Hi,
I am so excited. My grandfather was Samuel V. Cissell and his father was Ezeikl Cissell and I think his father was Bernard.
My grandmother was James Knox's daughter and married my grandfather at St. Mary's Sem. in 1904. I visited the church and it is beautiful.
I am looking for any pictures of the Cissell family as I have only one of my grandmother and one of my grandfather when they were older.
My daddy's name was Harry W. Cissell. I believe that if you wanted to be a Catholic you had to change your name to Cissell from Cecil. The Cecil's were very much from the Church of England. Our great great, etc. is buried in Westmister Abbey along with the kings and queens. He was Queen Eliz. Prime Minister/Treas.
Very interested in hearing from you.

Eric, Don't let anything discourage you from looking for your ancestors. I got this passion from my maternal grandmother who was a daughter of the pioneers to the Washington Territories and I am continuing where she left off. I knew very little on my fathers side until I stated this thread and now with the help of David and others in on this wonderful website I have found out a lot about where i came from. Happy searching :o)Lucia

The only part of this that I do know for sure is Bernard's children. But I do not recognize Lynn or Beatrice. But my grandpa Joe Cissell does live in Crossfield and I recognize all of the other bothers and Helen. Thank you for this information, I was skeptical of this website, because I thought anyone could just say anything and someone would have to choose to believe it or not. But this is obviously real information, which is nice to see.

Eric,
You did not seem to be closely related to my branch of the family who lived near Ponoka and so it seemed unlikely, I could be of much help.
However, one of my Ponoka cousins was able to provide the following quote from Benard Cissell that she found in a Ponoka History Book that had been published in 1973:
" I, Bernard , was born in Kentucky and my wife, Alice Fleming, in Nebraska. In 1903, Alice came to Ponoka with her family. In 1917, Alice and I married and we bought the S.E. 1/4 -17-42-26 known as the Palmer Farm in 1919 and lived there until 1925 when I sold it. In 1927, I got the place back and rented the land to F. Fleming for a few years then sold it. .... We had eight children, Don at Grand Prairie, Helen Larsen at Fort Sask., Gordon, Paul, Lynn and Beatrice Sender all in Edmonton and Joe and Bernard in Crossfield."
If this Bernard was your Great Grand father, then you should be able to trace your family back a lot further.
If Bernard was married in 1917, then he most likely was born (in Kentucky) before 1900 and so should have been listed on the 1900 US Census. In fact, there is a Bernard Cissell listed for New Hope, Nelson County, Kentucky for that year. He is listed with the family headed by Henry Cissell (age 43) and Ruth D. Cissell (possibly Dorothy Ruth Hagan). Bernard is listed as 4 years of age with a birth date of 1895. Bernard is also listed with this same family in the 1910 Census for Nelson County, Kentucky where his age is given as 14, and his father's as 58. His brothers and sisters included Mary, John, Nellie and Hagan.
In the 1870 US Census for Marion County, Kentucky, there is a Henry Cissill (age 16) listed under a family headed by Jefferson Cissill (age 68) (possibly John Jefferson Cissell) and Littlia Cissill (age 45) (possibly Latitica A. Clayton). However, there is also a Henry Cecil (age 12) listed in the 1870 Census for Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Kentucky. It would take a little work to see which of these individuals is your ancestor, but it would probably not be too difficult to do so. I sort of suspect that Bernard is probably related to the Jefferson Cissell line (but I have certainly been wrong before!).
Some of the pedigrees available on the Web seem to suggest that the Jefferson Cissell line probably traces back to the James Cissell who was born about 1685 in St. Mary's County Maryland and died there about 1717. This James Cissell is actually my ancestor, as well. While I would never suggest using these web-based pedigrees to prove your family connections, they can provide possible suggestions on where to look for actual records and connections.
If you would like to try to verify any of the above as part of your actual family tree, please let me know, and I'll try to help as best I can.
Also, if you should be able to verify your connection back to James Cissell (1685-1717), then your oldest known ancestor will be the John Cecill (Cissell) who came to St. Mary's County, Maryland in 1658 and who died there in 1698.
Cheers.
Dave Cissell
