grandmothers house (after Erntest passed) when Sharon (Harry's daughter) would come up from California with her kids to visit. thank you again for all you help :o)

Lucia,
Yes you are correct.
I don't know why Clarence was adopted, but was told that he did assume the Beacock name and that he moved to British Columbia. I don't think he ever married and he probably died in BC.
If you want, we could check with our cousins up in Ponoka to see if they have more information on Clarence.
Ernest (who I think was called Dutch) had the following brothers & sisters: William (Bill), Grace (who may have died young), Claud, Alice, Albert (Jim), Harry, Vera (Pat) and Clarence
Cheers.
Dave

David, there is a story in my family that my grandpa Ernest had a younger brother named Clarence that was adopted by the Beacock family. I know that he may have lived in or around Medicine Hat, Cananda. Have you come accross anything that would bring light to the story? i am at a loss.
thanks again

Message Board Post:
Since Eric and Peter seem to be descended from the earliest John Cissell to arrive in St. Mary's County, Maryland, I thought it might be appropriate to provide some information about him. It is a little easier in reverse chronological order and so this bit deals with where he is buried:
John Cissell's will was dated the 28th of April 1694, about 4 years before his death. In it he bequeaths: ". and my body to the earth from whence it came, to be buryed at Nutowne Church, in such devout manner as my exec'rs hereafter named shall be thought meet & convenient...."
On 10 November 1661, William Bretton, and his wife, Temperance, had given land to the ".good and Zealous Roman Catholick Inhabitants of New Towne and St. Clements Bay.." for a Catholic Church or Chappel, "convenient likewise for a Church yard where in to bury their dead. Conteyning ab't one acre and halfe of Ground situate and lying on a devident of land called Brettons Out Lett, and on the Easte side of the said devident neere to the head of a creeke called St Williams Creeke which falleth into St Nicholas creeke and neare unto the narrowest place of the freehold of Little Brittaine." [Note: Spelling was a little flexible in those days!]
The New Town Cemetery has been used continuously since that time, and so is probably the oldest operating English Catholic cemetery in the U.S. The chapel allowed for by William Bretton no longer stands. The cemetery is now known as the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery because of the church that was build in the 1700's about a half-mile south of the cemetery. The cemetery is located almost 4 miles southwest of Leonardtown, MD and can be seen at: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=38.263322,-76.697499&spn=0.004288,0.01...
One problem with the cemetery is that essentially none of the grave markers have survived from the 1600's and 1700's and so we don't know exactly where on this acre and a half site he is buried. I cringed every time I visit this place because new graves continue to be dug, even though they don't know where these earlier graves are!

What is the evidence that John Cissell of St. Mary's, MD, was from Herefordshire? I
have seen claims that he was the son of Thomas Cecil and Susan Oxenbridge but they
seem to be without proof. I found on the web the following comments by Dave
Cissell:
My main research efforts have been with the John
Cecill/Cissell (c1639-1698) who came to Maryland
about 1658 [see the Maryland Land Records Liber
4, folio 29] and some of his descendent
lines. Over the last 35 years or so, I have
spent time at the Maryland Hall of Records in
Annapolis and also at various libraries and
record centers in the UK looking for records
about him. To date, I am aware of no records to
tie the Cecils/Cissells of St. Marys County
Maryland with the well known Cecil family in
England. Even more frustrating is that we do not
have any records identifying where in England this family really did came from!
Dave Cissell also reminds us that the Cissell of MD who d. 1698 never went by the
name of John Baptist Cissell and that we do not have any evidence other than
circumstantial as to the surname of his wife Mary, either as Calvert or Shercliife.
Does anyone have hard evidence about this John Cissell's parents and wife? I
believe DNA has been explored, but I have not heard about the results.

Great, thanks for the information about Bernard Joseph Cissell.
Elise Jourdan, in her "Early Families of Southern Maryland, Volume 1" provides the following pedigree information:

James Cissell (b. by 1717 St. Mary's County, MD. d. 1785) married Elizabeth ______.
James Cissell (b. by 1698. d. Mar/Apr 1717 St. Mary's County, MD)
John Cecill (arrived in MD in 1658 and died in St. Mary's County, MD 1698). Believed to have married Mary Shirtcliffe.

Kimberly,
On you list of Cissells:
Peter Cissell b:1969
Bernard Louis Cissell b:1933
Bernard Joseph Cissell b: 1895 d: 1973
Henry Sebastian Cissell b: 1850 d: 1917
John Jefferson Cissell b:1807 d: 1875
James Cissell b: 1768 d:1823
Can I assume that Peter's grandfather, Bernard Joseph, is the same person as Eric's great grand father? If so this looks interesting!
How did you connect Bernard Joseph Cissell with Henry Sebastian Cissell?
Thanks.
Dave

Thanks David,
I did not have the Eliz.( Jeffers) name. I have not done a lot of research in Kentucky for Rosa, because at that time I was so intent on the Middleton's, but would love to find out her parents.
Again thanks, Shirley

Shirley,
Sorry I was not able to get any information about Rosa's family.
The only thing I have gotten so far was the marriage record in Hardin County for Rose Jane Cissell. It is dated 3 Dec 1841. Her parents are not listed; instead there is the entry, "Eliz (Jeffers?) made oath that R. J. Cissell was 21 years of age"
If I do find anything, I will post it here.
